Impressions '77 Images forever held in mind, each with a special place. Mirages of time and space, shimmering, often beyond our reach. Preludes of things to come as we plotted our shining sun. Reality that we wouldn't let intrude upon the dreams we dreamed. Echoes sounding through our mind memories passed, things we're yet to find. Scenes replayed, revisited by those who have helped form our future. Signs of change with passing years accompanied by our laughter, joy and tears. Inseperable from friends of the past hoping that our togetherness would last. Ornate dreams composed by our fantasies, creations of the mind let loose to fly. Never ending streams of memories to cherish hopes that should ever live, not perish. Senior year, when we seem to loose touch, is really the beginning of so much. Jeanene Madaus Impressions? Impressions are different things to different people. What one person may remember another may forget. Impressions are images of things that have happened and perhaps, of things to come. Whatever your own personal definition of the word impressions , it is definitely memories ... Students of Covington High School have many memorable events to think back on throughout their lives. Impressions of exuberance and enthusiasm in whatever is abound at C. H. S. The Covington Trojans are ardently supported and victory is eagerly anticipated at every event. The support of the fans is not limited to any one event either; every happening is equally supported, and team members are cheered on to a spectacular victory. Fall is a beginning, and in October the Senior Home Ec. class did a mock imitation of another one of life's beginnings--marriage. TOP: Dennis Hutson makes a serve in P.E.; Fans in the stands at Trojan Complex; Shane Orlea being natural. MIDDLE: Dennis Poer and Penny Ricketts married? James Clarkston at work in library. BOTTOM: Denise Grimes at lunch; Football action; Mickey Bardos in class. Life at C.H.S. presents a challenge to us: a challenge to cultivate our talents, make the most of them, and to deal with the situations which arise. We are just beginning to realize the magnitude of this challenge, and those things which seemed so far in the future, are now upon us. All of the people in the community who are connected with the school and its activities have helped in some way to influence the lives of students. They have played a vital part in helping to prepare us to face the situations and challenges which will confront us in the not so distant future. At that time, we must apply the things which we have acquired during our years at C.H.S. TOP: Tammy Curtis hard at work; Chorus class between songs. BOTTOM: Christy Woodard and Bonnie Sherman, our efficient office help? ; Stacy Moore engaging in solitary thought; Coach Hunter talking the situation over with Dennis Poer. 7 TTime is one of life's most precious resources and it is respected at C.H.S. No moment is wasted. If the students are not busy in classes with their studies, they are involved in one of the many activities at C.H.S., whether it is participating in a club activity, pursuing a favorite pastime, or just goofing off. The ability to engage in self-expression and individuality has always been one of the most cherished talents of the human race. Such self-expression is encouraged by the wide variety of learning experiences 8 offered at C.H.S. Students are urged by their teachers and one another to try to establish goals and strive to reach them. We believe that even though we may not always attain perfection, trying to do your best is the most important part of any goal. TOP: Margo Ramey and Martella Auter getting involved in one form of self-expression; Ken Lewsader, Roy Bainbridge, Gene Cummins, and Mike Drollinger discussing the latest magazines. BOTTOM: Penny Ricketts, as she displays her winning smile; Kenja Cunningham learning to develop her artistic talent; Rhonda Chapman as she strives to expand her knowledge; George Edwards consulting with Duane Drollinger about a drafting problem. 9 Each day is the beginning of a new experience. We share our souls, and at the same time strive to maintain our individuality, as well as respecting each other as human beings. Individuality is encouraged at C.H.S., through a wide variety of classes and activities. The English program, presents a classic example of this, where students may choose classes according to their own personal interests. Also, a person may choose classes which will prepare him for further education, or those which lead directly to the business world. The activities at C.H.S. also cover a very wide spectrum. They range from those in which students display the talents they have learned, such as the Art Show, to much more formal events, such as the prom and graduation. TOP: Pep club takes a time out; Trojans keep movin' on; Your hair looks fine Helen Leak; Dennis Poer in Art. BOTTOM: Roger Davis on his way to school; What are you eating, Steve Denhart? ; Does this place look familiar? RuthannHunt, who are you staring at? 12 I elating to others and learning to work together in the spirit of cooperation is an essential part of C.H.S. The how and why of the many different types of relationships are discussed in the Home Ec. classes. Both girls and boys are able to increase their understanding of the intricate balance that is a part of human relationships, as Home Ec. helps them to develop their ability to deal with the practical aspects of life. Conversation is very important in relating to others and it is a well-practiced art at C.H.S. During lunch hour you can always find animated discussion among both students and teachers as they relax before afternoon classes begin. TOP: Poster in Home Ec. Pep Band as they display winning spirit. Toni Messick in cafeteria. MIDDLE: Brian Woodrow with his usual enthusiasm. Pep Band. BOTTOM: Students engaged in the battle against hunger. Yearbook staff at rally. Steve Alkire and Alan Abernathy in lunch line. North Central Visits C.H.S. C.H.S. was visited by the North Central Association team chaired by Dr. Harold Breniman, during December 7-10. The North Central Association is a voluntary league of schools and colleges within a nineteen state region. A full evaluation is required of every member school once every seven years. During their visit the NCA team met with various students and parents, as well as faculty. They also observed classes and classroom facilities. Recommendations from past evaluations have resulted in the development of the Intensive Office Lab, the Agriculture Work Program and the much-needed school nurse. 16 OPPOSITE PAGE: Many meetings took place during evaluation week, during these parents were also involved. THIS PAGE: TOP: An evaluation team member typing a report. BOTTOM: Members of the North Central Evaluation Team. 17 SCHOOL BOARD: Mrs. Carolyn Etchison, Ronald Crowder, John Fulton, Dale Cates, Richard Klage William Holstine, Jr. In order to keep things running smoothly, it is necessary to have some supervision, which is achieved through the administration. Any number of problems arise during the course of a school year that require knowledge about the Carolyn Hines situation. All major decisions come from the school board. The officers include Richard Klage, Pres.; John Fulton, V. Pres.; and Carolyn Etchison, Sec. Other personnel include Mrs. Mycroft, School Board Treas.; Mrs. Hines, Mary Ellen Mycroft Superintendent's Sec.; Mr. Holstine, Superintendent; Mr. Maymon, Principal; Mrs. Allen, Office Sec.; Mr. Griswold, Guidance Counselor; Mrs. Randles, Guidance Sec.; and Mrs. Elmore, Extra-Curricular Sec. 18 OFFICE GIRLS are L to R: Mrs. Allen (Secretary), Lisa Bowling, Christy Woodard, Tammy Curtis, Bonnie Sherman, Julie Holycross, Martha Porter, Cathy Fields, and Quella Howard. Mr. James Griswold. The C.H.S. Office helpers, with their warm smiles and readiness to help, were an added attraction to the office. They helped take a load off the office secretaries by taking phone messages, delivering and picking up absence slips, running errands, and typing. 19 Seniors . Class Of 1978 The Juniors, during their first year as upperclassmen, encountered many new experiences. Among these were the class play and their biggest task yet, the Prom. Time was often spent making money for the Prom by selling magazines, concessions, and dances. The committees also spent many hours planning and decorating for the special and memorable evening. The class officers: Pres. -Dale White, V. Pres. -Kelly Cooper, Sec. -Jeanene Madaus, Treas.-Quella Howard, Student Council-Beth English, Shane Bowling, Randy Roark, and Mike Wallace also helped make their float for Homecoming, Hunter's Paradise the winning entry. All of the activities in which the Class of 78 participated helped bring them closer together and made them realize that teamwork plays a vital part in their lives. Class Of '79 The Sophomore class used the experience they had gained the year before to get more involved in the activities. Getting class rings is always a thrill and this year was no exception. They shared moments of success and failure. Going steady, breaking up, making the team, but not being the star, having fun, as well as working all played a part in the changes which the Sophomores brought about and had to face. The officers of the Class of 79 are: Pres. -Tina Holycross, V. Pres. -Carol LeClaire, Sec. -Treas. -Diana Chapman, and Student Council-Bruce Johannes, Scott Dunlop, Jeanell Smith, and Cary Crowder. Class officers are students selected by their classmates to represent and organize activities for the school year. The officers of every class are in charge of the planning of a homecoming float, hall decorations, and many others. Underclassmen help select and order class rings, the Juniors plan and carry out the prom, and'Seniors make decisions in preparation for graduation. 46 Faculty . . . Besides the students and the administration, there is another group which is vital in order to keep C. H. S. running smoothly. This is the teachers, who are between the insecurity of student teaching and the golden age of retirement. All teachers have the same basic goals in mind: to provide the students with an education, offer guidance, and prepare them for the future. Although the goals of teachers are similar, they are attained in a variety of ways, from lecturing, to tests, to general class discussions. After all, who else could work into one period a 45 minute lecture, a 10 point quiz, review for a test, hand back last week's assignment, and give students time to study. The show started at 9:00 that morning and lasted until 8:00 that evening. The idea for the Art Show ( The Little Village of Arts and Crafts ) was by Mrs. Hunter, the Art teacher. She thought that students should be given a chance to display the items and ideas originated by the art students. The Art Show has a three-fold purpose; demonstration, exhibition, and the sale of various articles. Each committe was in charge of an individual store from which was designed as a prop. A tree was placed in the center of the multi-purpose room to encourage the village theme. Each committee was under the direction of a chairman and they are as follows: Black light, Sharon Hambright; Cartoons, Kenny Kokotkiewicz; Clay, Zack Rainey and Becky Grogg; Clowns, Bonnie Sherman; Crafts, Lisa Strawser; Furniture Refinishing, Cari Hayman; Jewerly, Susie Etchison and Printing, Julie Holycross. Thirty-four students were first-time honor jacket winners and seven seniors earned all seven service bars at the 21st annual Honor Banquet. The jackets are earned by making straight A's or all A's and one B in solid subjects for one semester with a service bar being awarded for each semester in which the above criteria are met. Other awards given were Trojan Honor Pins, which are awarded to seniors, juniors, and sophomores who have been on the high school semester honor roll during one of the past two semesters, and certificates, which are given to those who made a nine-weeks honor roll. Interstate Sand and Gravel Co. and The Fountain Trust Co. donated the awards which were sponsored by the American Association of University Women and College Men's Club. Covington began its honor program in 1956 and was the first school in Indiana to award academic achievements the same way athletic achievements have been recognized. The new Trojan Sports Complex was the reason behind increased enthusiasm and spirit during the past year. The land gift of 30 acres from Interstate Sand and Gravel Co. and 8.3 acres donated by Rod Schafer, was just the beginning of a dream to come true. The Sports Complex was built for about $140,000 but is worth a half million dollars, more than three times as much. The value of community involvement and support, however, was incalculable. From the time the land was received until the football field was first used on August 28, 1976, planning and work was being done on almost a daily basis. Members of the Trojan Complex Board, the City of Covington, and the High school athletic department met and decided on what they wanted: a new lighted football field; an all-weather quarter-mile track; bleachers for 1,700; an electronic score board; a refreshment stand and restrooms; a baseball diamond. Much of the money, labor, and materials were donated by the community, thereby cutting total expenses. The concession stand was the donation of the Band Parents and was built with bricks they hauled and cleaned. It would be impossible to list all of the people who gave of their money, efforts, and time to make this dream into reality. However, a great big THANK YOU should be extended to those who made the Trojan Sports Complex possible. 1. A real view of the new Trojan Complex. 2. The press box. 3. An extra incentive to succeed was present this year, the new Trojan Complex. The first game seemed to make all of the sacrifices worth while. Considering all of this, plus the coaching staff, it is no wonder that the Trojans ended the season with a victorious record of 7-3. 1977 Trojans L-R FIRST ROW Brian Woodrow (Tri-Capt. ), Mark Powell, John Talbert, Fred McGurk, Danny W anti and, Gregg Dennis, Dennis Poer (Tri-Capt. ), Tim Auter (Tri-Capt. ), Stan Hardy, Greg Denhart, Coach Hunter, Asst. The Victorious Varsity finished the season with an outstanding record of 22-2 and a record of 7-0 in the WRC. The Trojans used much speed and skill to outclass their opponents and used the depth of the team to insure victory. When the season was coming to a close, the team came on strong to win the sectional and advance to the Lafayette regional. The Trojans proceeded with the intention of winning. They downed Kankakee Valley and then were bitterly defeated by Lafayette Jeff with a score of 58-61. The 76-77 Trojans were the pride of C. H.S.; now they are just a memory, that will not soon be forgotten. But as we remember, the Trojans were clearly the best once again. 123 Covington Trojans Win Conference The accomplishments of the Trojans this year were many. First, came the Covington Holiday Tourney, which was held here for the first time. The Trojans downed Attica and Seeger to win the trophy. It was the first time the girl’s team had ever had a man for a coach. The girls were also involved in the basketball preview for the first time. The team spent the first few weeks of practice getting used to hard work and aching muscles. But, they were willing to put up with all of this in order to improve the team. When the season was over, the varsity had a conference record of 3-4 and a season record of 4-8. Mr. Snodgrass, Mrs. Hughes, Principal Secretary The Middle School faculty has an important task, to prepare students for high school. In middle school, students learn to go from room to room for each class, adjust their study habits, as well as improve their minds through classes. The classes take on a wider range in middle school, and offer students a chance to learn more about areas they are interested in. Middle school also offers students the chance to get involved in athletics, art, and music. This gives them a taste of what the areas can offer and encourages them to improve their talents, so that they will have a good background when they enter high school. The teachers attempt to do just this. They use various methods in their attempts to guide, teach, and improve students, but the common goal of the teachers is always present.
