In addition to the daily responsibilities of running the college with its nearly 50 instructors, the President also made the time to support the students by attending nearly all of their extra-curricular activities. I think we went to all but one of the football games and all but two of the men's home basketball games, said Lu Nelson, wife of the president. Of course we attended all the concerts, plays and initiation ceremonies held at night. About the only activities the President missed were those scheduled for the afternoons or when he was out of town. Attending those events didn't always mean Dr. Nelson could relax and enjoy the activity. The Kansas Home Economics Student Section CKHESSJ Spring Bridal Show found Dr. Nelson in the midst of the activity modeling tuxedos for the well- dressed father of the bride. Although modeling and attending sports events were not part of Dr. Nelson's job description, the President did view them as vital functions of his job. lt's important to him that the students see him as approachable, said Mrs. Nelson. He's interested in each of them, and he knows most of the students by their first name. Attending as many activities as he can shows the students he is human and that he, and the college, support them and their contributions to the school. Q -Q -1 ... For the beginning of the spring semester, the Medical Laboratory Tech- nician CMLTJ program was in operation under the instruction of Ken Stobbe, a registered medical technologist. Theprogram requires time to be spent in training at affiliated hospitals in the coun- ty as well as on-the-job training in the summer months. After a student com- pletes the course, hefshe will be eligible to take the MLT certification examination. Ken Stobbe left Eau Clair, Wisconsin, to direct the MLT program here. After graduating from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklaho- ma, he attended St. Mary's School of Medical Technology. ln 1974, Stobbe was named Outstanding Medical Technology Student of the year at St. Mary's Hospital in Enid, Oklahoma. The MLT program is a great addition to the Cowley County curriculum. Ken Stobbe -gg' ' PECK DELIGHTS AUDIENCE WITH LIVELY PRESEN- TATION Famed author, Robert Newton Peck, was on the CCCC campus to address students, faculty and townspeople. Most found Peck to be humorous and he won his audience over when he began with, ls this the Methodist Church? Peck's question was triggered by an audience who filled the back half of the Col- lege Auditorium of Galle-Johnson Hall. After every- one moved to the front, Peck began talking about the secrets of writing. According to Peck, one of the most effective ways of creating a picture for the reader is to develop char- acterization. lt takes 20 to 30 years before you're successful, Peck said. Write for 10 or 12 hours a day for 10 to 20 years and then you'll be a writer. Why did he become a writer? I wanted to write because it's pleasurable, he said. lf you're in a job you don't like, it isn't pleasurable and that's what life is all about enjoying what you're doing. But writing isn't all Peck talked about. He gave ad- vice to the students when he said, The teacher's role is that of a disciplinarian. Be grateful for people who give you discipline. l'm going to remember this town, he said as the crowing of a rooster from backstage interrupted his talk repeatedly. The rooster was located backstage because he was a character in the spring play and his interruptions proved Peck could adlib as easily as he could present prepared remarks. Students who heard Peck found he was enjoyable and interesting. l wish I could hear more from him, said one girl as she left the auditorium. 5 iii f fur ins if Linda lreton, reading lab technician, and Elaine Brown, director of the reading lab and English tru ctor. .f ei'f .fri 1 ? sf' f X,- 5 - . -al Renn Memorial Library Staff, Pat Hill, Betty Campbell. an il' 4' 93 will Q' as ,sd am' vii' Q V V ull0 ',, -ww , ' - , 1 nal' ' ' Q if 4005, :Tar nr 'if354'f:c-Q in ul? Boyce, inhis first year as head coach at CCC, brought the Tigers out of the slump whic plagued the team last year. Boyce holds the best record for a first year coach in school history. Several other school records were broken during the '78 season. Quarterback Dan McDaniel completed 119 passes while Matt Biddle was on the receiving end with 55 pass receptions. This season a total of 272 points were put on the Tiger scoreborad, which is another school record. Congratulations to the 1978 Tiger football team and the coaches for a successful season. 1978 - A RECORD SETTING YEAR TEAM OFFENSE Most Points Scored in One Season- 272, 1978 Most Field Goals in One Game- 3, Sept. 30, 1978 tvs. Hutchinsony 3, Nov, 4, 1978 tvs. Prattj Most Yards Passing in one Season- 1,689, 1978 Most Total Offense in One Season- 3,592 11,903 rushing, 1,689 passingb, 1978 Most First Downs in One Season- 193, 1978 Most First Downs in One Game- 36, Oct. 14, 1978 tvs, Butler Countyj Most Passes Attempted in One Season- 265, 1978 Most Passes Attempted in One Game- 41, Sept. 23, 1978 tvs. Garden Cityy Most Passes Completed in One Season- 125, 1978 Most Passes Completed in One Game- 19, Sept. 23, 1978 tvs. Garden Cityy TEAM DEFENSE Most Yards Returned with Pass interceptions in One Season- 655, 1978 INDIVIDUAL OFFENSE Most Field Goals in One Season- 9, Mike Wright, 1978 Most Field Goals in One Game- 3, Mike Wright, Sept. 30, 1978 Cvs. Hutchinsonj 3, Mike Wright, Oct. 28, 1978 Cvs. Prattj Longest Field Goal- 42 yards, Mike Wright, Oct, 28, 1978 tvs. Prattj Most Total Offense in One Game- 328, Dan McDaniel C266 passing, 62 rushingj, Nov. 11, 1978 tvs. Independence? Gary Bowra Aamir Aleem is a quiet man who knows what he wants and he's willing to go to extremes to reach his goals. A Pakistani student who came to Cowley County to play tennis and get an education, Aleem views his sport seriously. Hopefully the strenuous practice he endures and his serious approach to the sport will pay off and one day he may fulfill his dream of playing professional tennis in Pakistan. Aleem looks forward to the time when he will complete his education in the United States and return to help his country as a civil engineer. Tennis is paying for AIeem's education and he realizes its value. My tennis ability is putting me through college, so I work on it a lot, he said. I started playing when I was 14 and I never miss a day. If Aleem is confident about his playing ability, the confidence is not unfounded. He currently is the national men's junior division champion in Pakistan and has played in matches in Pakistan, Belgium, and the United States. The chance that he'Il go home this summer is slight, but he plans to go next year after he finishes school at Cowley County. When his visa expires at the end of four years, Aleem will return to Pakistan to take up his life there. , 0 . ww. . 4 14 Eff! WW 1 .4 X., -HL H.. ,ae ,, WW' -Z I 7.-' '?j.'?.' It hosted the traditional watermelon feed and get-acquainted dance for the student body. The fall term consisted of homecoming activities and a dance, a second place Arkalalah float, and the Arkalalah Queen's Ball. In addition to those activities, the SGA officers attended a KANEDCO Conference in Nebraska, planned a disco Christmas dance, and provided several needy people with food and gifts at Thanksgiving and Christmas. SGA also sponsored the Bloodmobile and a free film, Young Frankenstein, for the students and faculty. Second semester started off with Winter Homecoming activities and a dance. Other SGA events consisted of the election of 1979-80 SGA officers, free movies, Corvette Summer and The Driver, the Bloodmobile, the spring semi- formal dance, Tigeramag two leadership conferences for the new officers, and the end-of- the-year picnic for the whole college. Conrad Jimison and Larry Schwintz, two of the instructors, visit with the student and the employer to check the progress of each of the students on the program. According to Jerry Dienst, an ag student in the program, the agriculture student needs to have both classroom and work experience and working on the Riverside Farms has given him that experience. Jerry's boss, Earl M. Hunt, is the incoming president of the Kansas Wheat Growers Association and is currently vice-president of the same organization. Approximately 80 days per year are spent in meetings so I'm counting on Jerry to do the work and make decisions when l'm gone, he said. The agriculture department has three different programs. There is the agri-business, ag technology, and transfer. Those that go on to four-year schools are the transfer students while the other type is known as the program student, Jimison said. There are four blocks during the two years of the program. Earl Hunt summed up the employer's feelings of the agriculture program at CCCC like this. I'm tickled with the program. Lee The man imprisoned in our play belongs more to the 1970's than to the age in which he lived. For more than a century, Henry David Thoreau was dismissed as a gifted weirdo. Only a rebel like Emerson's handyman would dare to question the benefits of technol- ogy. Why, it is obvious to any educated mind that techno- logical advancement and progress are synonymous. To create a better world, all we have to do is make things bigger, faster, stronger or cheaper. But materialism is not the way. THOREAU KNEW THAT. He smelled the smog before we saw it. lt smarted his soul before it smarted our eyes. He spoke out, but in those television-less days men were slow to listen. He sang out in nonviolent defiance, but how few men since could carry the tune: Gandhi, Count Tolstoi, Martin Luther King. It was the material-mindedness of his government which drove the mystic Thoreau to the shores of Walden. His outrage is closely akin to the anger of many young people today. Young Thoreau was disgusted by the lies and confu- sion which clouded the bloody conflict with a smaller na- tion, Mexico. 15 ,ui sg AX, 4 if.. , S Q V ,Q The President of the United States Uames Polkj had made a pretense of trying to settle differences at the conference table. Then, without a Declaration of War or Congressional approval, U.S. forces plunged into Mexico. An inaccurate and incom- plete report from the President fWhich has been lamely explained by the lack of electrical communicationl brought authorization from Congress. Hawks and white-supremacists of the day cheered. But the intellectual community gasped in horror. The test of the play contains a denunciation of the war actually made by a young Whig Congressman from lllinois - who was not re-elected because of his stand, but who later became the first Republican President of the United States. American secret agents smuggled in a puppet-president from Havana. Over- whelmed by U.S. armor, the Mexicans resisted all the way to the gates of their capital, which fell only when their ammunition ran out. On the side of the invaders, there was hot friction between secret envoys from the White House, an alarmed Congress, and the ambitious military leaders - two of whom became Presidents of the United States and one of the Confederacy. A captain in the army of General Winfield Scott reported that the American troops acted like savages. They shot non-combatants on trivial pretexts. Their conduct toward the poor inhabitants on trivial pretexts. Their conduct toward the poor inhabitants has been horrible and their coming is dreaded like death in every village. Another eyewitness, U.S. Grant, wrote in his Memoirs: I do not think there was ever a more wicked war than that waged by the United States on Mexico. I thought so at the time, when l was a youngster, only I had not the moral courage to resign. Grant had the option of resignation, which has not been granted to youngsters of later wars. According to Santayana, Those who do not remember the past are condemned to relive it. Perhaps this play will jog our memories as we relive the poetic protest of one of America's freest men. Time is awash in this jail cell. We are not trapped in happenings past, but are concerned about THE NOW THOREAU - the explisive spirit who addressed himself to the perils of our time with more power and clarity than most angry young men writing not about NOW. Thoreau is a fascinating paradox: A man who was -- and is. A self-effacing giant. A wit who rarely laughed. A man who loved so deeply and completely that he seemed, sometimes, not to have loved at all. .ju f wa 1-.. 'H-......,, 47 M-iq,.w ,yawn i' 4 H ,U 1.2,-'10, 1 f. '1r rl ff - A l Fostine Moncrief Fostine Moncrief has been teaching at Cow- ley County Community College for 23 years. Music and mythology are two of her favorite subjects. She stated that the Mercury car is named after a mythological god and Ajax was a mythological character before it was a cleanser. But her love of music is even greater than her enjoyment of mythology. She has been a church organistsince high school and has been with Central Christian Church for 14 years. When students return to visit, they usually stop and chat with Mrs. Moncrief. She keeps a busy schedule at the college but also finds time to play the piano or organ at weddings and funerals. When she was hospi- talized a few years ago with a broken bone, the college found it took three people to replace the woman with a powerhouse of energy. ?,,hM f'-uf , I V . ':2f',l:45- .
