JAMES G. JETER August 13, 1861 January 22, 1938 Principal Covington Schools, 1892-1910 Division Superintendent, Alleghany County Schools, 1910-1933 BETTY l3Al.l.ElXlGEE September 21, 1923 November 23, 1937 ' Entered Covington High School, September, 1935 O HELEN MYERS October 27, 1920 December 11, 1937 Entered Covington High School, February, 1936 I ERNEST LAWRENCE SMITH, JR, October 28, 1923 March 20, 1938 Entered Covington High School, February, 1937 A 8 CLASSES CLASS HISTORY N September, I934, the class of '38 set out on an extended camera survey of high school life. The main part of our survey was in the Museum of Knowl- edge. As we entered its doors, we were given Opportunity Cameras with a four-year exposure and a roll of Mental Film for each subject we intended to photograph. The first year of exposure resulted in a jumbled collection of pictures, and a.i,I look through my album, the first picture I see is one that now is treasured above all others, that of Mr. Curfman. On the faculty pages, several changes have been made, but our pictures still remain clear and unblurred. Here is a picture of a sign post saying Failure on one side and Success on the other. That must be Vocational Guidance. Next to it is a picture framed in X'sg that's Algebra. What on earth is this picture? Oh! I remember now. We dropped some acid on it in the Science room but you can still see the test tubes and Miss Thomas. Ah, here is one of Miss Van Lear-I mean Mrs. Curfman-who taught us English. Surely this picture of Treasure Island was not taken by us, but I remember now that we went there with our cameras on a Literature excursion. Here's a whole page of blurred pictures-must have been from overexposure. It says Sophomore Year at the top of the page. That was the year our heads were so big we couldn't focus the camera correctly. Some of us even dropped our cameras, as well as I remember. I-lere's a lovely picture. on the next page, named Shadow and Substance. It's the junior-Senior Prom, of course. The year I937-38 marked the culmination of our tour. That year was to be the year that we were to take the best pictures, for by then we should have learned how to use our cameras and how to select the right subjects. We evidently proved this well because these last few pages of my album are filled with pictures. There's one of our superintendent, Mr. Bennett, who came to Covington the year we were seniors. All these pictures of trophies certainly show our athletic prowess. Memory shots of our parties and social gatherings will not be affected by the years because a special kind of Personality Developer was used in printing the pictures. The final fixing bath for all our pictures was commencement. At the gradua- tion exercises, we were given new Life Cameras and the equipment to develop our films correctly and at the right time. The faculty threw light on the subject, gave us new cameras, and sent us out on an even more extensive survey in the Museum of Time. JANE SITES. THIRTY-EIGHT LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT E, the dignified members of Covington High School, the graduating class of the City of Covington and the Commonwealth of Virginia, in this year of?Our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and thirty-eight, being in good mental condition as usual and in much better temper than usual, do hereby write and publish this Last Will and Testament as a memoir to the faculty and the student body of C. H. S. in years to come. . Item I. To Captain Walter R. Curfman, our principal, we bequeath a sense of relief that we have at last been graduated, pleasant memories of our four years together, and a feeling of pride in any great deeds or noteworthy achievements that the future may disclose, realizing that such glories, if any, will reflect much of his fine example and counsel. Item II. To our superintendent, Mr. A. L.. Bennett, we leave the full supervision of the schools of Alleghany County, and all our powers of seeing through stone walls, in order to save the legatee from future serious disasterg and because it is evident that said legatee is expected by the community at large to possess this gift. if Item Ill. To the gentlemen of the school board, we leave a simple satisfaction that the controversy over the new school building in East Covington has been settled, we trust, satisfac- torily. ' Item IV. To the Senior class of next year, we bequeath our feeling of superiority, and well-known nerve which th will probably need next year. Item V. To the junio?class, we leave our good luck. It made us what we are today and it should satisfy them. Item VI. To our good friends, the Sophomores, we leave our patience. It will be found useful as the only means by which they can endure the juniors. Item VII. To the young and unsophisticated Freshmen, we leave a map of the school building their respective classrooms. ' Item V711. To Miss Maude Mahaney, we leave a Senior class which will perhaps shatter all previous records and have more than 95 per cent attendance for at least one month. Item IX. To Miss Helen Thomas, we do will and bequeath a Literature class which she may convince once and for all that Shakespeare's Hamlet is actually a tragedy, even though it may forever remain a mystery to some. Item X. To Mr. Allan Barnwell, we leave a Chemistry class which will be convinced that H20 and HOH are one and the same. Item Xl. To Coaches Carmack and Doyle, we leave a group of strong boys with the paramount idea of winning from Clifton Forge on Turkey Day. Item XII. To the football squad of next year, we do will and bequeath the privilege of gazing admiringly on the stately group of trophies won by our team this year. Item XIII. To Mr. George Lewis, our janitor, we leave an able assistant and a greater and more refined knowledge of international politics. Item XIV. To the Senior class president of next year, we leave full possession of our executive capacity which has been greatly admired and coveted. 29 Item XV. To Bobby Holloman we leave Pee Wee Sizer's athletic ability, providing he stays eligible. Item XVI. To Harold Keyt, No. l sucker of C. H. S., we leave Billy Coflman's good looks, which he can probably use. Item XVII. To Thelka Campbell, we do will and bequeath Jackie Sites' control over the stronger sex. Item XVIII. To Frank Gilbert, we Item XIX. To Fred Allison, we do Item XX. To Kress Meeks, we being late for school. V Item XXI. To Sonny Phillips, we for keeping the class in an uproar. Item XXII. To our dear old school building itself, we leave the peaceful quiet, apple cores, wads of gum and crumpled notes which we may have left behind. ln witness whereof, we, the Class of 1938, the testators, have to this our Last Will and Testament, set our hand and seal this thirtieth day of May.
