1 Jhe JO uiccaneer 1964 'Wkat D oes It Take IMlalke a Buccaneer,,' ©o Covington Higlk Set CoviEgtoE, OJ111© oJiiame Foreword I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the yearbook staff and myself, to say “thank you to Mrs. Elizabeth Snell, Mrs. Laura Etter, and Miss Dorothy Sparks for consenting to be our yearbook advisors. Without their patience, guidance, and ability, this 1964 yearbook would not have been possible. Also, I wish to thank the many merchants and businessmen who gave their advertising and support to our yearbook. I am most grateful to the yearbook staff members, whose hard work and cooperation have made this Buccaneer one to be remembered and enjoyed by all. Editor Marilee Carder In view of the fact that we knew little or nothing about the task for which we had offered our services, we are doubly appreciative of the full time, part time, or any old time help which we have been given by those who were willing to work in order to have a yearbook for 1964. He is the sum total of all his experiences. A Buccaneer is influenced by his parents, community, teachers, and friends. All these will help to mold his character as he matures. Various fields may be chosen at the end of his high school career and he is then ready to face the future as an able citizen. So “Go, Buccaneers, go, whatever path you take! IDeJicattion Buccaneers need friends to give proper dimension to our lives - memories of friends who surround us now and memories of friends in the past. Lois Hunt was such a friend to the class of 64. It is with deep reverence we dedicate this book to her. Dedication It takes beautiful and pleasant memories to make a good Buccaneer. So it is with honor We dedicate this yearbook to Lois Arendall, who for many years was a capable and devoted teacher, helping to guide us through the elementary grades. It Takes A Me an 1 Efficient Ail mmistrators Our best wishes go to each member of the Graduating Class of 1964. They have achieved a significant success that will as- sit them in seeking higher educational and vocational goals. We also commend the Class of 1964 for the leadership provided in the publication of this yearbook which is an outstanding service to both our school and community. C. S. Phillips, Superintendent As years come and go, it becomes a great pleasure for those who cherish their high school days to reminisce. Your high school annual provides the means for each of you to relive those wonderful and enjoyable experiences had while a student at Covington High School. When you leave school, many times class- mates and friends scatter far and wide. Dur- ing the passing years, names become dim or forgotten. Faces seldom are lost from mem- ory. Leafing through this fine pictorial ac- count of your school days will soon bring your memories into sharp focus. Congratulations to the staff and advisors for a job well done in providing this mem- orable record. Best wishes and continued success to the graduating class. May your fondest desires and goals be attained and accompanied by good health and a happy life. L. A. Apwisch PAUL FINFROCK, President J. Such officers were Elsie Knutsen, president; John Schmidlapp, vice president; Barbara Etter, secretary; and Jane Ann Hartley, treasurer. The purposes of the Student Council are to promote and foster school spirit, to cooperate with the faculty and initiate measures for the welfare of the student body, and to sponsor and promote student activities. The activities for the 1963-64 Council have been many and varied, such as selling bookcovers, clean- ing trophy cases, printing and distributing football rosters, decorating goal posts at all home football games, playing records during the school noon hour, holding cheerleader try- outs, and maintaining dispenser machines. High lights of the year are sponsoring the Homecoming festivities, Dress Up Day, Student Teacher Day and the All-Club Formal. It is the council's responsibility to decorate the school for the Christmas season, as well as the showing of a Christmas movie to the student body. Awarding a dictionary to Peg Mutzner, the senior student who had made the great- est improvement scholastically in four years of high school was another project of note. A. is to help the members determine if teaching is the career best suited to them. This organization has been an extra- curricular activity at C. H. S. for a number of years. Teachers in different fields of study attend the meetings to explain and promote interest in various phases of study which the members have chosen. The Chapter was in charge of getting capable students to teach classes on Student Teachers Day. In October the club's officers traveled to Columbus to attend the State Convention. A new organization at C.H.S. this year is the Future Nurses of America. The club's main function is to give girls who are interested in nursing some in- sight into the career they have chosen. The members of the club attended a nursing clinic at Springfield City Hospital and a tea at Dettmer Court. The club's programs consist of movies, pertaining to nursing; interesting speakers; visits to area hospitals; and panel discussions. The group's advisor is Mrs. Alma Schilling. Nancy Robinson represented this Chapter as a candidate for queen. Also the girls served for the F.F.A. banquet, held bake sales, and helped at P.T.A. meetings. This years officers are President, Nancy Robinson; Vice President, Linda Sink; Secretary, Jane Flora; Treasurer, Marie Robinson, and Historian, Rita Lyons. The club's very helpful advisor is Miss Margaret Rothermel. Poor thing! From this active chapter of young farmers several of the members spent last summer on a trip to Wampler's Lake in Michigan, while other members went to F.F. A. Camp at Muskingum, Ohio. The group purchased a truck for use on field trips and tours. One such trip was to the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago. This project well established the financial status of the society. Also, the club had a car wash in Covington, and at the lake. We are primarily a service organization, and have raised funds for both the Disabled Veterans Foundation and the March of Dimes campaign. Under the leadership of our president, Gary Beaver, we have, and will continue to serve to the best of our ability, and we shall endeavor to maintain the honor of the Key Club. Before the group even had a chance to feel acquainted with one another they performed for the first P. T. A. meeting of the year. A band clinic was held on February 22, 1964. This was a first for the Covington Music Department. The clinic was directed by George Gaber and Fred Marzan. On the following afternoon Dr. Marzan appeared as the guest soloist at the Winter Concert. Practice concerts were traded with the Milton-Union Band. Later in the season a Spring Concert was given. Efforts were rewarded when the band received superior ratings in both the District and State Band Contests. The group sang at several different church services, for their parents at a PTA meeting, for the student body, and twice during the year they combined with the High School Band, in concert. The choir is grateful for the donations which have made it possible for the entire group to be robed. Then home we rushed for one more change. Couples danced to the music of Russ Lowman. Juniors and Seniors and their dates danced from 8:30 until 11:30 under the blue sky of Paris. 66 G©0 1 Tilings 3 lust C ome to an En 99 At the breakfast most of the Juniors and Seniors were no longer so bright and cheerful. At 12:30 everyone reassembled for the drive to Piqua to see Bon Voyage starring Fred MacMurray. After the movie, the Juniors and Sen- iors and their dates returned to the multi- purpose room for breakfast served by mothers of the Junior class. Bleary-eyed and oh so weary - Au Revoir. The Junior fathers served the dinner dressed as French chefs. THANK YOU . . . The members of the Junior class would like to thank everyone who had a part in making the 1964 Jr. - Sr. Prom the success that it was. These people include the merchants in town who contributed door prizes for the breakfast the Junior class parents who prepared and served the banquet and the breakfast, and last but not least the advisors of the Junior class, Mr. Runyan and Miss Rot her me 1. r 66 l otJUmg i ow Jis lL elrc, Helen Beatty, received her Valedictorian award from Carol Schultz received the Salutatorian award. Friday the 13th turned out to be a lucky day for the members of the Junior play cast. Under the direc- tion of Miss Doris Trost they successfully staged the play, Beauty and the Beef. The Allen’s had just moved to Winnibegushi, but already Ginny was becoming one of the most popular girls in school. Beef, the star football player, was the boy Ginny was after. Everyone knew Beef was a little dumb in history, but they didn't know Ginny had been on the Junior Quiz Program for three years on the subject of history. Ginny knew that Beef would never fall for a brain so she decided to play a little dumb in history and let Beef help her with her history. The way she handled the situation was unique. All this added to one of the best plays put on at Coving- ton High School. The amateur Westmores at work. In this their final year of competition in the Little Buckeye League our football boys managed to eke out a tie for first place in what was supposed to have been a rebuilding year. We cannot possibly cover all that has been accomplished, but these pages are a tribute to those boys who have devoted time which might have been used for other purposes to gain honor and glory for their school. Bill Leeper has thrice broken the record for the mile run. The greatest of these records was the one set 25 years ago by Ramond Garst whose time was 4 minutes 48. 5 seconds. The new record set by Bill is 4 minutes 43.4 seconds. This example proves that team cooperation can result in a winning year.
