Record-Breaking Track Team Even from the beginning of the season, Coach Bell knew that this team could keep up with any other team from any school. They won the Bi-County and brought home the trophy from the Attica Relays. They scored a strong third in the WRC meet and their five man sectional entry placed fifth. Six school records were broken and a new one established in the discus event. Greg Clawson lowered the 880 standard to 2:04.8. Dean Dunham smoothed down the 220 mark to 21.9. Kenny Drollinger stretched the high jump record to 6’1%”. Greg Kiger flashed to 50.7 in the 440. The new discus throw was 114'8Vi” by Zach Thomas. In addition, Gary Myers, Dean Dunham, Greg Kiger, and Gale VanPelt lowered the 880 Relay record to 1:35.7, and exchanging Greg Clawson for Myers, streaked to the new 3:30.7 time for the Mile Relay. 1973 track team members: FIRST ROW: Dave Williams, Gale VanPelt, Kenny Drollinger, Bruce Goodrich, Greg Kiger, Greg Clawson, Zach Thomas, Dean Dunham. Perhaps the reason we did so well is because we functioned as a team, as one working unit. We worked hard and when we rested, our minds were still on running, jumping, and throwing the discus. Coach Bell was a big influence because he made us become athletes and demanded excellence. It was nice to have some working non-athletes, like the managers and our statistician Vicki Talbert around to lend a hand. 29
