COVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL COVINGTON, OHIO THE 1969 BUCCANEER VOLUME XXII photos by OSBORNE The yearbook staff has bound together, in the 1969 Buccaneer, the memorable events of the 68-69 school year. We have tried to capture the year in pictures, from our undefeated football season to graduation day for Seniors, We sincerely hope the 1969 Buccaneer will be as pleasurable production was to the staff, Marilyn Palsgrove EDITOR-IN-CHIEF 2 CONTENTS ADMINISTRA TION................7 FACULTY.......................11 SENIORS...................... 19 JUNIORS.......................31 SOPHOMORES....................37 FRESHMEN......................43 ORGANIZATIONS................ 49 ACTIVITIES....................73 SPORTS...................... 101 ADVERTISEMENTS.............. 123 IN DEDICA TION TO .. . Never a dull moment in the office. As a gesture of our appreciation for her helpful assis- tance, the Student Body presented Mrs. Sweigart with flowers. 4 Busy at her desk is Mrs. Sweigart! . . MRS. MIRIAM SWEIGART Mrs. Miriam Sweigart has been the sec- retary to the principal at Covington High School for the past twelve years. Her assistance is not only to the principal, but to the faculty and to the students as well. She keeps the office running with the utmost efficiency. Her duties include typing stencils and letters for the faculty, keeping the books accurate and advising those who request it. In appreciation from all of us at Covington High School, we dedicate the 1969 BUCCANEER to Mrs. Sweigart! Keeping records in order is a time consuming task. Mrs. Sweigart is always busy, but manages to find time to give advice to faculty as well as students. Mrs. Sweigart is surprised by the gift she received at Christmas by the Student Body. 5 IN MEMORY OF In memory of Larry Shofner, the Class of 1972 and the Student Body of Covington High School reserve this page of the 1969 Buccaneer. ✓ ADMINISTRATION To publish a yearbook requires a great deal of effort on the part of a relatively small staff. But the benefits extend to all students and, in fact, to the entire commu- nity. Those who have had a part in the 1969 BUCCANEER are richly deserving of com- mendation for recording the highlights of the 1968-69 school year for prosperity. My congratulations are also extended to all members of the Class of 1969 for their sponsorship of this publication. C. S. PHILLIPS, Superintendent He received his B.S. degree from Ball State, Masters degree from Miami Univer- sity, and has done other graduate work at Ohio State. As years come and go, it becomes a great pleasure for those who cherish their high school days to reminisce. Your high school annual provides the means for each of you to relive those wonderful and enjoyable experiences had during the school year of 1968-69. To the Class of 1969, it is my fervent hope that each achieves a goal equal to his or her potentialities. BLAIR C. IRVIN, High School Principal He received his B.S. and Masters degree in education, and completed residency requirements for his doctorate at Miami University. 8 MRS. MARY HAYES MRS. After the three busiest years CHS has ever seen, the Seniors decided to sit back and watch the underclassmen work instead of themselves. Thus, they only sponsored one dance during basketball season. The Seniors took time out of their relax- ing to produce the fabulous senior class play, revealing a lot of 'hams but good ones. The Seniors boasted many outstanding foot- ball and track boys, and scholastic students. Somehow they found enough energy to raise quite a ruckus at the kid party, having a ball. But the parents had the most fun watching their kids acting like dumb little brats! With their remaining strength, individ- ually, they proudly walked down the aisle and across the stage of CHS to receive their well deserved and long awaited diplomas. Then as they received their yellow roses, they left Covington High School to become another generation in the future of America, this world, and this universe. ALBERTA WANDA WORLEY For thirty-one girls and thirty-nine boys, twelve years of school are completed. Long hours, hard work and much studying has been experienced in the past as well as many fun moments which will never be forgotten. After high school, many of the seniors are planning to continue their education while others will serve their country in the armed services, begin their working career, or settle down and raise a family. Whatever the choice of the seventy graduates, America is their future and they are the future of America! 27 SENIOR CLASS . . They have had several dances throughout the sports season, a cookie saie and a T-shirt sale. The concession stands at the basketball games were a successful money-making project. Along with a lot of fun and hard work this group performed their first class play. The Juniors are looking forward to next year, their last year of high school. LETTERMEN OF VARSITY C EARN FUNDS The Varsity C was a busy club this 1968-69 year. The members consist of boys who have lettered in some sport and wish to join. Lucky for pledges initiation was discontinued this year. These lettermen ran a faithful coat check at home basketball games and made additional money selling concessions at the Mad River Valley track meet. Those hard earned funds were contributed to the Athletic fund, helping to pur- chase a projector to show films. The Girl's chorus, received a II at District contest, while the larger chorus received a I at District. Proudly, the chorus of Covington traveled to State contest for the very first time and received a high II rating. Unfortunately, the boys couldn't attend contest for lack of time to practice, but they performed superbly on several other occasions. Special recognition goes to the students who attended Solo and Ensemble contest. Using the old CHS talent, they proudly proved that Covington has . Our Fearless Leader!! number one students in Chorus. Full of pride, they brought home a large amount of highly deserved I's and II's, and a few Ill's. All together a most successful day. All together the Choruses have succeeded in one of the most successful years Covington has ever seen, or heard. But as all good things must come to a delightful end, a big shing ding was thrown at the Canedy resi- dence with plenty of food, dancing, and fun for all. FIRST ROW: V. Busby, K. Campbell, C. One really doesn't realize how important these librarians are to you until one isn't there to assist you when you need help. These librarians help you find the books and information you need to do those long term papers. They help shelve books, check out books, and give fines for those books that are overdue. These student librarians attend summer classes for in- struction in library duties. 87 C.H.S. STUDENTS EARN Ron Lamb and John Weikert, delegates to Buckeye Boy's State. Seniors came dressed as little kids and received favors. All the kids played games such as Drop the Hankie before dinner. The kids were given bibs to wear during dinner and were to wear them the rest of the evening or would be confronted with a consequence, which could be wearing a diaper and taking a bottle. After the smorgasbord dinner, relays and a game of musical chairs presented a guessing game where the seniors tried to identify baby pictures of their fellow classmates. Tootin' Ron 100 ATHLETICS Gruelling practices, the desire to win, and teamwork, played equal parts of our winning season this year. Starting in the hot days of August, the team members blocked, tackled, moaned, and groaned, - building up for an undefeated season. Jumping off with a 14-0 win over Tipp City, the Buccaneers pounded out victory after victory. The pressure was on. With tension mount- ing, the Buccs faced a tough Shawnee squad, knowing that their record was again on the line. Pre-game apprehensions faded, however, as the Buccs scored the first touchdown and rolled on to a 20-6 victory. The nerve-wracker was yet to come - Te- cumseh. Trailing in the last quarter 8-12, with one minute and twenty seconds left in the game, Covington won possession of the ball, and scored the winning touchdown. Two more victories followed as Miami East and Northeastern couldn’t curtail the Buccaneer squad. After scoring 24 points in the final quarter of Graham's game, the Buccs won 48-18, officially capturing the MRVL title. Ending the gridiron schedule with a 6-0 win over Greenville, Covington secured the first perfect season since 1960. The cogs of Tisdale's machine may have strained once or twice, but teamwork and determination supplied enough fuel, to gain a final rating of eighth in the state of Class A schools.
