;OWAN JR. SR. HIGH SCHOOL MUNCIE, INDIANA 47302 1983 SACHEM VOLUME 25 The 1982-1983 Cowan Sachem Staff brings you A BLAST FROM OUR PAST!! We hope to have cap- tured. through copy and photographs, the lifestyle of the students here at CHS. We hope to have caught you living, laughing and loving your school. This book is a record of everything that happened during the summer of 1982 and the 1982-1983 school year. This record book allows us to see our- selves as we are, caught in the grind, wrapped-up in the fun, and tied-up too much to care. Every minute of every day is an important one to all of us. With the time we send at school, we need to relive those moments as often as possible. Those memo- ries need to be as vivid and as real as possible, and we hope to have captured this as it was. Within these covers are bound the moments, the memo- ries, and the many days of our lives. Each year is a chapter of our lives. Add this book to the collection of your life story. As you enjoy this book, live, laugh, and love, once again, for your school, your friends and most of all, for yourself. The people from Cowan High traveled all over the place. Some went to Kentucky to Lake Cumberland, to water ski and camp, some went west to hike in Colorado, and others went to Florida to bask in the sun. In other ways summer can mean work to people. The Varsity and JV cheerleaders went to IU to Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp. The girls won numerous awards for their school spirit. At Manchester College many girls went to volleyball specialty camps and some attended Tri-State's basketball camp. Many traveled at random to places such as Washington D.C., Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and all the places there between. Above: Mel Marlow and Shelly Carter bask in the sun at Cumberland Lake. It was sponsored by the cheerleaders as they put a lot of hard work and effort into it. The theme this year was Barnyard Bonanza . The gym, halls, and cafeteria were decorated with country scenery, corn stalks, picket fences, and tables with checkered tableclothes. Again this year the entertainment was provided by Larry Black and the Electric Dance Company. People could go into the Sadie's Kountry Kitchen and have a feast with food like pizza, soft drinks, brownies, chips, cupcakes, and cookies. The cheerleaders made a lot of bucks and it turned out to be a real blast and total success. It is also hard work to get out and sell 6000 and some odd dollars worth of magazine subscrip- tions, but the class pulled together and did it. The money goes toward the prom and prom things which we're sure the seniors will enjoy despite their proclaimed dislike of anyone who isn't a senior. Juniors are quite proud of themselves. During homecoming, they placed first in the hall decorations and the float competition, with their hall, Smurf Village, and their float, The Sophomore Smash. Since the Sophomores have the largest class, they were usually one of the loudest at pep-sessions and they raised a lot of school spirit this year. The Sophomores are looking for- ward to their last few years here at CHS. Next year, as ju- niors, they're looking forward to magazine sales and the prom, and finally, as seniors, they're looking forward to graduation. Juda Gammill GIRLS TAKE The Varsity and J.V. started out their seasons hosting a round-rob- in tournament, inviting seven oth- er school. The regular season opener was a big victory over the Southside Rebels. A long time rival of the Cowan volleyball team. The season went well, aside from a few minor injuries oc- curing at crucial times. The girls started practice early in August. They had two sessins a day rang- ing from three to three-and-a- half hours of practice. The girls are very proud of their runner-up volleyball from the 1983 Muncie Sectional, which they took sec- ond to the 1983 State Champs. Their record shows a great deal of improvement over previous years, and anyone of fhem would be glad to tell you that. The cross-country team crossed many roads this year as they ran the many miles required to prepare for the season. It took a lot of hard work, determination, and stamina for them to train for and run the 3.1 mile race. The team was small this year, but was made up of excellent runners. Senior Ron Henderson was Conference Champion and led the team to a 4-3 record. Fel- low seniors, Don Gillentine and Bill Koons, contributed heavily, as well as underclassmen Rick Jack- son and David Wyatt. Although the team experienced several in- juries and illnesses, they always gave it their best shot. Above: Ron Henderson takes the lead from the beginning, with his teommates close behind him. The mighty wrestlers wrapped up their first winning record since 1976. They fin- ished their season at 6-5, win- ning the Tri-High Invitational in the process. The team was dominated by seniors who were great lead- ers. They will be missed next year. Bill Koons and Scott Rawlings were sectional champions, while Kim Morris and Glen Peckinpaugh were sectional runners-up. All four of these seniors qualified for the region- al, where they ran into very tough competition. These four young men led the team with their excellent individual re- cords. FUTURE BRIGHT FOR B-TEAM The boy's B-team record wasn't all that great, but spirit- wise they were outstanding. Es- pecially toward the end of the season. Their record this year was 1-15. The team's main problem was the youth and immaturity of the players, which were mostly freshmen due to the change of the freshmen team to C-team. The defense and offense of the club was mostly balanced due to the good role playing of the team. They got much needed experience this year that will prove helpful in the future. So be watching the next couple of years for these guys. Good luck next year guys. Above: Coach Pentzer gives instructions to his team. They had a record of 5-6, the closest any Cowan basketball team got to .500 this year, Quite an accom- plishment. Playing as a team was something the boys did very well in spite of the continuous shuffling of players to B- and A-team throughout the year. The team's strong point was their tremendous defense which they played excellently through- out the year. Their rebounding, scoring, assists, and the rest of their offense was fairly consistant throughout the season. They should prove to be a pleasure to watch next year. Excellent job on a tremendous season and re- cord, guys. left: Excuse me buddy, you're standing on my foot. Below: During basketball games Rick Jackson becomes all arms. Leaping Towards Victory The girls worked very hard this year to improve themselves, their record, and the school's opinion of them. They achieved some- thing no other girls' basketball team in Cowan history has. They won the first game of the County Tourney; beating the defending County and Sectional champs, Wapahani. Leading the team in defensive and offensive attack were the following people: Leading re- bounder, Colleen McKenzie with 224; leading scorer, Colleen McKenzie averaging 11 pts; lead- ing free throw percentage Sandy Clark with 59%. The girls have greatly improved and should come back strong next year. Above — The infallible style of Cowan shines through. Far upper right — Stacey seems to be thinking, When will this end? Right — Are you blowing that whistle at me, Mr. Referee? asks Colleen. Far lower right — To Sandy Clark it's just another day, another game. 70 — Girls Basketball Small But Mighty The girls had a very productive season this year and gained lots of valuable experience. They were a fairly young team this year consisting mainly of fresh- man. The girls finished their season with a .500 record. The people leading in offensive and defensive attack were as follows: Anne Wilhoite was lead- ing scorer averaging 8.7 points a game, Lesa Dillmon was second with 4.2; leading rebounder was again Anne Wilhoite with 126 averaging 9 a game and second was Stacey Shockley with 59 averaging 5.9 a game. A great season and good luck next year. SLIDING INTO A GREAT SEASON The Varsity Baseball Team suited 15 players this year. Three of the 15 were seniors and one a junior. The rest of the team were freshmen and sophomores. This is going to be a very strong team in a couple of years. At press time the record was not complete and the Hawks were in an excellent position to win the Yorktown Sectional. HAWKS DON'T PUTT AROUND The Cowan Varsity Golf team had a rather rough season, but they are looking forward to the next few years. The team consisted of only two seniors, and both of those sen- iors ran track, so the team was short a few members when the two sports had meets on the same day. The most improved golfer this year was Tom Godby, a junior, so he will be back to help the Hawks next year. Also the Most Valuable Golfer was Sophomore, Mike Tolbert. He will be very valuable and a great asset to the team in the years to come. The yearbook staff wishes to con- gratulate the golf team on their ac- complishments this year. BOYS KEEP ON The Varsity Boys Track Team spent many hours running, jump- ing, and throwing in preparation for the track meets. The team ex- perienced a difficult season. They suffered from several injuries, but were led by several outstanding individuals. New school records were set by Ron Henderson in the 400 and 800, Shawn Rafferty in the 3200, and Scott Ring in the discus. Most of the records were set at the County meet where the team placed fourth. The team placed an excellent 4th out of 10 teams in the Conference. Ron was County and Conference Cham- pion in the 800, and Brian Lee was County and Conference Cham- pion in the pole vault. Seven individuals and the 400 Relay Team qualified for the Sec- tional. Ron placed third in the 800 at the Sectional, and went on to compete in the Regional. The team will lose several out- standing seniors, but many excel- lent underclassmen will return for next year. 74 — Varsity Boys Track Above and Right: Polevaulter Brian Lee goes Up, Up, and Away, or is it down as he clears the bar? Varsity Boys Track — 75 GIRLS CAPTURE COUNTY, The Varsity Girls Track Team had a terrific season this year. It was a season in which dreams came true. They won the County Meet for the first time ever. This was the first time a Cowan girls' team has ever won the County in any sport. They won the Confer- ence for the second straight year, and combined with boys' team to win the Parker Relays again. The team had an excel- lent record of 9-1. Far Right: County Champion Stacey Shockley shows us her excellent form in the shot put Above: The Blockhawks certainly are 1 after the Conference victory Below: Sandy Clark leads her opponent on the first lap of her speciality, the 800. County winners were Stacey, Susie, Sandy, and the 1600 Relay Team. Conference winners were Susie, Sandy, Colleen, and the 1600 Relay Team. The 800 and 1600 Relay Teams and seven individuals qualified for the Sectional. Colleen advanced to the Regional in the 400 by placing fourth, and Sandy in the 800 by placing third. Sandy ad- vanced to the State for the sec- ond year in a row by placing fifth at the Regional. Sandy placed 10th overall at the State which was held at the I.U.P.U.I. Track and Field Stadium. 76 — Varsity Girls Track CONFERENCE, AND PARKER RELAYS! The girls practiced many hours after school. Their effort and hard work resulted in a great season. Teamwork was a key to their suc- cessful season. It took every member of the team to accom- plish what they did. With the loss of only two excellent seniors, the future looks bright for the Varsity Girls Track Team. Ihm 1_«T J :4ft ' ■Vt ! Varsity Girls Track — 77 CHEERLEADER The 1982-1983 School year held much for all the cheer- leaders. The Cowan cheer- leaders put time, effort and of course the main ingredient, spirit, into their work. All the way from the halls to the gym. The signs that fired up the fans and team could be seen on your way to class or on your way by one of the team members' houses. The enthusiasm started at the UCA summer camp the cheerleaders went to last summer, through the competition they participated in at the Muncie Malls, and lasted to the last game. The cheerleaders wish to thank the fans and teach- ers who put time in helping with decorating and sign painting. It took all to make this year a suc- cess. SPIRIT ... CATCH IT! TIME OUT ... Their work isn't hard but we couldn't have a library without them. The VTR workers video tape the ballgames and other spe- cial events. They are a big help to the school, for they tape all the special happenings so we can remember them in later years. The OEA participated in many events this year. They participated in the district con- test and did well. There were two state contest winners, De- anna Baker and Peggy Ruster. Dana Smith was elected State Reporter, and Deanna Baker was elected State Vice-Presi- dent. It was a very good year for the Cowan OEA. The Pep Club was very busy raising spirits in the school. They had a lot of members and re- ceived a lot of support from the students. Thanks to them everyone got enthused at the ballgames. Thanks a lot! PEP The 1982-83 mascots, Vic Briggs and Jenny Dalton. Graduates Take The Final Step Of The Long Journey A Journey of a Thousand Miles begins with a Single Step ... graduation was the beginning and the ending step for many of the graduates of the Class of '83. At the conclusion of the Commencement Exercise on Sunday May, 22, Sixty-six young adults scattered their different ways, to begin to take another single step. It was hard to imagine for many of your classmates, this would be your final memory of 13 years together. Taking this step will affect the rest of our lives, it is a scary and eerie feeling. Many of the graduates are leaving for college, moving away from home, and others are taking bigger steps and moving out-of-state. Whatever the case may be, each and every one of us must walk, jog or run every step of our long journey. Everyone feeling a little different and a little strange and a little tired, but all pleased because they all have crossed the finish line at the same time — GRADUATION 1983. Above Mike Shirey changes his tassel to become a real graduate.
