There were approximately one hundred fifty of us. We were put into three home rooms. All of the teachers we had that year have entered other fields of endeavor except Miss Kathryn Miller and Mr. Allan Barnwell who are yet faithful to us. The year beginning in September, l936, saw us advance to the classification of sophomore and then we were like i'Wednesday's child'- ufull o-f woe -because in spite of our wonderful times in Miss Browder's fMrs. Reesej class we just couldn't remember the parts of a grass- hopper s body. We also had difficulty in learning rhyme schemes which Miss Thomas so patiently tried to teach us. The highlight of our sec- ond year was marked by the spring sophomore-senior party. When we began our junior year as Thursdays children, from all indications, visitors would have thought we lacked intellectual ability but the main reason was probably some erudite additions to the faculty, But who could dislike a class taught by the jovial Mr. Richard Shrum or by the gentleman who arrived munching a banana and wearing glasses, raincoat and derby? We shall not soon forget Mr. james William Orser nor his faithful companion, Miss Frances Hamm, with her expressive brown eyes. For the Latin students demerits increased each day, until Miss Miriam lrby decided to become Mrs. Peden and 'le tres petit professeur' Mr. John S. Heretick was chosen to take her place. The crowning event of V938 was the Junior-Senior Prom which everyone enjoyed because this year the first mid-term commencement with seventeen graduates was held and we enjoyed two parties instead of one. Swiftly the summer months were gone and we, a class of eighty-four dignified members, returned to school for the highlight year of our school career. We were upset to learn that algebra and Trig were not to be taught by our math teacher of the year before, who was fast learning to become Dr. Shrum. But in some way the appearance of Mademoiselle McAllister, whom we all learned to love, made up for our loss be- cause by his paying her several visits we had them both. Mr. Alderson Propps also became a member of the faculty and with Mr. Robert Doyle, whom he assisted, the teams carried off many honors for which we shall always be proud. Covington High Schools longaawaited band was finally organized under the direction of Mr. James M. Grainger. The progress which was made compensated us for the many hours of suffering which the student body had to undergo while we listened to Mary Hada Little Lamb. Our graduation year marked the fourth publication of the renewed PUFFS AND PATCHES, our annual. The senior class was well repre- sented on the staff. Along with The Announcer staff we were made proud of the awards received on publications in the Southern lnterscholastic Press Association meeting which the staffs attended in Lexington. The trip to the New York Fair loomed largest on the horizon of the seniors and the entire class pitched in to make it possible to have a one hundred per cent attendance at the fair. Then in a short time-for four years seems a brief period-we, as fair-faced children were not lamenting but pressing still towards the future. In our last few weeks we represented the generous Friday child by trying to give to C. H. S. pleasant memories of us and by storing up happy ones to take with us. With the awarding of our commencement honors we became eighty-four 'Sabbath children -they who are fair and wise and good and gay. Now the gaiety, good times, school work and school activities are stored in our chest of most pleasant memories and we are ready to go out mlo the world working and living according to the standards which are upheld in Covington High School. The Atmosphere: Dark and gloomy. There is silenceg the Class Prophet speaks in a low voice. nl have communed with the Spirits. At last, I can see the members Of yOUl' class in 1949. A nl see an airport. There is a plane on the field. The pilot is A. Alfred taking off for a flight around the world. On the other side of the Field another plane is being made ready for a flight. It is a large transport plane manned by Allen Paxton and Charles Arrington. With them is air-hostess Helen Pfadt. Now I see the new Covington High School. Let us look in this school and see the teachers who were members of the class of 39 . Pete Loving is the instructor in lndustrial Arts. Joycelyn Spencer is teaching English. Anita Boswell is teaching commercial subjects. Jeanette Huff is the Librarian. Ralph Brackens is the head instructor in the Science department. He is assisted by Herbert Crawford. 'iThe Crystal Ball now reveals a bowling alley. A large crowd is gathered around one person. lt's Hunter Carpenter, who has just won the title of World's Bowling Champion. With him is Nancy Cox. She is the champion woman bowler of Alleghany County. Champion Carpenter is about to defend his crown against Everette Duncan. What is this l now see the crystal? lt's a large dance hall. There is a dance. The class of 39 is having a reunion. The swing band is under the direction of Arthur Ordel. A great many celebrities are attending the dance. I see Earl Rauch, the king of the stock exchange. He is accompanied by his private secretary, Lucy Bell Shawver. There is Clyde Saylor, the radio crooner. W'ith him ,is Ruth Lockard, one of the world's greatest dramatic actresses. Standing behind them is Jack Hodges and Harold Keyt. Both are professional basketball players. There is Joe Terry, the radio comedian. He is talking to Ed Libby, who is the widely known radio and newspaper commentator on foreign affairs. Walter Boerner and Bob Holloman are just entering the hall. They are athletic directors at the University of Virginia. With them are john 78 Lockhart, Kenneth Keifer, and Junior Curtis, famous scientists, who have devoted their lives to the betterment of mankind. Among the happy gatherings I see two married couples and three old maids. The married couples are Lawrence Reynolds and the former Hazel Humphries, and Billy Deacon and the former Laura Jordan. The old maids are Marjorie Ailstoclt, Helen Carter, and Elnora Curtis. The dance hall fades away and a hospital comes into view. l see the operating room where an operation is being performed. The doctor is Billy Hudson. He is assisted by nurses Margaret Burns, Mary Frances Hite, and Helen McDonald. The Crystal Ball now reveals a pool room. A game is being played between Henry Rhodes and a pool sharlc. I fear the sharlc will be defeated. Henry owns the pool room and has been very successful with it for several years. As my mind goes deeper into the fourth dimension, I see a night club. It is owned and operated by Frank Boerner. Frank has moved to Callahan where his club is located. He says that by living there he can combine business and pleasure. With this last prophetic observation the crystal ball clouds and remains dark. The voice of the prophet ceases for a moment and then he spealcs again: That will be one dollar. Put it in the dish on the table as you go out. JACK Lzarrci-r, Class Prophet. 79 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the departing Seniors of C. I-I.
