WE FACE THEM EVERY DAY. HERE AT CHS THE CHALLENGES ARE ABUNDANT. WHETHER IT IS A COMPETITIVE SPORT, THE PERFECTION OF MUSIC, THE CREATION OF ART, OR EXPANDING OUR KNOWLEDGE... SCHOOL LIFE Each person has something special about them and student life shows how they display that something special! New Wave hair cuts, (short hair with hair cut out around the ears leaving little “sideburns”) were worn by both guys and girls. This cut showed off girls’ bright and wild earrings, and revealed a few pierced ears amongst the boys. OP (Ocean Pacific) T-shirts and other tees of that style were worn by many, also Ralph Lauren polo shirts. Buttons with a variety of sayings were worn everywhere, long ties were the girls’ new thing, and designer jeans still walked the halls. Dancers weren’t the only ones to wear leg warmers this year and many times girls donned a mini shirt with them. Ruffled tops for girls and pullover sweaters for guys were worn for a more dressy look, while sweats were the new casual look! Rock music is still popular and some of the groups and soloists who were quite big were John Cougar, Journey, Michael Jackson, and Men At Work. The song “Valley Girl” written and sung by Frank Zappa and his daughter Moon Unit gave us a San Fernando Valley lingo that was very catchy! Top: Could that be something other than a business call? Athletes have goals of their own and for their team and school. They strive to be their best. To achieve in sports you have to be dedicated and work for victory. Most students participated in more than one sport and many excel in each sport. During the four years of high school, athletes earn points for each sport they’re in. Some even earn enough points to receive a C jacket, which is quite an honor. Right: You mean this ball? Below: Practice makes perfect, doesn’t it Mark and Donny! THE ARTS ... Some students choose to be involved in the arts. Juniors and Seniors have the privilege of participating in their class plays. Although there is not a drama class, these plays give those interested in the production of a play a chance to show their talents. For those students who enjoy singing or playing an instrument, chorus class and band offer the opportunities to do so! Concerts are performed by both band and chorus, plus some students even go to contest. In art class or club students develop their imagination through the expression of art. Two vocational courses are taught by Covington teachers, Agriculture Sales Service by Mr. Keith Davidson, and the Intensive Office Lab by Mrs. Cheryl Blank. Also located in the Covington area are three other programs: Health Occupations — is a program designed to help students plan for a realistic career goal in the health field, through class room training, plus cooperative job experience. This challenge is shared by a group of people that make up the service personnel. This group consists of the cooks, that always manage to cook and serve the food and then wash the dishes plus show their artistic and poetic talents by making posters backing our sports teams. The custodians which have the huge challenge of keeping the school clean and doing any maintenance, for instance this year they repaired all the lockers number about 500, over Christmas break which was a huge job. The bus drivers have a big challenge too. They have the job of transporting most of the students to and from school everyday. To all of these people we owe a big “THANKS”. CHS Breaks Even — With Class With a 5-5 over-all record, and 3-4 conference record, the 1982 football season was both satisfying and disappointing. Led by four seniors, the Trojans gave up an average of only 13 points a game, an outstanding statistic. There were several close games that were decided in the final minutes, including an overtime win against South Vermillion. Brad Wright was the Captain and M.V.P. Roger Benting led the team in tackles. Brad and Roger were named to the All-Conference team and the Bi-County All-Stars. Others named Bi-County All-Stars were Tom Allen, Eric Randles, Shawn Orlea, Doug Hunter, Pete Grogg, and Mark Woodrow. The 1982 team was just that, a “TEAM”. The players, coaches, and managers all worked together to give Covington a football team to be proud of. Right: Eric Randles makes another great catch. The surprised candidates waited all day to hear the announcement of the queen during halftime of the football game. We also won the game with a score of 34-16 over the Falcons. The evening was a special spotlight for the ladies being escorted across the football field. A fun filled day was ended romantically with a dance at the high school including a special chair for our 1982 Queen Tammy Haxton. Even though practices were rough and Mr. Milach was tough, the applause of the audience and the “Great Job” by Mr. Milach, made it a very rewarding and worthwhile season. The Attitude Award was received by Randy Syfert. Outstanding Marching Awards were presented to Suzanne Davis, freshman; Amy Ohl, sophomore; Carrie Hegg, junior; and Eric Richardson, senior. Carrie McKinney received the Most Outstanding Trojanette Award. This year the band marched their way through six home games, the jamboree, and two parades. Tennis Team Pushes Forward The 1982 Tennis Team finished with a Record of 5-10 this year. Out of the 19 people that were on the team only 4 were seniors. Eric Richardson, Mike Blom, Dave Dare and Dan Ives will all be greatly missed as they gave us good leadership throughout the season. The key to the future success of the Tennis program is in the players’ hands. They must play TENNIS, TENNIS, TENNIS, this summer for our Tennis Team to be competitive next year. Remember there is no substitute for a positive attitude and great work ability. Top Right: Senior Eric Richardson returns the ball with a smash. But 1982 really shined for the Trojans with a Bi-County Championship, a 13-6 record and 2nd in the WRC. With good coaching from Mr. Partezana and leadership from Captain and MVP Jerry Askren, this year’s team was much improved. Jeff Davis was a big part of this improvement and was voted the team’s Most Improved Runner. The Trojans won the Bi-County Championship for the first time since 1978, by a narrow two points 28-30 over a tough Seeger team. The Trojans on the All Bi-County team were J. J. Everson, Jerry Askren, Chris Cloud and Jeff Davis. After placing 6th last year in the WRC Championship the Trojan runners had a strong showing of 2nd behind North Vermillion. Covington had the most people on the All Conference team this year with Jerry Askren fourth and J. J. Everson fifth. After losing only two seniors, Jerry Askren and Rick Pelkey the underclassmen of J. J. Everson, Chris Cloud, Jeff Davis, Wayne Wichus and Jack Hayden will be a power to contend with. And with a little help from a few others, the Covington Cross-County Team will be very successful next year. Top Left: Jack Hayden charges up a hill. This was quite an accomplishment after the off season of last year. James stressed defense, this helped Covington become one of the top two defensive teams in the surrounding area. The highlights of the season were beating Fountain Central for the first win, and by beating Crawfordsville for the first time in 32 years, in their gym. 38 Above: Brad Wright intent on his purpose. This isn’t an easy job, because sometimes it’s hard to keep themselves spirited too! So for this and many other reasons, we say Thank You! 42 JV GIRLS KEEP PUSHING ON! The 82-83 basketball season was to be a year of experience for the young JV players. The season started out slow, but with each performance, these inexperienced players greatly improved. Jeff Snoddy ran the 300 low hurdles in the Sectional. Covington qualified in the Sectional for the 400 relay. The runners for this event were Jeff Snoddy, Tony Coleman, Larry Askren, and Kevin Haga. In the field events, Captain Roger Benting qualified for the Sectional and placed sixth in the discus. Jerry Askren whom was voted most valuable, qualified for the Sectional in the 1600 and in the 3200 meter run, along with freshman J. J. Everson. Our special “team” of over one hundred members wore personalized t-shirts the day of the show with each committee wearing a different color. Our theme was centered around the popular television show, The A-Team. The prizes, which are awarded each year, went to Milo Richey for Best Drawings, Doug Hunter for Best Craft, Roger Benting for Best Senior Exhibit, and Janet Evans for Best of Show. The new prize this year went to the Dungeons and Dragons Blacklight room for Best Committee. Highlights of our show included the Big “A” which was constructed in the center of the room and the dark dungeon set up in the locker room. Students roam the halls in strange get-ups, admiring the genius creations of others, while teachers grit their teeth and bear it. Some teachers though, show their true colors by joining in with the fun! This year the days were backwards inside-out autograph day, dress up day, and Black and Gold Crazy color day. For each day one boy and girl from each class is chosen for the best “outfit,” for which they receive a prize. Each class also decorates their hall with a theme about the Trojans. This year’s winning hall was the Senior’s with the “James Gang,” which centered on the idea of the new coach Mr. James, and his wild Team of Shooters! These are just two of the many helpful advantages of the Covington Newspaper. The yearbook staff went through many challenging times this year. Putting “challenges” together took many hours of hard work and dedication. Through the year, meetings during and after school were scheduled to try to beat the next deadline. Senior Slave Week isn’t the only special thing about being a senior. Some of us get to participate in the Mock Wedding and the Senior Play. Prom is also very special. A comedy which centers around two sisters who are presented with many different conflicts. The sisters are to take care of the house while their widowed mother is away, but the chaos begins when the girls’ two unwanted aunts show up. The younger daughter, Patsy, and the boy next door, Woody Dodge are in cahoots to get rid of the aunts and Faith Stetson’s boyfriend, Norby Woodruff. They seem to prefer Ronald Fischer, an egomaniac. During the aunts stay, Veronica, the domineering one, took a liking to the family doctor, and also took great pleasure in ordering around her meek sister Stella, and the house maid Marion Eagens. When the girls’ mother, Helen, returned home, she had good news. Dr. Jim had proposed to her and she accepted. It has been one of my best and most memorable year ever and it has really meant a lot to me. It may be because the school is so small and I have learned to know everybody. My school in Sweden has about 1500 students and the only advantage is that it has a lot of good looking girls there. Why I came here? Thats a good question. If I could have choosen what state to go too, I would have picked Florida, Texas, Colorado or California, to a big city and a big school. But now I have changed my mind about the school and the city but not the states. The good thing with a small school is that everybody knows who I am and I like that. Then there’s the food. I don’t understand how I could eat that junk food in one year without getting sick. In a couple of years I probably going to discover that I have cancer because of the food here (I lie). I also must say that the school is easy compared with Sweden. I wish I could go here three more years, then my grades should be good enough to become President. This year I played tennis for the first time ever. I really enjoyed it and at the end of the season I made the team. In the spring I plan to play golf and we are going to win both sectional and WRC. I have start to like football, because when I first came here I didn’t understand anything and I thought it looked like wrestling. It’s really going to hurt when I have to leave for Sweden. I would like to thank everybody that has made this year so wonderful for . me. Also, thanks to the taxpayer for paying for my visit at the school and the faculty for having patience with my bad English. I just want to say that I have made friends that I’m never going to remember to forget and the memory of this school and city is ---- going to be with me forever. I say as my old buddy Doug once said, “I SHALL RETURN”. 112 Juniors Almost at the Top Lisa Adams Diana Barker Russell Barker Sherri Barker Tom Bodine Mike Booe Polly Brooks Bill Brown Josie Buck Mike Carter 113 Melanie Ferguson Pam Fye Alan Conner Vicky Conrad Robert Crowder Brett Galloway Julie Galloway Chrysta Goley Pete Grogg 114 Monica Haas Rick Hall Kelly Hickman Scott Hines Kim Hunt Doug Hunter Roger Keller Elvin Kiger Asa Kinneer Melvin Kiger Pam Kent Lisa Kibler Dwight Hollowell Trina Howard David Huffman Laurie Kammin J.
