The Buccs were led by a group of seniors who dedi- cated themselves to winning. The com- munity and school will always remem- ber the ’85 season as a year of high- lights. The Buccs recorded “key” victo- ries over rivals Bradford, Miami East, and Tipp City. In the playoffs, the Cov- ington squad defeated Southeastern in the first round and in the Region 20 Championship played one of the finest defensive games in Covington history defeating Fenwick, 3-0. Losing to Del- phos Jefferson in the State Semi-Finals did not over-shadow the outstanding performance of the 1985 Buccaneers. 79 w The 1985-86 girls’ volleyball team finished the season with a 9-11 record and a 3rd place finish in the league. The four seniors, Denise Pearson, Renee Buckingham, Kathy Christian, and Leanne Byers contributed greatly to the successes of this squad. The MVP was Renee who was also voted 1st team SRC and 2nd team District 9. The coaches award went to Kathy Christian while Leanne Byers received 2nd team all- league. Cross Country This year’s Bucc cross country team began the year as a question mark. The team performance would be dictated by the individual performances of mainly Freshmen and Sophomores. The year started off with a championship at John Bryan State Park and continued to be one full of many successes. The team was ranked in the top ten of the state during the season and finished with a record of 9M3. Led by the fine leadership of Seniors Jim Cook, Doug Root, and Chris Colbert, the team never finished worse than fourth in a meet and reached the Regional meet for the first time in 10 years and came within two points of being the first Bucc cross country team to reach the State meet in 15 years. Other highlights included a 2nd place finish in the SRC, a regional meet. The team also captured two Invitational championships and 3 Invitational runner-ups. Along with the success of the team, the year was highlighted by the individual performance of Freshman Ryan Stover. Ryan finished 3rd in the SRC and 4th in the district. He was one of only four regional champions in the state of Ohio and finished 7th in the state meet at Columbus which placed him on the All-State First Team. It is an honor to be associated with such fine people, especially the seniors who dedicated themselves to being part of a winning program. Both the varsity and reserve took home a spirit stick from the camp. In the fall they placed 3rd in the Bradford Pumpkin Show and 2nd in a competi- tion at the Piqua East Mall. The Covington High School varsity basketball team finished the year with a 17 5 record. During the season many highlights occurred. A big win over St. Henry, ranking in the state polls, and being top-ranked in the Journal Herald were just a few. Not only did the season conclude the ca reers of nine seniors but Bob Huels- man finished his coaching at Coving- ton retiring after 13 years. Coach Huelsman finished his career with a 228-68 record. Butch Boehringer and Jerrod Miller were voted to the first team SRC with Lane Evans and Mike Laughman receiving honorable men- tion. 93 Girl’s Basketball Despite being a rebuilding year, the girls varsity basketball team finished with a fine 7 13 record. The year was marked with many highlights. The first was a 3rd place finish in the tough SRC. Playing two teams who made it to the state finals will also be memorable for the girls. This team had no star, but consisted of 8 people who were dedicated to team' success Each player had a role to play which contributed to our success. Many times we were out manned both physically and talent wise. The trait that kept us in many games in these situations was the girls' constant hustle and desire to play the best they could. As a coach. I am very proud of the attitudes of the team members and their ability to cast aside individual achievement for the success of the team. Senior tricaptains Jennifer Garber. Leanne Byers and Denise Pearson contributed the leadership which was very vital to our success. Individual highlights include Leanne Byers being selected to the first team SRC. Denise Pearson and Melinda Kuntz received honorable mention honors. Jill Emmert led the team in rebounds and Denise Pearson received the award for best free throw percentages. Denise Pearson also capped off a fine four year career by being named outstanding player I am very honored to be associated with not only fine basketball players but fine people.
