1978 HORIZONS HORIZONS ... Lead In Many Directions . . . Today we are learning to live, through the excitement of someone special or the frustrations and bewilderments of an unfulfilled dream. Today we are living tomorrow's sunsets. We are inclined to be hip but our awkward age relates us with the past . . . Therefore learning to set our sights on our own horizon and plan a road to choose directs us toward our own sunset whether it be on a country road or a highway. This horizon consists of a designated length one chooses to travel to find his sunset. This sunset is achieved at C. H. S. through class participation, textbooks, novels, and mostly through yourself. 2 Down Many Different Roads E 3 4 Toward Many Different Goals Inside every student at C.H.S. there is an innocent child wanting protection but also an adult seeking recognition of his maturity. High school life- it shapes our minds, gives us a purpose, and provides us with a means for achieving an identity. In this school you can find a variety of provisions, such as love, understanding and support. Finally we bade the year farewell and began our approach upon another horizon. 5 ALBUM Lori Bever Seniors 7 Tina Alward David Barker Tom Bell Diana Bodine Kenny Bowling Shane Bowling 8 Seniors Richard Bushue Kenny Chapman Ronda Chapman James Clarkston Kelly Cooper Bob Drummond Roger Clarkston Janice Cope Sheila Mycroft Dunham Greg Clingan Mike Drollinger Tony Dunham Seniors 9 Beth English Steve Goley 10 Seniors Elise France Jean Graves Steve George LeAnn Griffin Ed Grogg Carol Heideman Lynn Gross Jeannie Hines Cindy Hay Tom Hoagland Brenda Holycross Tina Homaday Quella Howard Seniors 11 Bryan Hughes 12 Seniors an Umb Marka Huxford Curt Knecht Jeff Lappin Rita Jones Jay Lewis Ken Kokotkiewicz LeaAnn Massey Jeanene Madaus Bruce McDaniel Edsel McConnell Nancy Matthew's Pam Newkirk Jim Nixon Joe Noble Seniors 13 Lee K. What is a senior? The answer depends on who you ask. To teachers and the principal, seniors are the people you don't need to worry about getting lost between classes--at least because they don't know where they are. Seniors are supposed to know all the rules--and also all the ways around the rules. By the time you are a senior, you've been through every excuse there is in the book regarding why you are late for class. To parents, seniors are in the most traumatic year since first grade. Seniors are about to leave the nest for the last time. Jobs, college, or the service await those who don't get married. After graduation, parents sit back, breathe a sigh of relief, and say, We made it. To the seniors themselves, they are usually so busy with the events of their last year, that they don't really have time to reflect on what it is like to be a senior--mostly, it is just a hectic, crazy, time. Whatever it is, being a senior is something you probably won't forget for the rest of your life. SPONSORED BY COVINGTON BUILDING LOAN Clubs 67 TROJAN The yearbook staff is one of the most difficult clubs to participate in at CHS. It requires dedication, patience and the ability to stay with a job until it is finished. To produce an attractive yearbook that everyone will enjoy involves more than just pasting pictures-layouts must be drawn up, the copy written ads sold, and lots of other details attended to that may seem unimportant, but really go a long way toward the finished product. This year to raise money for the yearbook funds the staff sponsored a dance, a raffle, had a bake sale, and sold pictures. Coach Hunter It was a frustrating, almost year, said Coach Jack Hunter. There is a Chinese proverb which says, Fall down three times, get up two, and the Trojan varsity lived by that saying, proving their courage many times by getting up to win after a frustrating loss. After a great season start 30-0 win over Western Boone's Stars, the Trojans wrestled a tough 21-6 win from rival Turkey Run-- but only with the injury of Tim Myers. The third outing saw Seegers Semi-State squad whip the Trojans 26-0. At this point, it would have been easy to give up, but the offense came alive and the defense--tough all year-- held for a 20-0 win over South Newton. Following a big cross county win over Attica, 38-16, the Trojans ended up on the short end of a 21-8 shootout with Fountain Central's Mustangs. Against North Vermillion, the team proved again that they could play the game in a second half come-from-behind 15-14 win. Mid season injuries began to take their toll as Covington's game Trojans took on the always tough Southmont Mounties, and lost a 7-0 cliff hanger, and Ed Grogg. The team rallied again for an 11-6 win over North Montgomery. In the season capper, Rockville just had too much for the tired and injury plagued squad to handle, and the 18-0 score ended the season that was almost a great one. Defense was an intergal part of Trojan football, with Greg Allen, Curt Knecht, and Ed Grogg leading the way. Experience wins football games as often as skill, and next year's squad will have some big shoes to fill when it comes time to replace the likes of Dunham, Grogg, Drummond, McDaniel, Allen, Knecht, Chapman, Nixon, Pierson, Stump, George, Sherman and Goley. Included in this lineup were five all conference players, an all state Class A honorable mention, and a record-breaking tackier. Tony Dunham takes it around the end. Trojans Post Best Record In State There are 399 high schools that play basketball in Indiana, and 2 of those teams finished the regular season undefeated--Covington and Lewis Cass. That tells you what kind of a year it was for the Covington Trojan basketball team. Starting with a close 59-58 win over West-Side, the Trojans rolled over team after team on their way to the Wabash River Valley Conference Championship, The Bi-County Championship, and the Holiday Tourney Championship. The season was highlighted by the 70-68 overtime victory against Benton Central, and a close victory over up-the-river opponent Seeger--a rehearsal of things to come later in the sectionals. What made the Trojans click? Coach Dwayne Rater said, Five strong seniors, led by Dale White, were the key to success. White took home practically every honor you could expect: Selection to the Indiana All Star Squad, All Conference Player, and several magazines' choice for High School All-American. Rounding out the starting five were Jeff Pierson and Brian Hughes at guard, and Curt Knecht and Tony Dunham at forwards. The Key to success in any sport is building a system that will train young players to replace the varsity graduates each year. Much of the success of the Trojan basketball story can be attributed to the efforts of the Reserve and Freshman coaches, Mr. Robert Watt, and Mr. Bruce Torgersen. Reserve and Freshman squads are the training ground for later varsity action -- and most varsity players have been seasoned in Reserve and Freshman play. A look at these squads is a glimpse at the future of Trojan basketball, and the future looks bright.
