THE 1965 BUCCANEER Charms That Link Our School Together Covington High School Covington, Ohio Volume XVIII i A Message From the Editor As years go by, we add precious links to our chain of memories. Many of these memories are added to this chain during our high school days through different events and activities. After our four years are over and we go out into a new kind of life, some memories of past happenings tend to slip into the back of our minds. We have hazy recollections of when they occurred and the people who were connected with them. We may forget names and remember only faces, or possibly we remember names and forget faces. A yearbook provides a lasting memory by linking past and present. As we look through this 1965 annual from time to time, we may be able to relive those occasions that meant something special to each of us. Shirley Cornwell 2 Contents Administration Faculty Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Organizations Activities Athletics Advertisements 12 YEARS OF COVINGTON ATTENDANCE Ruth Johnston These 38 students can be called the “OLD FAITHFULS ' of Covington High. They have attended Covington School from the first grade to the twelfth. We are very proud to have their pictures in the 1965 yearbook. Karen Longenecker Barbara Brant 4 It is with a deep feeling of loss that the Class of 1965 dedicates the 1965 Buccaneer to Phil McCroy, who was tragically taken from us on November 9, 1961. Because of his warm smile and easy-going way, his fellow classmates will long remember him. 5 THE CHARMS THAT GUIDE OUR BRACELET ARE THE ADMINISTRATORS Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 1965 on the production of an outstanding yearbook. Your efforts have provided a graphic record of the outstanding events, personalities, and classroom activities which may be reviewed in retrospect for the school year 1964-65. We extend our best wishes to the Class of 1965 and we hope your success will motivate others to reach the goals you have achieved. C. S. Phillips, Superintendent Take energy and patience and mix them well together. With plenty of good nature that laughs in cloudy weather; add earnestness of purpose in every- thing you plan, and as much determination to do the best you can. Do this with conscientious care, and I think you will confess you've never found a better rule for making a success. Congratulations to the staff and advisor for a job well done on this annual of memories. To the graduating class, best wishes for success and happi- ness in your journey through life. L. A. PICK-A-DILLY The Senior class presented the play, Pick-A-Dilly, on November 13, 1964. The play was under the direction of Miss Doris Trost. The plot was centered around the arrival of the heirs of the late Jason Strong, deceased proprietor of the Shady Dell Funeral Home. Jason Strong was a rich man, and all the heirs were like buzzards at the reading of his will. All of the different characters and their habits made a very humorous comedy for the evening. With the money earned from projects, the boys purchased a new tractor, plow, corn planter, and cultivators. This year the FFA is farming 80 acres to finance new equipment. The FFA is under the capable leadership of its officers: President Dale Kenworthy, Vice-President Gil Carroll, Secretary Tim Colbert, Treasurer, Bill Kenworthy, Reporter Gordon Mullennix, Sentinel Kent Thomp- son, Chaplain Mari'on Rogers. Band The 1964 Marching Band under the direction of Mr. John Palmer spent a week of concentrated march- ing at band camp at Sabina, Ohio. During this week, the band learned the shows which they performed at the halftime of the football games. One of the highlights of the marching band was the attendance of the marching band at the Miami University Band Day on October 3. At the last home game, 18 seniors were honored for their work in band over the past years. After the completion of marching season, the band began working toward their annual winter concert which was held on November 20. The concert band then began preparation for District Contest. The band worked hard to prepare the three numbers which they were to play at contest. On March 19 the band held its spring concert in co-ordination with the chorus. The time had come for District Contest. The band journeyed to Troy on March 27 for the competition. They received a nor excellent rating from the judges. Many signs were used in the campaigns of the candidates who were competing for the title of Homecoming Queen. 73 Disc jockey from WING was present to make the evening a success. The All-Club Formal The annual All-Club Formal was held on March 6 from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. Jerry Kaye, from WING, was the disc jockey. All the clubs sponsored this annual occasion whole-heartedly.
