THE YEARLING Our story begins ,n the last Monday in August, 19 +8, when twenty of us enrolled as Freshmen in Coyle High School. It was a memorable occasion. We thought we were doing something great until some Seniors strolled into the room where Mr. Muncie, our sponsor was urolling us. These Seniors let us know that we were mere Yearlings and as such must conform to certain rules of conduct and informed us that we would be initiated in a few days. They urged us to be very studious and to act intelligent whether we were or not. We were somewhat awed by their admonitions and began to wonder whether this was really to be the great life we had looked forward .to for so long. These w.re the yearlings» who started as charter members of the class of 52. Juno Alder son, Caries Arnett, George Cowger, Cecil Erwin, Johnny Flaseh, Edward Ford, Margaret Hunt, Neila Mast, Charles McCaney, J.D, Longan, Betty °ark. Bob Sexton, O.K. Shell- Loretta Silvws, Herty Smith. Opal Stafford Colleen Stew- art, Harry Mikesell,Dee Higgins, Hazel Cantrell, and Beulah Majors. To these were added Glenrida Edwards. Mr. Muncie made a very capable sponsor. The subjects we took were: English, Science, Algebra, Home Ec., for the girls, -nd Agriculture for the boys. Our teachers were: Mrs. Brown,Mrs. Hitt,Miss Nay,and Mr. Muncie. Our activities were baseball and basketball for the boys, and softball and basketball for the girls. One of our girls, Opal Stafford and one of our boys, Harry Mikesell, made the respective basketball squads although none of them lettered. Honors that came our way were not many but they were good ones. Margaret Hunt was elected Annual Queen and four of our class, June Alderson. Neila Mast,Loretta Silvers, and Betty Park made the State Honor Roll. Our social affairs consisted of two class parties plus a very special party given us by the Seniors after a very rough day of Initiation. We were not pretty specimens after that marching and we were forced to go in the clothes we were wearing, but we were allowed to dress for the party. The last dav of M»y fl+9 found us much more mature and in our own weigh? equal to the unper classmen. We were thrilled when we re- ceived our grade slips proving beyond a doubt that we were no longer YEARLINGS .
