THE BUZZARD OF '78 There was another winter sport played by everyone this year. It was called ‘digging oneself out.' Janu- ary 26 hosted the worst blizzard of the century. When all that new snow accumulated on top of the 21 already on the ground, people had fun digging out the front door, building tunnels to their car, and zooming to work at a rate of 2 feet per 3 hours and 29 minutes. Several people lost some weight on the “not a crumb in the house diet. The south end of town saved energy by turning off their electric- ity for a few hours during the bliz- zard. By the third day, kids were crying to go away, but not as loudly as their mothers, who were half bald by this time. But remember: it’s not whether you win or lose; it’s whether you’re still alive in spring. 19
