Whether it be a winning athletic team, a spirit day, or an academic activity, pride is throughout the hallways of the high school. Without pride, Covington would not be the great place it is. Pride in the achieve- ments, in whatever field, has made Covington High School a place where students and teachers enjoy their work and activities. Opening 3 SPIRIT 4 Opening Through the years we at Covington High School have built up a tradition of school spirit. This spirit is not only shown during sport functions but also experienced during Halloween and Christmas. As we pass through the doors of CHS we take with us the pride of having the enthusiasm and spirit which has allowed us to be one step above the rest. Opening 5 ACTION 6 Opening There is activity and action happening everywhere we look at Covington High School, whether it be in the gym at noon, in the typing room during a class or on Friday nights at a basketball game. These activities are a characteristic of our school and allows each one of its students to become individually involved in the school. Opening 7 8 Opening Leadership at CHS takes many forms, whether it be as a president of a club, as a teacher, or as a captain of a sport. Each student contains, to a certain degree, a quality of leadership and responsibility. These elements contribute a certain quality to our school and its students. It also adds to our feeling of pride in ourselves, in our school, and in our community. Opening 9 EVENTS 10 Opening During this year many events will take place. These occasions include homecoming, the class play, basketball games and many more. Each one of these events touch our lives in different ways and in different degrees, but these happenings allow us to become involved with the school and to show our pride in ourselves to other people. Opening 11 TALENT 12 0pening Everybody at Covington High School has talent. These abilities are shown at different times and at different events and vary between typing, playing a sport, or being able to measure an object on a scale. Each individual contributes a talent to CHS, which allows our school to be versatile not only in sports, but also in academics and every- day school life. Opening 13 pride in FRIENDS Friendship is very valuable during a person’s life, whether it be a best friend or a boyfriend or girlfriend. As we remember the good times and the bad, memories of our friends will arise. For many years to come these memories will call to mind the pride we felt as we “hung around” with our friends. Many new ideas and costumes were presented to the school. Some examples, such as a McDonald’s sign and a pair of eyeballs, showed how much hard work the students put into their outfits. This spirit day provided a break from the normal school day and allowed the students to enjoy themselves. The Student Council held the traditional hall decorating for Christmas the week of December 13-19. As last year, the Seniors decorated the front hall, the Juniors had the study hall, the Sophomores prepared the west hall, and the Freshmen decorated the east hall. Many long hours were spent by each class in trying to finish their respective areas during the assigned times. After the votes were tallied, the Juniors received 1st place, the Sophomores 2nd place, the Seniors 3rd place, and the Freshmen received 4th place. 30 Christmas Christmas «'I' ? . !' An improved defensive effort gave us the chance to win and to keep ourselves in the ballgame. A total of 8 points in the league and 14 points for the season was the differ- ence between winning and losing. This year’s ball club played as a team and always gave their best effort. The team finished with a 4-4-2 record. A - m vl Managers: Marshall Heath And Jeff Longendelpher Football 57 The varsity volleyball team had a very successful season, capturing a share of the SRC league title and ending with a 15-6 overall record. This success was due to the excellent teamwork and 100% hustle displayed by each player throughout the season. Congratulations to Renee Buckingham who was selected to the 1st team All-SRC, Gina Thomas 2nd team All-SRC, and Shanda Kimmel and Nikki Johnson who both received Honorable Mention. Varsity: First row: Mrs. Lakes — Morman. Second row: Julia Huelsman, Renee Buckingham, Kathy Christian, Jennifer Garber, Leanne Byers, Denise Pearson. The 1984 Covington golf team had a rather disappointing season, record-wise, as they won just 2 of 18 matches. A positive note on the season was that all golfers showed great improvement as the season progressed. All of this year’s team members were underclassmen and will be returning next year. Tim Harter was this year’s medalist with a 47.8 stroke average. 60 Golf Cross Country This year’s cross country team was very successful, not only in terms of wins and losses but also in terms of attitude, desire, and willingness to give 100% at all times. Led by an excellent corps of seniors, Scott Fisher, Bryan Musgrave, Keith Wilkop, and Jim Shield: the team finished with a 52-36 record. First row: Chris Colbert, Rusty Thompson, George Wise, Jim Cook, and John Polhamus. Last row: Mr. Meyer, Scott Fisher, Bryan Musgrave, Jim Shields, and Keith Wilkop. Girls’ Team: Lisa Manning and Jill Emmert. Cross Country 61 Cheerleaders This year’s cheerleaders provided a lot of spirit for many school events. Long hours of hard work and concen- tration were spent not only learning new cheers and routines but also per- fecting them to the finest detail. These extra practices helped the crowd to become more involved at the games and the team to perform better. Reserve: Bottom row: Cindy Hand, Diana Davis, Lisa Kenworthy. Wrestling The wrestling team turned in another successful season this year by winning the district for the 3rd straight year and by sending a team member, Rodney Kimmel, to the State Wrestling Tournament. Plagued by a few injuries, the team had to rely on their back-up wrestlers. This allowed many new wrestlers to improve and gain experience throughout the year. Wrestling 65 Kneeling: Mr. Huelsman. Standing: Jim Stickley, Jerrod Miller, Matt Pond, Scott McDade, Scott Williams, Mike Laughman, Lane Evans, Butch Boehringer, Mike Alexander, Kurt Locker, Doug Root, and Jim Cook. Senior and Captain this year was Scott McDade. 66 Boys’ Varsity Basketball Varsity The 1984-85 Covington basketball team finished the season at 15-8. I really felt good about winning 15 games, defending our Miami County Holiday Tournament Championship, and making it to the finals of sectional tournament play. Because the team was made up of mostly juniors, it leads us to believe that another successful season lies ahead. The one thing that sticks out in my mind, in regards to everyone on this year’s team, is that they were such a joy to be around. They were fun-loving kids with a great deal of desire to succeed! Boys’ Varsity Basketball 67 Reserve The 1984-85 reserve basketball team was an interesting team to coach. A blend of freshman, sophomores, and juniors, the group played excellent basketball compiling an 18-2 record. Though inconsistent in its play at times, the reserves were undefeated on the road while losing only to Miami East and SCC. The disappointing loss to Miami East in the finals of the Holiday Tournament was eased with many ‘‘big wins” the team earned. This team was enjoyable in the sense that they worked hard every game and achieved more than anyone anticipated. Kneeling: Mr. Fisher. Standing: Rick Seman, Jim Cook, Bill Miller, Scott Alexander, Rob Stollmer, Mike Laughman, Lane Evans, Scott Williams, Mike Alexander, Bruce Martin, Doug Root, and Larry Spurgeon. Captains this year were Doug Root and Lane Evans. 68 Boys’ Reserve Basketball Freshmen The Freshmen basketball team finished the 1984-85 season with a 5-9 record. Although we did not have a winning record, the team was in- volved in many close games and played hard in each one. Each team member worked extremely hard both in practice and in games, putting the team ahead of themselves. As a coach, I am extremely proud of this. First row: Kyle Kenworthy, Tab Brinkman, Gary Green, Bart Weer, Scott Clark, and Matt Root. Last row: Mr. Meyer, Steve Sink, Paul McGillivray, Matt Ryan, Randy Hartman, and Heath Finfrock. Last row: Jennifer Garber, Dinean Runyan, Jenny Hardenbrook, Julie Elsass, and Julia Huelsman. Seniors: Left to right: Jenny Hardenbrook and Nikki Johnson. Jenny was also this year’s captain. 70 Girls’ Basketball Girls Basketball This year’s team was very young and inexperienced on the varsity level. I hope this year will help them gain confidence in themselves and in the team the upcoming seasons. They must play a lot of basketball in the off season if they hope to achieve their goals. They finished their season with a 7-14 record. In closing, congratulations goes out to Jenny Hardenbrook for being named first team All SRC, the District 9 All-Star Team and the News Media All-Star Team. Also congratulations to Denise Pearsonm who was named honorable mention All SRC. Reserve: Kneeling: Heather Stover, Karmyn Clark, Maureen Miller, Robyn Martin, and Tanya Baker. Eric Collins was absent. 72 Baseball Baseball This year, the baseball team had a rebuilding season. With only 4 seniors, next year should be an optimistically good season. The team finished with a 4-17 record but defeated this year’s state runner-up, Fort Loramie, in the middle of the season. Jim Cook was the MVP and senior Eric Collins led the team in hitting. Also, Jim Stickley and Matt Pond both received Co-Coach’s awards. Two individuals and a relay team qualified for regionals. They were Scott McDade in the high jump, Scott Fisher in the 3200 meter run, and the 3200 meter relay team, consisting of Mike Alexander, Scott McDade, John Polhamus, and Scott Fisher. Market St. • Troy, Ohio 45373 • (513) 339-2681 Editor’s Letter As editor of the 38th volume of the Buccaneer, I would like to thank many people who have helped me throughout this year. Foremost, I would like to thank Mr. Steve Fisher, my advisor, for sticking up to Charlie, allowing me to bankrupt the yearbook budget, and all the little (and big) things that he has done. I would also like to thank Michelle Crowell, my assistant editor (Good Luck next year), Jenny Hardenbrook, Christine Colby, Denise Pearson, my photographers, Mr. Underwood, and all of my staff. Thank you once again and believe me, the “Buccaneer Pride” is in each and every one of you. Katherine Ann Christian Editor’s Letter 151 Joy to you and gladness, And that your soul may be As far away from sadness As the Star was from the sea When the Sheep-Boy, the Sheep-Boy, Heard Heaven’s melody. Smiles to you and laughter, And also that you may Be merry the morning after On good St. Stephen’s Day When the Wren-Boy, the Wren-Boy Shall sing his roundelay. Joy to you and gladness, And that the midnight bell May ring away the sadness From the stricken Old Year’s knell When the Chimes-Boy, the Chimes-Boy, Strikes “Welcome” and “Farewell.” 152 Closing
