One of the major strengths of this year's varsity basketball team was their exceptional team effort. The team strove for unity like every team that wishes to be successful. Coach Rater’s mighty TROJANS combined their effort unselfishly to work as a team. The determined Covington Trojans sparked up to defeat the Attica Ramblers and gain revenge on the Fountain Central Mustangs to win their fourth consecutive Holiday Tourney. Dealing Benton Central only their second loss of the season was one of the most exciting basketball contests of the 1972-1973 season. The game against the Bisons went into a double overtime with the TROJANS prevailing by two, 73-71. One week after upsetting Benton Central the TROJANS handed North Montgomery their first conference loss. The close, hard fought game was a battle to the final seconds with the elated TROJANS going to the showers with another well-deserved victory. Going into the Fountain Central sectional with seven other tough teams, all fired up and fighting for victory, the River Rats put forth tremendous effort and beat the North Vermillion Falcons in the opening game of the sectional. The semi-finals of the sectional put the River Rats against a strong Seeger team. This well-matched game sent the Indians back to their tee-pees—defeated. In the final game of the sectional the River Rats met their arch-rivals, Fountain Central for the third and last time. The TROJANS gave everything they had into that game, but the clock ran out on them with the Mustangs ahead by a slim four points, thus ending the memorable year of the “River Rats. Trojans Prove To Be Crowd Pleasers Greg Kiger powerhouses through Fountain Centrals' Keeling and Crane to capture this rebound during the final game of the sectional. 23

Trojans Earn Nickname FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Barbara Hegg, Karin Scering, Vicki Talbert, Cindy Suzuki, Muff Bardos. SECOND ROW: Gregg Clawson, Kenny Drollinger, Gary Myers, Zach Thomas, Greg Kiger, Warren Allen, Dennis Burke. THIRD ROW: Assistant Coach Hobaugh, Kenny Cope, Tim Parke, Dean Dunham, Bruce Ford, Kevin Hauk, Dave Williams, Dave Hollowell, Coach Rater. The Covington basketball team also earned a name for itself as one ball club that would guarantee a highly competitive game. Coaches Rater and Hobaugh and the team learned that it took many hours of hard practice before they could revel in the glory of victory. The River Rats came home with the fourth consecutive Holiday Tourney Trophy. They beat Attica in the first game which gave them a chance to get revenge on Fountain Central. Coach Rater and Co-captain Greg Kiger proudly accept the Holiday Tourney trophy for the team. 24
