Yet graduation, perhaps to a greater degree than will ever be true again, buoys us with a sense of attainment. The feel- ing of excitement does not come from what we have accomplished, but from a realization of the possibilities within our grasp. So many roads lie ahead that itls exciting to have a choice and to know we are better prepared to assume responsibilities and perform useful tasks. The world needs us-the work of our hands. We owe the world our service in return for these boundless 1 ortunities. X J 44' ff I ,nf 1 'fi V Tw-.W U A ,gi ff ., vi 'shi' .I K ,J f rf ' - 'Q V 4 ' ' Q . Secretary and Gleda Harding, Treasurer. XVith innocence never so sweet, we, the class of '53, entering Covington High for our first year, placed ourselves trustinglv at the inercv of the upper-classmen, and with great astonishment found that we were the harassed victims of weird jokes and sarcastic jests. We harbored revenge in the depths of our hearts and upon the arrival of our junior year we relentlessly inflicted upon the new under- classmen far more abuse than we had ever suffered. Our heads were held aloft, and our manners were dignified once we reached the senior standing, which we had so long covetedg and, indifferent toward our under-classmen, we allowed ourselves the full glory of our superior rank. Now, with mixed emotions and fond memories, we view the end of our school days at CHSQ and it is our sincere hope that our under- classmens high school years prove to be as enjoyable and beneficial as ours have been. XVe the class of '53 bid farewell to our beloved Alma Mater, Covington High School. As juniors, the first thought that entered our minds as we passed through the doors of C.H.S. was that we were finally out of the woods. Not green Sophomores anymore, we gloried in the fact that we were over the hump. Now we were somebody. XVc had underclassmen to look down on and to tease. The Seniors didn't look half so big or quite so dignified as thev did before. They had even become considerate of our ideas and feelings. Now that we had attained this status, we found big responsibilities resting on us. The junior-Senior Prom was our dance, and we worked hard to make it the best. Having reached this important mile post, we realized with satisfac- tion that our Junior year could have held no more happiness. It was with a fleeting glance that we looked back at what we had accomplish- ed before we moved on to what awaited as the top class at C.H.S. This year's Covington Cougar eleven had a very slow start but finally found themselves and ended the season with 4-5 record. Starting the season as though they were not good enough for Group I. the Cougars lost to C.NI.S., Hope- well, and Danville before finally finding the victory column against a strong Fleming eleven from Vinton. The Cougars defeated XVashingron 6: Lee of Arling- ton and Andrew Lewis in rapid succession for their lst and 2nd Group I wins. Both of these games were thrillers with the Cougar backfield displaying the type of ball-handling that is not often seen in the local sport circles. The season was complete with a decisive win over the old rivals, the Clifton Forge Mountaineers, in a game that saw ten of the first eleven men play their last game for the Blue and Cold. Boodic Albert and Chesty Squires, Cougar mentors, will cer- tainly have a tough rebuilding job next season. FOCT BALL TEAM Has Hamm stops Piottenberry in his tracks after a short gain. Probably the biggest thrill of the season came with the crushing of Andrew Lewis 47-37. In play outside Group I the team's record was a boastful 9-O. Throughout the season the girls displayed excellent shooting accuracy and almost magic ball-handling Wizardry. At times the going was rough, but these stout-hearted lasses never gave up and even though behind at times, they fought until the final buzzer sounded.
