COVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL COVINGTON, OHIO BUCCANEER 1970 I VOLUME XXIII FOREWORD A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITORS DESK The 1970 Buccaneer is complete at last. My year as editor of the 1970 year- book has been filled with pictures, deadlines, people, and meetings. Like most schools, our staff has devoted much hard work and many long hours into this year's yearbook. It is our desire that as you leaf through these pages, you will recall many priceless moments of the 69-70 school year. I would like to thank our advisor, Mr. Mattson, the staff, the faculty, and the students for their cooperation throughout the school year. He has spent a lot of his time in keeping our school clean and well repaired. He spends ex- tra hours in cleaning up after dances and other special activities. He fills the pop machines and keeps afresh pot of coffee around for the faculty. Mr. Locker plays a big role in keeping the beauty of our school. It’s not every day he is thanked for his services so we are showing our appreciation by this dedication. We all have our own little corner! Mr. Locker and his trusty broom. Keeping the school clean is one of Mr. Locker's daily duties. Keeping the yard well groomed is another of Mr. Locker's duties. Mr. Locker is a necessity at Covington High School. 5 IN MEMOR Y OF BYRON BAGWELL was a member of the Class of 1970 and was killed in an accident in thesummerof 1966. THIRD ROW: D. Pence, D. Wise, S. Graves, P. Brant, D. An- ls a band really needed in a school? Some people cannot answer that because they don't realize what a band does. Our band, under the direction of Donald Jenkins, start- ed their year with a week at Bluffton College for band camp. The band worked very hard at learning different shows for the many football games. The band assisted the cheerleaders in boosting the pep rallies and also marching in the pre-game parades. With all this blowing you can imagine how windy tnese kids are. Loud voices are al- ways needed at the games and the band supplies a lot of them. After football season Concert Band came into the picture. This year our concert season was centered around state and district contest. A I rating was earned at district contest which sent us on to state for a II rating. The band itself is very proud of this achievement and we should be proud that they represent C.H.S. Without a marching band who plays for the basket- ball games? Never fear, the Pep Band is here. The Pep Band, consisting of a small group of members, supplies the pep for basketball games and pep rallies. It takes a lot of hard work to make a great band. We are proud because we have a great band. SCHOOL BAND thony, B. Wilhelm, J. Davis, G. Phoades, P. Asher, D. Flick, P. Sarver, D, Hoblet, K. Besecker, G. Ganger, G. Clark, L. Smith, S. Sarver, T. As is customary the seniors tri- umphed over the juniors but this time, it involved a little more work than usual. The seniors scored only once in the third quarter but only after constant battle on the gridiron. The juniors will be back next year as seniors, so watch out up-coming juniors, they are a tough team. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS, Left to Right: Ann Subler - Trea- surer, Bob Wilhelm - President, Bonita Landes - Secretary, Ken Rogers - Vice President. Throughout many years of school the Class of 1970 worked hard at anything we set out to do. When we entered high school we found that working as a class was better than a few individual efforts and through this work many good memories were created. All our work was pointed toward the prom and finally, with hard work during our Junior year, it was accom- plished. After that the thought of graduation stuck in our minds and the long struggle of twelve years boiled down to a short and final walk across the stage. We will miss COVING- TON HIGH SCHOOL but we leave it with a thought of thanks because it helped form our future.
