IM COVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL COVINGTON, OHIO THE 1968 BUCCANEER VOLUME XXI i Photos by Wogaman Studios - Artistic Effects by Karen Ingle The 1968 BUCCANEER is a chronicle of this school year. We have tried in this publi- cation to relate the events in such a way that as we grow older, we will be able to leaf through this annual and refresh our memories of the events that occurred during this year. The theme of this book is quite simple— Covington High School, 1968. We have de- veloped this theme in many ways. We have emphasized the school colors, black and white, from cover to cover. We have tried to re- create in picture form the students, their spirit, and their activities during this school term. These main factors, plus the many small details which are included, work together to show the pride we feel for CHS. DWANE I. RUNYAN Mr. Dwane I. Runyan completed his eleventh year as an instructor in the Covington school system this year. During his ten years, Mr. Runyan served as voca- tional agriculture teacher, and recently switched his teaching field to mechan- ical drawing and industrial arts. He has been advisor to many classes as well as advisor to the Class of 1968. For his outstanding guidance and instruction to the stu- dents of CHS, we dedicate the 1968 BUCCANEER to him. 5 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY CONTENTS SUPERINTENDENT..............8 PRINCIPAL...................9 FACULTY.................... 10 SCHOOL BOARD............... 14 FAITHFUL HELPERS........... 13 MR. On the romantic lawn of the ’’Tara Planta- tion, couples danced to the wonderful music provided by the Johnny McCoy Orchestra. Light- ed hurricane lamps decorated the tables, and cookies and punch were served by junior parents from the refreshment stand. A rock garden with bubbling water decorated a portion of the Tara lawn. The evening was climaxed by a riverboat ride down the Ohio River. Even though the rain and fog dampened the evening, the riverboat ride proved fun and exciting. Music was provided by a combo from Versailles, Ohio. Breakfast of rolls, milk, and soft drinks supplied nourish- ment for the prom travelers. After the five buses returned to the high school at 7:30 a. m. Saturday morning, tired kids dragged themselves off the buses and to their cars for their last jog homeward. 108 Teachers and students alike enjoyed the prom. GRADUATION - 1968 The ninety ninth annual Commencement of Coving- ton High School was held May 26, 1968. Sixty-seven seniors were graduated on this day. After the seniors marched in to ‘‘Pomp and Circumstance” played by Marcia Sarver, Mr. J. F. Ladd, acting superintendent, made a few opening remarks. This was followed by Jane Sellman's valedictory address entitled 4‘In Ourselves The Future Lies.” The mixed ensemble then performed a number. Deborah Schilling continued the program with her salutatory speech entitled “Today We Follow; Tomorrow We Lead”, which was followed by Linda Finfrock singing “The Sound of Music . Chuck Deal, class President, gave the class history. The class song, “The Impossible Dream” was then sung by the class. The presentation of special awards was made. Jane Sellman received the Valedictorian trophy, a one year subscription to “Readers Digest and a certificate of Admission with Distinction to the University of Cin- cinnati. Deborah Schilling received the Salutatorian trophy. Cheryl Subler received the Athena Club's Outstanding Senior Girl Award. Diplomas were then presented by Mr. Lowell Yingst, School Board President. Mr. Carl Schackow, principal, presented the Class of 1968 and they sang the “Alma Mater”. CLASS OF 1968 I 10 Baccalaureate was held Sunday afternoon in the High School auditorium. The Rev. Glenn Swope gave the Invo- cation and the Bible lesson. An anthem was sung by the St. John's Lutheran Church choir. The Rev. George M. Stadler of St. John's gave the sermon, while the prayer and Benedic- tion were given by Rev. Miller of the First Church of the Brethren. Seniors anxiously await the big moment. I 0 A B Cole Fosl Seniors playing one of the old favorite games. On Wednesday, May 22, 1968, the Senior parents sponsored the KID PARTY at the Covington American Legion. The seniors came dressed as little kids and received big lollipops as favors. After a smorgasbord dinner, all the kids played games such as drop the hankie, red rover, and farmer in the dell. An ill-fated game of musical chairs preceeded a guessing game where the seniors tried to identify baby pictures of the individual members of the class. A game of drop the hankie proves to be very interesting. Red rover, red rover let the seniors come over. CHS. STUDENTS EARN This section is set aside to honor those stu- dents who have worked especially hard to achieve these awards. Chuck Deal, Jane Sellman, and Paul Laughman are shown here with speech teacher Miss Trost. They were the winners of the Voice of Democracy speech contest sponsored by the V.F.W. The speeches were entitled Freedom's Challenge. Chuck Deal won the first prize of a 100-dollar savings bond, Jane Sellman won a 50- dollar bond as second prize and Paul Laughman won the third prize bond of 25 dollars. The Outstanding Service Award, presented by Mr. Louis Apwisch, is given to students who contributed most to their fellow students, the school, and the community during their four higfi school years. This year's winners were Jane Sellman and Herb Gragg. Susan Myers won a White Sewing Machine, presented to her by Mr. Faler of Falers Sewing Machine Com- pany of Piqua, Ohio. This gift was presented during a style show given by the second period home ec. class before the Christmas holidays. I 16 SPECIAL HONORS. Paul Kenworthy and Chuck Deal, delegates to Buckeye Boy's State. On June 8-16, Paul Kenworthy and Chuck Deal attended Boy's State at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. They spent eight days in a course of political government training. The boys were sponsored by the Covington A. B. Cole Post of the American Legion. Buckeye Girl's State convened on June 17 at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Christa Grise and Betty Yount were chosen by the Covington Women's Legion Auxilliary. They learned gov- ernmental procedures and met many people. 117 Delegates to Girl's State, Christa Grise and Betty Yount. Deborah Schilling took the National Merit Scholarship test in the spring of her junior year. Juniors all over the country participated in the test. Out of all of these participants, Deb was in the top 2 percent. For being in the top 2 percent she was awarded a cer- tificate of commendation. Jane Sellman was chosen the Good Citizen of Covington High School by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This award is based on the demonstration of the qualities of dependability, leader- ship, service, patriotism, and scholar- ship. Jane is shown here with the cer- tificate she was awarded. 118 Daryl Landes earned the State Farmer's Degree, which is an award given to outstanding Agriculture students. Linda Finfrock was voted, by all band members, to receive the John Phillip Sousa Band Award. The award is de- termined by the leadership, depend- ability, and leadership of the individual senior band members. Linda certainly deserved this special honor for her out- standing service to the Covington High School Band. Many times during the season, these boys were not able to compete with boys who were physically larger, but the boys never let it bother them and tried harder. For the season, Ed Shilt was high point man with 242 points, while Herb Stevenson had the most rebounds, pulling down 180. Even though not many people come to cheer the cross country team, the boys worked hard to make the season as successful as possible. The cross country team this year consisted of Bob Penny, Steve Derth, Jim Rumble, Mike Stacy, and Mark Stadler. The course over which the boys ran was a rough obstacle course. The number of points is found by the order in which the boys finish, the team with the least number of points is the winner. Although our scoring was high, competition must be considered.
