In addition to the daily responsibilities of running the college with its nearly 50 instructors, the President also made the time to support the students by attending nearly all of their extra-curricular activities. I think we went to all but one of the football games and all but two of the men's home basketball games, said Lu Nelson, wife of the president. Of course we attended all the concerts, plays and initiation ceremonies held at night. About the only activities the President missed were those scheduled for the afternoons or when he was out of town. Attending those events didn't always mean Dr. Nelson could relax and enjoy the activity. The Kansas Home Economics Student Section CKHESSJ Spring Bridal Show found Dr. Nelson in the midst of the activity modeling tuxedos for the well- dressed father of the bride. Although modeling and attending sports events were not part of Dr. Nelson's job description, the President did view them as vital functions of his job. lt's important to him that the students see him as approachable, said Mrs. Nelson. He's interested in each of them, and he knows most of the students by their first name. Attending as many activities as he can shows the students he is human and that he, and the college, support them and their contributions to the school. Q -Q -1 ...
