1967 TROJAN COVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL Covington, Indiana Traveling the Trojan Road in ’67 Homecoming Queen--Marge Wamick The next few pages unfold a panorama of the colorful school life along the 1967 Trojan Road. Along the main road, many paths lead to a great variety of activities, some work and some fun. New heroes arise from the muddy gridiron--and help to crown our new Homecoming Queen. Couples get 'hitched at the Sadie Hawkins Dance and honor the King and Queen of Dog-patch. Snow and cold come along with the basketball season--and the aftergame dances provide warmth and friendship among friendly rivals. Christmas season brings profitable tree sales by Seniors--and a successful Christmas Dance. Band and Chorus members are seen practicing hard for the Solo and Ensemble Contest. Students sweat over semester exams--twice! Baseball and Track seasons usher in milder weather. This is the season of hard practice for the Spring Show, which seems better year after year. The Juniors and Seniors spent a romantic evening on 'Paradise Isle', the scene of their annual Prom. Few tears were shed as the Seniors rounded the last bend of the 'Trojan Road'. 2 Jaycees back the Trojans to victory! 3 . . . Doing What Comes Naturally . . . Students and Teachers Join in the Fun 5 All together now--one, two, three . . . 6 Teachers reliving yesterdays. a Pleasant One 7 The 1967 Marching Trojans Display Their New Uniforms The year 1966 was a successful and very busy one for the Marching Trojans. Along with the eighty-two players were twirlers Hazel Ray, Jane Cline, Brenda Paxton, Rita Alward, and as an added attraction flag girls, Donna MyCroft, Debbie McCoy, Laura Bone, Linda Carr, Vicki Coffing, and Lynn Suzuki. Leading our 1966 Marching Trojans was Drum Majorette, Beth Shelby. Throughout the football season the Marching Trojans performed many interesting and unusual routines for the spectators. Again the Trojans were invited to march in the ISU Homecoming Parade and also to participate in the pre-game entertainment. Thanks to the leadership of Mr. Hicks, the Marching Trojan Band is recognized as one of the finest marching bands in Western Indiana. 9 IN CO N G R ESMr ... ACADEMICS Harrell Johnson whets student appetite for learning with smoke and smell. Mrs. Georgiana Ford helps the girls keep 'fit'. We Live by Science and Mathematics Our knowledge of science and mathematics is being added to so rapidly that the short high-school years barely give us a start in learning what we will need in life. We will be learning the rest of our days. Biology class members get first-hand knowledge of what is in a frog. 12 Laynos Billingsley proves that scientists are prepared for emergencies—during 'blackout'. Dale Clawson fills parentheses for math class. Richard Campbell helps biology students see the finer things. Gently boys. Electricity bites. 13 Don White keeps a tangent under control. Bruce Brown combines social studies with language learning. Rose Ann Korbel advises students about word usage. Language Is the James Johnson checks student literary efforts. 14 Pantomime message--without words--proves important of language. Ann Ritenour greets her morning class. Key to Understanding Judy Ashton greets us in French. Western civilization has been built and run by people that know at least two languages. We can only know what other people think as we understand their language-even if it is a form of English or American. Many important words mean different things to different people. To help pupils along the road to better understanding, Mrs. Ashton brought back recordings of French as it is spoken in France. Hearing his own voice helps students to learn better pronunciation. Pauline Terry gives an assist to Caeser. Business Training Essential for Full Life Practice--plus thought--makes perfect. Dwayne Rater coaching in business mathematics. Mrs. Gustafson shows Diane Gritten how to line a suit. Mrs. Abernathey gives students a background in the history of art. Art Takes Many Forms—Useful and Enjoyable Home Economics prepares girls for their future roles as dresses with proper accessories. Girls receive hints for homemakers. Enthusiastic seamstresses learn to make adding beauty and culture to their own homes as well their own clothes and becoming ways of wearing these as practice in preparing tasty, nutritious meals. Rule No. 1—Do not sew instructions Modeling left to right: P. Smith, C. Woodrow, R. Krout, P. Myers, V. into garment. Dewlin, B. Bodine, D. English. 17 Vocational Training Provides Experience The Agricultural department of Covington High School was greatly expanded this year by a greenhouse constructed by the Agricultural students. The Industrial Arts Department offers vital training in many areas of shop work. With the fine supervision of Mr. Sims and Mr. Certain, the vocational courses have provided students with basic skills which lead to future job opportunities. Mr. Sims displays geranium plants growing in the new greenhouse. Mr. Certain explains the function of an internal combustion engine. 18 ummninnuj Mrs. Betty Hegg . . . Remedial Reading teacher. Phys. Ed. Classes Stress Physical Fitness Physical Education classes seek to improve the physical fitness of today's youth. More than ever before our country needs men and women who are physically able to meet the strain and stress of the fast pace of today's living. Our P.E. program at Covington High aims for this goal. James Griswold . . . Guidance Counselor for C.H.S. 19 Today's Youth Are Tomorrow's Leaders Before we can be of any use to our government, we must have a knowledge of its background. In High School we study not only the History of the United States but also of the numerous other countries in the world. In studying them we begin to have an understanding of how they are run and what makes them collapse. As we progress, we learn how to take part through the study of Government and Economics. Someday the students who debated in the classrooms will be challenging an opponent on the floor of the House or Senate. 20 Mrs. Johnson points out the original 13 colonies to her Seventh Graders. Come on, Mr. Sager, tell us who is going to win the 1968 election. History involves not only studying, but actual firsthand experience. Boys, is this what our forefathers did??? Miss Hardin explains that the more extra books you read, the better you will understand History. Concert Band Tours Southern Indiana FIRST ROW: H. Ray, B. Paxton, J. Cline, P. Smith, J. Davan, V. The first public performance for the band was the annual Christmas concert. Playing old and new seasonal carols, the band presented a very fine concert for their audience. March was a very busy month for the C.H.S. concert band. During March the band joined with the bands from Attica and Fountain Central under the guidance of a special conductor, Dr. Henzie, to present the Annual Band Festival. Several days after the festival the C.H.S. concert band embarked on their annual tour. This year they toured Southern Indiana with St. Louis as their destination. While on tour the band played concerts at North Central, Fort Branch, and Mt. Vernon. As the School year comes to an end, the C.H.S. Concert Band joined with the H. S. chorus in their annual Spring Show as the final performance of a successful year. 22 Mr. Hicks Special Features The Senior Band accepts Banner from The Lions Club. School was dismissed in the afternoon and everyone went to the Courthouse lawn for a rousing pep session. In the evening the floats and cars were led by the Marching Trojan Band in a parade around the City Square. Although they were defeated, the Fighting Trojans gave their all in a tough fight against tire Georgetown Buffaloes. At half-time the queen candidates, Hazel Ray, Marge Wamick, Debby Woodrow, and Rita Woodrow were escorted to the field by Don Clark, Bruce Starkey, Jerry Wilson, and Steve Wittenauer to the tune of Let Me Call You Sweetheart. The Homecoming Queen, Marge Wamick, was crowned by co-captains Larry Alexander and Jim Ritenour. Every class from 7th to 12th worked to make its float or car the prettiest or most original. The Seniors took First Prize with their original display of Tan Their Hides, while the French Club car won First in the Car judging. Many Alumni attended the Homecoming Game and the dance in the Auditorium afterwards. This Homecoming is truly one to be long remembered. Spirit runs high at Pep Rally on Courthouse lawn. The FFA also sold garden seeds and sponsored a father and son banquet of which the President of the state FFA chapter was the guest speaker. The FFA members also attended judging contests where they judged soil, livestock, crop, poultry and dairy. All in all the FFA had a busy and great year. FFA Sweetheart 75 VICKY COFFING Student Council Raffles Football During the first week of school, Student Council members began the preparations for Homecoming, organizing a colorful parade, crowning a lovely queen, and planning a Homecoming dance. With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, He has wandered into an unknown land And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he lingers there. And you--oh, you, who the wildest yearn For an old-time step, and the glad return, Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here. Think of him still as the same.
