FOREWORD We, the Senior Class of '54, proudly present the Trojan. This yearbook attempts to portray the spirit of our school in words and pictures. In this book we have recon- structed, as nearly as possible, our everyday school life at C. H. S. Our school spirit is, in itself, dynamic and upon this fact we have based this annual. It is an extremely difficult task to express our deep sentiment for good old C. H. S. with pen and paper, but we have done our best and step back with pride to survey our work. Without the help and co-operation we received, it is highly probable that this book would not have been printed. Therefore, we wish to make the following acknowledgments: to Mr. Frank Conlin, our advisor, for his aid and adviceg to the entire student body for their co-operation, to our advertisers and sponsors who helped make this book possible, and to the entire faculty of the Covington Community Schools. As the Reader thumbs the pages of this book, may he think of it as a farewal salute from a successful class. +3- CONTENTS CLHSS CHRRHCTEIPISTICS GH .SCHOOL PUCTURE Nnruoun L Howafl 5 oen:TY I TVVLE nes SL Deoacnrnou 3 Fonewnreo 5 H. Consisting of four members, the first class graduated in 1881, after two years of instruction by the superintendent. In 1884, Superintendent V. E. Livengood increased the required time of study to three years and this course included such studies as trigonometry, astronomy, and political science. Until 1891, the superintendent had been the only faculty member, but at this time Miss Lethea Fertich became the first principal of the High School. Superintendent W. P. Hart increased the required time of study to four years in 1895. During the next few years, two classes entered and graduated from the High School in the same year, but in 1912, the plan of one graduating class per year was adopted again for further use by W. A. Davis. The High School Teaching Staff was increased to three teachers in 1895 and on May 8, 1897, the State Board of Education commissioned the High School. The Covington Schools formed a joint school corporation with Troy Township in 1945. In 1948, this corporation formed another corporation with Mound Township of Warren County. At the present time the Covington Community High School is classified by the State of Indiana, a first class commissioned high school, and it is accredited by the N. C. A. of colleges and secondary schools. There are three hundred and two students under its administration and sixteen faculty members on its teach- ing staff. -6- i 'ax Nl nl nl 3 XX ,,f , ,fl g iff? CLASS HISTORY On a typical fall day in September of 1942, several little six and seven year olds started out to lay the first stones in the foundation of their temple of education. As the years progressed, they grew both physically and mentally, creating a firm basis on which to erect years of more advanced trainingf By this time they had added to their group George Copsy, Ralph Corey, Albert Gritten, Margaret Phillips, Hubert Reed, Freeman Smith, Barry Switzer, and Franklin Wright. After eight years of fundamental education, they were ready to begin studies which would be of benefit to them in their not too distant life as young adults. They were joined in this, their Freshmen year by Orris Howard, Tom Bennett, Treva Rick- etts, Tom Lovell, Lois Waldron, and Peggy Allen from Rabb, State Line, and Portland Arch. In this first year of high school they set up a strong framework on which to build a solid and well-balanced education. They were supervised and represented socially by Miss Schwin and Mr. Van Lieu, class sponsors, and Patsy Thomas and Harold Hegg, student council members. The candidate for homecoming queen was Peggy Allen and the homecoming float was We're Washing Out Attica. The Fresh- men athletes also made a fine representation by winning the Wabash Valley Basketball Trophy and two trophies in the relays at Terre Haute. This group of hardy builders welcomed Wanda Ping to the fold as they entered their sophomore year here at CHS. Sophomore sponsors were Miss Schwin and Mr. Lynn. Student Council members for this year where Peggy Allen and Orris Howard. Pattie Randles was elected as candidate for the homecoming queen and added honor to the temple by tying the senior candidate. The float, We've Got Kentland Hooked, was awarded first place in the half-time festivities. As Juniors, the class elected officers as follows: President, Hubert Reed, Vice- President, Virginia Shelby, Secretary, Anne Ricketts, Treasurer, Franklin Wright, and Student Council Member, Lois Waldron. Elizabeth Ferguson was a new member of the class this year. The float, Massacre of the Bombers, took first place again in the homecoming parade. Candidate for queen was Patsy Thomas. The class added to their shrine of education the knowledge of salesmanship when they completed the annual magazine drive with a far greater profit than had ever been earned. Next came their first experience with drama as they prepared MAMA'S BABY BOY under the guidance of Mr. Conlin and Miss Schwin, using two casts of characters, which resulted in another success for the halls of memories in the nearly completed temple. The D. A. R. History awards were presented to Anne Ricketts and Peggy Allen on Class Night, along with the Girls' State and Boys' State selections, who were Virginia Shelby, Anne Ricketts, janet Hovermale, Lois Waldron, Patsy Thomas, Peggy Allen, and Franklin Wright. A very successful year was topped off with the greatest accomplish- ment of all, the Junior-Senior Reception held here at CHS. The theme was South of the Border. Exactly twelve years from their first introduction to public education, these same individuals began this, their last year of high school. The class now included Patricia Gasser, Morris Goodnight, and Ralph Corey. Class officers were President, Orris How- ard, Vice-President, Tom Bennett, Secretary-Treasurer, Anne Ricketts, Reporter, Vir- ginia Shelby, and Student Council Member, Lois Waldron. Sponsors were Miss Schwin and Mr. Miller. The senior candidate for homecoming queen was Patricia Gasser, and the float was Beatin' the Tails Off The Devils. The senior class took an active part in school plays and programs as well as handling the concessions at the basketball games. In this last year, a magnificient temple of everlasting knowledge was completed with a covering of social intelligence. This temple will always stand as a goal for the future seniors of Covington High School. She's saving money like mad so as to tour the United States. Maybe she'll find that charming young Prince. Margaret Phillips is head nurse in Lake View Hospital in Danville, Illinois. She has had several offers from other cities to work in their hospitals, but it seems she prefers to stay close to home and a certain young fellow. Wanda Ping is married and the mother of two boys. They take after their father and tend to be rather tall. Wanda is hoping to have a girl that won't be so tall. Hubert Reed has just become engaged, but it isn't quite time for matrimony yet. He still hasn't built that pretty nest for two. Of course, it can always be expanded later on. Anne Ricketts has recently arrived home from Paris where she was modeling dresses. She is glad to be home with her husband. Treva Ricketts is working as a private secretary for the Governor of our fine In- diana State. Too bad one has to be single to hold such a fine position. She will be getting married soon and settling down on the banks of the Wabash. I Virginia Shelby is a nurse at the present. She was planning to continue her training and become a doctor, but matrimonial whispers have been heard, and she thinks it best to be a housewife. Frankie Smith drove in the 500-mile race in 1960. He has won several races since then. He has had two wrecks, banging himself up very badly and was put in the hospital for three weeks. Now you don't know Frank when you see himg he has a different face. Freeman Smith is married to Anne Ricketts. He owns a large dairy herd and is living happily. Barr Switzer is now a mana er at General Motors. Girls he isn't married - V . . ' But Gee! It looks as though he is a confirmed Bachelor. Patsy Thomas is a nurse at Lake View Hospital in Danville, Illinois. She is being transferred to a hospital in California. Lois Waldron is now a farmer's wife. She is living in the western part of Foun- tain County with a Wonderful Guy. She is also the mother of two freckle-faced, red headed boys. Frank Wright is doing post graduate work at Purdue University. He has no particular field in mind - oops. Yes, he does too, that one field being women. Complamenff of: K. of P. ...29.. The play was an hilarious comedy centered around an English teacher, Miss Brooks, who, after planning to take a trip, was suddenly given the job of putting on the school play. Miss Brooks became more deeply involved as one complication piled onto another, which made it very humorous and true to life all the way through. I953-19511 FOOTBALL SEASON The football squad opened the season with an ominous growl that forecast a dismal future for its opponents when it overwhelmed Cayuga by a large score. The football team was under new direction from Coach Goodnight, who had instigated a new system for the Trojans. The fans were surprised to see an unbalanced line with the quarterback taking the handoff in reverse fashion on some plays. The mighty Trojans displayed a powerful running attack with Fred Rayburn and Hubert Reed hugging the ball and also some good passing from the quarterback, Morrie Goodnight. The players were much lighter than most of their opponents, but overcame this with speed and skill. The Covington Trojans had won nine games when they ran up against the red- hot Rockville team in the last game of the season. In spite of injuries to several players, the boys came from a twenty point lead by Rockville to a 39-32 score, while the ball rested on the Rockville nine yard line waiting for the Trojans to carry it across for a possible tie score, but the gun went off as time ran out and the touch- down was never made. The team had a good year and there were several players, who did a good job such as those mentioned above. They were: Albert Gritten, George Copsy, Bob Roark, Russell Lewsader, Harold McBride, Jerry Hale, George Edwards, Jim Fox, Jack Ellison, Dean Switzer, and Willard Askren. The underclassmen played a heavy schedule and won half of their games while learning the capers. Several boys showed indications of becoming valuable players in the future. This was a good year for records as some of the boys made national records and others made new records for .the school. There was a parade down town and a pep session. The student body was re leased from school to work on their floats. There were many fine floats. The evening started with a parade down town. The queens, leading the parade rode in convertibles. The parade went around the football field before the game and again at the half. The queen was crowned at the half by the football captain, Mor- ris Goodnight. Our Trojans played the Kentland Blue Devils and it was one of the most ex- citing games of the season. The score was Covington 41, Kentland 57. Following the game, the G.A.A. sponsored a Homecoming dance in the old gymnasium. 'S-ip.
