1971 BUOCANkEE, OCMMSrONJ HIGH SCHOOL CCMNGTON, OHIO VOUJ UEXWV CONTENTS SENIORS.......................7 JUNIORS......................39 SOPMO UORES..................S3 FRESW WEN....................59 SCHOOL.......................6S ADMINISTRATION..............125 ADVERTISEMENTS..............135 FOREWORD The pathways through high school are memorable ones. We hope that through this book we have portrayed a span of these pathways to the future upon which each of us have traveled. Education is in itself a wide and heavily traveled pathway. There are many forks in this pathway -- each leading to some goal set by those who are traveling upon it. Just as some roads are unpaved, so are some pathways to success unpaved. There are many rough and threatening sections. However, if the goal is kept in mind, all difficulties can be surmounted, and the pathway will have served its purpose of furnishing a means of gui- dance. Along our journey our faculty and parents serve as guidepost. We are proud of them. Without them our trek would be futile. With all this in mind and putting our hard work down as pleasant memories, we present to you the 1971 BUCCANEER. Carol Sink EDITOR-IN-CHIEF 2 DEDICATION UICQ DORIS TROST It is an honor to pay tribute to one who has be- come such a genuine part of Covington High School. Her interests in her students and her eagerness to help them have endeared her to all who have come under influence. Because she means so much to so many. We dedicate the 1971 BUCCANEER to Miss Doris Trost. Miss Trost received her BA at Manchester Col- lege, Indiana and came to CHS in the fall of 1963 to teach classes in French and Speech. Besides her classes, Miss Trost is kept very busy by being Dean of Girls. She is advisor of T. N. T., Tri-Hi-Y and Student Council and is director of Jr. and Sr. Class Plays. Miss Trost has been more than a teacher, a friend besides. 3 4 achve SENIORS KATHRYN KAY ADAMS Scholarship Team 9; Jr. and Sr. Class Play Crews; G.A.A. 9,10,11,12; Tri-Hi-Y 11, 12; T.N.T. 10,11,12; Buccanews 10,11,12; Marching and Concert Band 9; Yearbook 11, 12; Office Asst. 11,12; Powder Puff 11,12 KEITH ALLEN ANGLE Jr. and Sr. Class Play Crews; F.F.A. 9,10 - Sec.,11,12; Hi-Y 10,12 SCOTT EUGENE AUKERMAN Asst, in Basic Woods JOHN BURTON BAGWELL Sr. Class Play Crew; Science Club 12 s VICTORIA LOU BASHORE DOUGLAS LIVINGSTON BLANKENSHIP Jr. Class Play Crew; Sr. Class Play Cast; Student Manager 10; Cross Country 10,11; Hi-Y 10,11,12; Key Club 12 GERALD NEIL BOGGES Basketball 11,12; Cross Country 11; Key Club 12; Band 11; Homecoming Escort 12; Friendliest 12 BEVERLY ANN BOGGS Student Council 11; Jr. and Sr. Class Play Casts; G.A.A. 9,10,11,12 - Pres.; Tri-Hi-Y 10,11,12; T.N.T. 10,11,12; Honor Society 12; Marching, Concert and Pep Bands 9,10; Girl's Glee Club 10; Chorus 9,11,12; Powder Puff 10,11,12; Speech Aid 12 DEBORAH KAY BRANT Science Club 10,11; Chorus 9,10,11,12 DEBORAH KAY BRINKMAN Student Council 9,10,12 - Vice Pres.; Jr. and Sr. Class Play Casts; Cheerleader 9,10, 11,12; G.A.A. 10; Tri-Hi-Y 10,11,12; ’ F.N.A. 11,12; T.N.T. 11; Honor Society 12; Marching and Concert Bands 9; Chorus 10,11; Powder Puff 10,11,12; Buccanews 12; Homecoming Court 12; Rossburg Candidate 12; Pumpkin Show Candidate 12; Most Popular 12 i DARRELL EUGENE CLARK Student Council 12; Jr. Play Cast; Scholar- ship Team 9; Football 9,10,11,12; Basket- ball 9; Track 10,12; Baseball 9,11; Science Club 9,10,11,12; Hi-Y 9,10,11,12; Varsity C 9,10,11,12; Marching, Pep and Concert Bands 9,10,11,12; Chorus 9,10,11,12; Most Musical 12 LINDA SUE CRIST Class Officer 12; Jr. and Sr. Play Crews; Scholarship Team 9,10,11,12; Science Club 10,11 - Pres. ,12; G.A.A. 10-11 - Rep.,12 -Treas.; F.N.A. 10,11,12; Honor Society 11,12 - Pres.; Buccanews 12; Girls’ State 11; Track Stat. 10; Librarian 11,12; Sec. But what I found during the five months I spent in Covington is much more than I expected. I spent one of the happiest periods of my life here. For this, thank you.” MAY 23, 1971 The one-hundred-second annual Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises were again combined this year at Covington High School. Eighty-four seniors, the largest to ever graduate from CHS, marched in to Pomp and Circumstance played by Miss Helen Holfinger. Miss Barbara Williams was the pianist. The Rev. Frank Gready gave the invocation while the audience stood. Joy Mengers then gave her salutatory speech entitled Our Welcome. This was followed by the Girls' Ensemble singing He. The Baccalaureate Address was given by the Rev. Gerhardt Mengers followed by the Mixed Ensemble that sang T Believe. Linda Crist, the valedictorian, then gave her address entitled Peace - The Right Direction. Let There Be Peace on Earth, the class song, was sung by the class. Mr. Blair Irvin, principal, presented the class of 1971. Diplomas were then presented by Lowell Yingst. The class sang their last song together, the Alma Mater and Benediction was given by the Rev. Frank Gready. As the class marched from the stage for the last time, each one received their class flower, the white daisy. 1. Our strong band can ne'er be broken Form’d at Covington High. This year the G.A.A. again came alive and the girls participated in many activi- ties. The year started with the annual chili supper. The girls took a long walk through the country then ate at the park. After supper they held initiation. During the year the girls organized volleyball teams and played against other schools. They played intramural basketball games and began a yoga program. They also renewed the track program in the spring. To make money and help the athletic department, the girls served the track men their meals and ran the concession stand at the Covington Invitational Track Meet. With this money the girls purchased track sweats and plan to buy an events board. FIRST ROW: R. Asher, J. Batdorf, D. Schwartz, J. Cavender, T. Boggs, D. Clark, M. Wise, T. Badgley, M. Rogers. Many think of it as a Marathon, to run and run for no accomplishment at all. This is not so for the sport participants at C.H.S.. Those who went out for it put just as much work in it as those of any other sport. These boys should be very highly congratulated because it takes will power to be able to run so far.1 One boy who put a lot of work into this sport was Ron Leach or Roadrunner, he participated and accomplished a great deal and it proved to be worth while because Ron became one of the best runners in the state. His work proved how much he truly cared. Coach Bollenbacher reminisces the great memories of Cross Country 1971. 81 SPORTS CANDfOS . TUB BUCCANEER, BAND The Covington High School Band started the year off with the usual summer marching at various events. In August came band camp at Bluffton College, Bluffton, Ohio. At the beginning of the week the band acquired its new director, Mr. Stanley Hindmarch. The band made it through the marching and show learning, parents' night, and rookie induction. After the beginning of school, marching band didn't stop. No, it had just begun with a football game every Friday night for ten weeks. To prepare a half-time show for football games takes much time in and out of school. For this we wish to say, Thank you. When the band turned itself into a concert band, they did an excellent job by receiving a I rating at District Contest. They furthered their musical talents by receiving a II rating at State Contest. On top of all of this, the band gave its Annual Christmas Concert. The band has put forth much time and effort during the year, and we know that the school and the town are very proud of its accomplishments. BAND COUNCIL: C. Rhoades - V. Pres.; P. MlCRORUS The Covington High School Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Barrie Van Kirk, participated in the High School Solo and Ensemble Contest again this year. Along with the usual events came the Annual Christmas Concert. This year the chorus had a new look about them for this event by the girls wearing long black formals. This gave the concert a magical” touch and gave the chorus a special appearance. Spring gave the chorus an inspiration of making an album; but because of the lack of a sponsor, the idea had to be abandoned. They also sponsored a flash sale of stationery in April with the net profits going towards new robes. 117 ajMLMHLli Li -1 U JLM mmmm UUJIIU i i i u H U I I I I U I • a i i- 4 t • - i SEATED: M. This year the NHS has become much more active than in previous years. The constitution was amended, allowing sophomores into the club. The induction was held in January when 21 new members were indicted. We have undertaken four projects this year. We collected books for the Pennywise Shop. We hung signs on lockers honoring those students who made the honor roll. We began a newspaper column spotlighting the CHS senior leaders. Also, this year the NHS published a magazine containing both the literary and artistic works of CHS students. We feel as if we had a very good year and hope that next year is equally successful. 120 SEATED: C. Doty, J. Mengers, C. Manson, D. Slrch, E. O'Diam, M. Cook, editors. STANDING: Mrs. Brown, advisor.
