From that point on our team began to improve each week. The momentum grew until the Versailles game when the Buccs played one of the best defensive games ever played by a Covington football team Not only did the victory give us a good chance to win the Three Rivers Conference and vault us into the number one spot in the Computer Ratings; it also avenged the 1978 loss to the Tigers After the Versailles game the team leveled off, playing excel- lent football and winning the rest of the regular season games. Then came the State semi-final play-offs. The Tiffin Calvert game was the best game of the year for the Buccs. Then on to Akron and the State Finals, where we had a double overtime loss to Mogadore. Even in losing, the team and coaches felt a sense of satisfaction because they knew they had played their best. It really started on Thanksgiving morning, November 22, 1979, with a short practice at CHS, then back home for Thanks- giving dinner and back at 4:00 p.m. for the long bus ride to Akron. In Piqua the bus broke down and after a long delay, we were once again Akron-bound. On Friday, the day of the big game, the bus ride from the hotel to the Rubber Bowl seemed unending. The ten- sion that had already started, con- tinued to build. Once inside the Rubber Bowl, the team received their astroturf shoes and soon were out on the field for the pre- game warm-up. Finally came the kick-off. The rest is a blurred mem- ory. It is still hard to believe that Covington High School played the longest football game ever played in Ohio, losing in double over- time. Even in losing there was a sense of pride, knowing that in the gym at the high school were ban- ners proclaiming us Three Rivers Conference Champs, Region 9 Champs, and State Runner-Up. The day is gone but the memories live on. A WORD FROM THE COACH This was a rebuilding year for both teams. The level of skills were low and it took most of the season to improve them. The Varsity vol- leyball team finished with a 4-12 record. The high point of the sea- son was the District tournament. The girls played very well and stayed close to the District Cham- pions Dayton Christian. The team did well against all non-league competition and despite finishing at the bot- tom of the league standings, the team did score well in most league matches. As a team our finishes in bigger meets began to go up. We are still a young team. This year we had 4 sophomores and 3 freshmen. We also have a fine group of 8th grad- ers moving up. With this talent I look for the cross-country team to improve a great deal more next year. Our record would indicate our season was not very successful, but from our standpoint of overall team spirit, desire, cooperation and under- standing, we had a very successful season. Each team member can be very proud of their accomplish- ments as I am of each and every one of them. May the future hold much success for such a super group of young women. What is learned today can be applied tomorrow to be even more successful. Mr. Gary Carder Varsity Coach A WORD FROM THE COACH The Reserve Girls Basketball team had many good games in the 1979-80 season. Our record could have been better but we had a good time and enjoyed the team- work and friendships throughout the season. The overall team average was just .224 and wo could only average 2 runs a game I was pleased with our progress and I am very proud to have worked with a team who kept after it. Winning is important in high school athletics but I feel this year we gained valu- able experience in team play, self respect, and above all, that it takes hard work to be a winner. Some of the girls spent a lot of time making signs at home to help build school spirit. Their efforts were frequently complimented by cheerleaders and fans from other schools. A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR This Chorus is slightly larger than last year's which is a very encouraging sign. This shows that there are students within the school who are interested in vocal performing. Although these stu- dents' talents are limited in respect with their music reading abilities, they are very willing to learn. If the chorus program continues to grow as it has in the past two years I see no reason why it cannot be a very fine organization within the very near future. Mrs. Alice Caldwell Yearbook Advisor NEWSPAPER STAFF (picture on page 68) The goal of the Buccanews is to report to the students the achieve- ments of individual students and events within the school. Reviving the newspaper was based upon an idea that the students of the school have a right to know about these things. I feel that the Bucca- news can become a primary source of entertainment and knowledge in the Covington schools. One accomplishment I feel is an important step in the progress of the Buccanews is the publishing of y i page per month in the Piqua Daily Call. MR. STEVEN FISHER NEWSPAPER ADVISOR Mr. and Mrs. Fisher and daughter Amy This 1980 Yearbook has captured and recorded many excit- ing and memorable events dur- ing the 1979- 80 school year. I want to congratulate the year- book advisor, editor, and staff for their time and effort in producing this excellent yearbook. Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1980. ROBERT L. DURNELL PRINCIPAL YEARBOOK STAFF (picture on page 68) Missy Perrine, Editor and Kelli Clark, Ass't. Editor have very capably layed out the pages for the 1980 year- book. They worked each day compil- ing articles, pictures, and layouts so that all deadlines were made on time. They had excellent support from the Ad Staff of eight students under the leadership of Carolyn Warner, Busi- ness Manager. I believe this yearbook is a good book with pictures and writeups tell- ing of the things that happened here at C.H.S. this school year. This yearbook will especially be remem- bered as the first Covington year- book to feature all the Seniors in color. We want to thank the entire school, students and teachers, for their support during the year and Mr. Durnell for all his cooperation and support on those days we needed him and his advice. MRS. ALICE CALDWELL Trees and shrubs donated by Class of 80 I .;V'. •-V • « 1 • • •. • k I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me with these things this year. I'd especially like to thank my Assistant Editor — Kelli Clark and wish her the best of luck next year, Mrs. Caldwell my advisor, and Mr. Shoe- maker who was here every time we needed him. I'd also like to wish the Seniors of 1980 much luck and happi- ness in the future. Missy Perrine — Editor
