It was a week of hard work but mostly a week of fun. The tradition of Freshman initiation was carried out very well by the Seniors. They were all entertained by some of the very daring challenges the Freshmen were put up to. The band also performed a show for the parents Friday night that included the songs from “WEST SIDE STORY. The season record was very good — Co- league CHAMPS with Versailles, second in the Southwestern Dis- 38 trict. and an overall record of ntne wins and one loss While records and league championships are important and impressive and all teams work toward them, there are immeasurable qualities of a team that often go unnoticed and unpublicized These qualities are teamwork, attitude, and willing- ness to put team welfare before personal gam The 1978 football team should be remembered for their outstanding team effort and for the many individuals who did make personal sacrifices so that the team would benefit I would like to personally thank the seniors of the 1978 football team They will be missed by everyone Good luck. We are very proud of this record, along with many other accomplishments registered by this team. They managed to win the Miami County Holiday Tournament for the fourth time in six years, cap- tured the Three Rivers Conference Championship with a 6-0 league record, was voted the number one seed in the Dayton District Tourna- ment. won the sectional title, and finished the season as the District Runner-Up. The team strength was provided by the upperclassmen while a strong freshmen class pro- vided some depth. The team had good balance with individuals capa- ble of scoring points in nearly all the events in the invitational meets. Our season dual meet record was a very poor 3-6, but we did finish in the top ' 3 in all the invitational meets. The highlights of the season were a second place finish in our own Covington Invitational, the new school records in the 440 relay and the 300 meter low hurdles, and the many personal best times and dis- tances set by the team members. — Coach Ron Schultz VARSITY WE THEY WE THEY Arcanum 6 3 Arcanum 0 11 Tipp City 4 5 s.c.c. 8 7 Tri Village 14 4 Minster 6 3 Newton 2 4 Miami East 1 11 Lehman 11 9 New Bremen 9 4 Versailles 3 12 Graham 4 7 Franklin Monroe 2 8 Indian Lake 0 6 Milton Union 0 13 Russia 5 7 Bethel 9 11 League Record 2-4 Overall Record 6-11 T jsxandefi N'r- .Williams Y, mckett. The students at CHS are courteous, polite and overall friendly As the day progressed everyone participated in their chosen activity Choices were volleyball, softball, checkers, chess, jarts. and numerous other activities There was an excellent band playing outside the school The band consisted of current students and alumni At no time during the day did I witness any sort of discipline problem or need for close supervision What I'm trying to say is that in this day when some of us old folks look on our youth with critical eyes there is one place where the young people show respect for their elders, teachers and freedoms It was obvious to me that the faculty at Cov- ington High School is doing a fine job with a good group of young Americans The faculty's relationship with the stu- dents is a credit to the students, their par- 54 ents and the Covington community as a ______whole Keep it up Buccs111__________________ 56 A WORD FROM THE COACH The volleyball program is in a developing stage. Next year we will be looking forward to getting more girls that were in the Jr. High program. It is evident that the Jr. High program is strength- ening our program, because some of the freshman girls were used on the varsity team this year. If we are to improve, we need more girls who are willing to work hard, take the game seriously and make volleyball their first pri- ority. 58' FRONT ROW: Gretchen Reck. Lori Ryan. The staff are considerate and good working students and I am very proud of them. They have incor- porated many new and different touches to the book this year. The Senior pictures in oval form, Senior wills, and the Senior baby pictures are just a part of the “Buccaneer 1979.” I believe that the music theme they chose of “song titles and groups is a good theme and they have had a fun time with it and are hoping that the student body enjoys it. Putting a yearbook together takes the entire school year and I really believe this is true dedication to a school tradition. A WORD FROM THE ADVISOR The art club is open to any student enrolled in art or any student who has completeo at least one year of art. The art club fills poster orders, sponsors the spring art show, takes a field trip, has a raffle, and does various art jobs needed around the school, ending the year with a picnic in May. — Mrs. Jane Gildow FRONT ROW: Andrea Gessner. Several projects are planned to make money. 82 A WORD FROM THE ADVISOR Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are eligible, based on grade point average. Sophomores must have a grade point average of 3.5; Juniors 3.3; and Seniors 3.0 to qualify for faculty ballot. Then, each eligible student is voted on by the faculty in the areas of character, leadership, and service. Those whose averages are such that permit them to be elected into the NHS membership are then inducted in a formal school-wide assembly in the Spring. It is quite an honor to be inducted into membership in the National Honor Society, since not only must members have excellent grades; they must also have high marks in the eyes of the faculty which votes on them.
