Was every act a happy one? No — as in every play — there have been many trying moments for the cast as well as for the master puppeteers. Those who have shared these experiences will never forget the knowledge and experience gained through the past scenes. This performance will always live as a part of their lives. We, the staff of PuFFS AND PATCHES, are proud to open again the curtains on this drama so that you may have a glimpse of the past. Our stage will be set through words and pictures, and it is our hope that as you turn the pages you will remember now or years later the joys, the sorrows and the pleasures of this year at C. H. S. Cyyuli Great 3ionor an Ofpplause Because of her interest in all the activities of Covington High School, her cheerful smile, and her fine personality, we have all come to love and ap- preciate Mrs. Rose Patterson Rose. Through her untiring efforts the annual and other journalism projects have be- come one of the finest features m our high school life. Because she has helped us to appreciate good work, both in scholastic and extra-curricular activities ; and has made our high school days richer, more pleasant and more profitable, we dedicate the 1952 Puffs and Patches to Mrs. Rose P. M. Tradition at C. H. S. have been going on since the start of Covington High. From the first day of school until the last, Mr. Tradition plays a lead role, not a bit part. By the time the first week of school has gone by the new students have learned at least two of the roles our star plays, namely, seniors come into assembly last while the student body stands and they leave first, and also the newcomers learn to know which steps are for “up” traffic and which for “down,” although many forget by the time they are seniors. When the first football game is played, the Cou- gars have a spectator who doesn’t pay at the gate. He IS Mr. Tradition. However, he is a very common sight because he can be seen at the pep rally every Thursday; wearing his bright red tie at the games ; reading the mes- sages of backing and spirit which are posted in con- spicious places over the buildings telling the team the school is behind them ; standing at attention while the band plays the “Star Spangled Banner” before the kick- off; or singing at the top of his voice “Onward Cougars” while the band plays and the crowd rises after one of the Cougars has plunged over for a touchdown. Mr. Tradition puts on an old red shirt and a pair of blue jeans and comes to the Sadie Hawkins dance, a yearly jamboree given by the cheerleaders. Our old trouper gets choked up when the “Little Brown Jug,” the symbol of a football victory over our bitter rivals from “Bag- dad, “City of Doom,” sometimes known as Clifton Forge, is placed in the hands of the two co-captains. This actor isn’t exclusively sportsminded. He en- joys the fun that is a habit at C. H. S. Never has the paddle been swung any harder at a Monogram initiation nor has the lipstick been put on any thicker at a sopho- more initiation than the time Mr. L M. Tradition set the standards many years ago. During the month of Novem- ber our theatrical idol pays another visit to C. H. S. when he votes in the elections held by the government “Bound for New York” classes. He also shows up at the Monogram formal when the Monogram Queen is crowned. During Decem- ber this year Mr. Tradition paid his yearly visit at the Christmas formal and was on the front row when the music department presented its program of Christmas music at assembly. This year our actor friend added another tradition because Covington High School took a big step forward in the field of state sporting events. The Cougars left the ranks of Group II and invaded the ranks of the big boys in Group I. When exams came up this year our performer changed his procedure a little. Instead of having one big exam there were two or three hourly tests. Never- theless Mr. Tradition was able to cause the excitement and cramming that has always been connected with exams. Three years ago our trusted trouper started a new sporting event. The Student Council played the faculty in basketball and helped build better relations between students and teachers. The government classes each year go either to New York or to Washington. Mr. Tradition arranges all the details and goes along. At the Junior- Senior Prom the pride of old Broadway is the guiding hand as the senior class president leads the figure. The guest appearance of Mr. Tradition always gives pleasure to the students but you can bet all the fun of high school that if he didn’t enjoy himself Mr. I. M. Tradition would never show his face in the drama at C. H. S. “The Faculty Scores ' James Lunger PLRY STUDENT COUNCIL AND FIRST AID CLUB upper Picture — first Row: Raikes, Daugherly, De Hart, Mize, Scott, M. Wilmer. The most important role given to the Council is that of interpreting and ajiplying the rules and regulations of the set. This year the Council’s main project was stressing honor to the cast. The First Aid Club is one of the most essential groups on the set. The club is always on hand to heal the cuts and bruises of the cast. The club not only helps out on the set but can be called upon for any emergency. 44 BETA CLUB AND DRAMATIC CLUB Upper Picture — Sealed: Tingler, Rice, J. The Beta Club contains our brains.” Not only is this part of our cast absorbed in books, but all of these players are most active in sports and extra-curricular activities. Leadership, achievement and character plus those good grades qualify juniors for Beta Club membership. Long may they thrive among us! This club contains our outstanding actors and actresses. I’ll never forget the day this wonderful cast put on their three one-act plays for the public. Wonderful!” “Superb!” “Bravo!” These familiar sounds still ring in my ears. What fun it is to act! 45 TRI-HI-Y AND AUDITORIUM CLUBS Clean speech, clean living, clean sportsmanship and clean thoughts — these are the things for which the Girls’ Tri-Hi- ' l strives. Not only do they hold devotions before school, but they are always ready to help a needy family, fill stockings for veterans or sell Easter lilies to help crippled children. What would any play be without a stage crew? We certainly couldn’t get along without our Auditorium Club. They do anything from supplying light bulbs to changing the scenery on our set. 1 hese boys deserve the thanks of the cast for doing so much strenuous work. The club works diligently throughout the year to show the cast how to be stars m the home and in the kitchen now, and also how to be stars in homemaking throughout life — “Future Homemakers’ they are indeed. The Public Speaking Club consists of those players who take a delight in dramatic readings, orations and monologues. The Club learns the importance of speaking correctly and in most cases the players in this club never suffer from knocking knees and a lied tongue when they speak in public. 47 DIVERSIFIED OCCUPATIONS CLUB Lower Picture — Firi,i Roio : Harris, Bunch. Smith, Crizer, Brizendine. Diversified Occupations Club consists of those who work on the set, and also have part time jobs. We are proud to have members of our cast represented in many local businesses, in which their jobs range from garage mechanic to store clerk. These hardworking souls are easily recognized by the green D. O. worn on their while sweaters. Industrious students have the advantage of school and can earn some money and learn a trade at the same time. Some students say that they wouldn’t like to work and go to school too, but “1 have to go to work!” often serves as a good alibi. 4S Upper Picture — First Row: P. Lacks, Rose, Fridley, J. That cast of fellows in room 205! one would think they were a snooty group but actually they are the most sociable group on the set. They keep our morale up by putting daily quotations on the bulletin board. The one enjoyed most was I’ll but he down and bleed awhile then I’ll rise and fight again.” This quotation was adopted as the motto for the Cougars, who lost one game and rose up to score many victories. Help those Who Need Help.” This is the motto of the Red Cross Club. One of their main projects this year was helping the Veterans in the Salem Plospital. If only you could have seen the faces of the disabled soldiers when they received the miscellaneous gifts sent by the club! SCIENCE AND BUSINESS CLUBS Step into our laboratory! Here you will see Mr. Meredith and his “little monsters” working on some wonder of science. The Science Club helps promote an interest in science and gives its members a chance to use the equipment of the school to do their experiments. For anyone interested in any field of science, the Science Club is for you. The Business Club, a new group on the set this year, received a hearty welcome from the staff. There is nothing like preparation for the business world and this club offers excellent training in the field. Upper Picture — Seated: Baber, Bowling, Iseley. THE BEST BAND IN THE LAND Every play needs music and that’s what the C. H. S. band furnishes, football games, pep rallies or assemblies, the band, loyal and willing, is always prepared to help. This year the band was present at all the football games, whether near or far. Another great honor which was bestowed upon the band was a three-day trip to the Apple Blossom Festival. OH! what fun! Leading the band were the peppy and high stepping majorettes and the drum major. One of the most spectacular feats that the majorettes performed was the tw’irling and dancing to such tunes as “Charleston,” “Little Brown Jug” and the never-to-be-forgotten “Dixie.” C ornets-Trumpets : Wallace Adcox, Arthur Kraus, Dewey O’Conner, Roy Seal, jerry Ballengee, Mack Humphries, Larry Lanum, Charles Rogers, Ronald Boswell, Claude McMillon. The choir presents arrangements of spirituals and hymns which linger on our memory long after the meeting is over. Lending harmony to the voices of the girls, the Boys’ Glee Club comes in with a deep tone of quality. Male voices on the set add variety to the performance of the music department of C. H. S. 52 GIRLS ' GLEE CLUB Depth and beauty are contributed to the play when the voices of the girls blend together, forming the background music to the production of “C. H. S. in 52.” The school year is highlighted when the Girls Glee Club, one of the most active groups on the set, give their Spring Concert, and various other performances during the year. The boys’ members are from football, basketball, baseball and track players who have won their C’s in these fields. Probably the biggest dance and the biggest picnic of the year are the ones sponsored by the Monogram Clubs. 5(1 Lower Picture: Keith, Crowder, Wilmer, Turner, Andrews, Gumm, Roach, Coleman, Bouchard, Scott. With the growth of our school came the growth of our cheerleaders for there were I 0 this year instead of 8. Those spirited Pep Rallies on the court house steps, the leading of cheers in assembly before each game, the appearance of the cheerleaders on the football field m their little red jeep — these are the things which helped lead our team to victory and kept us m a gay mood throughout the year. When thinking of this jovial group which has made the set more cheerful, one would readily say. Rah ! Rah ! Cheerleaders. 0 First Row: Gates. Humphries, Barnett, Knick, Dressier Secortd Row: Groves, Phillips, W. Squires, coach, Bussard, Baker The Cougars debut into Group I as a basketball team was a disappointment. Playing in eight con- ference games m the Western District the Cougars were unable to win a single game and ended on rock bottom m the standings. The jump from Group II to Group I was just too great for the Cougars although at times they showed signs of being a better than fair ball club. Outside the conference, however, their record was better, with six wins and three losses. Two of these victories were over Clifton Forge, the old time rivals “from down the river,” and so the season was not without joy. Coach “Chesty” Squire’s first team was composed of Walter Knick at center, Captain Roscoe Hum- phries and Russe 11 H ayslett as forwards; Ronnie Baker and “Hotdog” Dressier as guards. Next year’s team should make a better showing since there will be only two members departing from the squad and the remaining boys will have gained much valuable experience. IVe They We They E. C. The Covington High School Cougars had a very successful gridiron season during 1951 although their win- ning streak was broken at 19 games. The Cougars ran their winning streak to 19 with victories over Waynesboro, 27 to 6; Harrisonburg, 13 to 0; and G. M. S. Generals, 12 to 6. The 13th of October was an unlucky day for the Cougars, even though it wasn’t on Friday. The Cougars lost to the Glen Allen Panthers of Richmond 12 to 0. It was the Panthers way of getting revenge for the loss they suffered in 1950. This was the first time since Boodie” ’Albert became coach that the Cougars failed to score during a ball game. The Cougars came back to start a new streak with a hard fought victory over William Byrd of Vinton by a score of 20 to 19. The following week the Cougars played perhaps their best game when they won over Handley High wilh ihe score of 27 to 6. The team’s hope of another long victory string was cut short by a team called The Jefferson High Magicians, who finished with a score of 14 to 6. The final victory was the sweetest because the win over Clifton Forge by a score of 13 to 6 gave Covington High School the Little Brown Jug ” for another year and a final record for 1951 of 6 victories and 2 defeats. Any production takes money, and the business staff, by means of subscnj tions and advertisements, is able to finance our production. When praise is due it is often bestowed on the editorial staff, but our partners should share the honors, for without them the production could not be carried through. Thanks should also be given to the business men who from year to year give the an- nual their loyal support through advertisements.
