BATTLER ’71 Cowpens High School COWPENS, SOUTH CAROLINA VOL. XXV Table of Contents J.V. Sports 90-103 Classes 104-169 Administration and Faculty 170-183 Advertisements 184-219 4 Dedication The staff of 1971 proudly and affectionately dedi- cates our yearbook, the BATTLER, to you, Mr. Philip Bailey. You have been directing our chorus for the last six years, giving us many hours of your time. You have inspired the students of Cowpens High School by your fine musical ability and wonderful per- sonality. You have overlooked our carelessness and forgetfulness and have cheered us in moments of de- spair. By encouraging the students to develop their talents, you have made their lives more enjoyable. Surely the Cowpens High School Chorus could not have been successful without your faithful instructions. Your music will always ring a note of cheer through- out the halls of Cowpens High School. MR. PHILIP BAILEY 5 O' 8:15 to 2:55 sounds ... whispers of conversation hidden by a teacher’s mono- tone ... a locker door’s loud bang as a forgotten English Lit book is retrieved ... the pandemonium in the hall during the mad four-minute rush to class ... 8 9 sounds that give life to the day's routine ... the cheerleaders bringing order to the confusion of a pep rally ... the challenge of an outsider urging preparation for tomorrow ... the noisy jumble of voices, chain, and sewing machine ... 10 12 sounds of a day - any day at Cowpens High School - each tone may be re- peated but each vibration is unique and individual ... daily hubbubs producing a year of activities ... sad, happy,.serious, or silly ,,. all showing that Cow- pens High School is alive ,.. sounds of accomplishment and loss, but never defeat ... through a loss there is a gain to make the next challenge easier ... 14 sometimes not listening but always hearing ... maybe clutching just a little part that means something, but it's that little part that counts ... of times shutting out the world and hearing just secret sounds ... sometimes good, sometimes bad ... but always there ... 15 FINALISTS BELOW: Johnnie Sue Fortune.
