Se Uon, ----- . loton Reneto, . ,w n««K T'“'“r' As we, the Class of “55”, leave Covington High School, we take with us many pleasant memories of our school days together. “Today We Follow, Tomorrow We Lead,” is our class motto, and with a well round- ed class like ours which ranks high in scholarship, leadership, music, and athletics, we shall be the leaders of tomorrow. Sky blue and white are our class colors with the white rose as our flower. During our four years in high school we have participated in many activities to raise money for our class treasury. Every year we took part in the magazine sales, and in our Sophomore and Junior years we were high salesmen of the school. Also in our Junior year, we sponsored bake sales, sold pencils and license plates, had a scrap drive, sold refreshments at the home basketball games, and held dances after football and basketball games. In the fall of “53” we presented a mystery comedy, “Aunt Cathie’s Cat,” and the highlight of the spring was honoring the seniors at a “Mardi Gras” reception. In our final year our money making projects were the publishing of the Yearbook and the presenting of the class play. These projects helped finance our class trip to Washington D. C. and New York City. Also in our Senior year, we welcomed to our class Peter Zackenfels, an exchange student from Bremerhaven, Germany. On May 24, 1955, forty-eight seniors will receive their well earned diplomas. Of these forty-eight seniors, thirty-one have gone through twelve years of school together. It is with a tinge of regret and with a feeling of anticipation in our hearts that we leave to become a part of a new and w ider world of learning and understanding. 10 Doris E. Student (?au teil Representing the student body as a whole, the Student Council strives to promote and foster school spirit, to cooperate with the faculty and initiate measures for the welfare of the student body, and to sponsor and promote student activities. Membership numbered fifteen with four seniors, two juniors, two sophomores, two freshmen, and one representative from each seventh and eighth grade home room. This organization, a good example of a working democracy, sponsored the maga- zine sales, the football homecoming. Junior Red Cross campaign, TB Spangle Sale, the March of Dimes, and a paper pick-up campaign. It also constituted the Varsity “C” Club and the Scholarship Club. At Christmas time members of the Council deco- rated the landing between the first and second floors and was in charge of the Christ- mas program. Patone 'panotena s4 ftencco Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve—This motto 01 the Future Fanners of America shows the true viewpoint of farm youth, the “back- bone ’ of our nation. Think of the satisfaction the FFA boy must get, knowing that he is working at one of the most necessary jobs in the world, the feeding of the multi- tude. Out of the thirty boys in the Vocational Department this year, twenty-three of them were members of FFA. The chapter also had one graduate member, Jerry Millhouse. Officers of this organization were Roy Sink, President; Bud Feeser, Vice President; Bob Fenner, Secretary; Larry Slade, Treasurer; Don Filbrun, Reporter; Tony Spill- ers, Sentinel; and Neil Clark, Chaplain. With Mr. H. L. Adkins as their advisor, the Future Farmers carried out a busy program. Some of the activities were promoting better farming programs, encouraging leadership training with participation in parliamentary procedure and public speaking contests, promoting better scholarship by giving awards for achievement, setting up cooperative buying and selling plans, serving the community through improvement programs and church work, promoting thrift and wise use of money, and developing a more wholesome social and recreational life. In connection with the farming program the boys received experience and training in showing their projects at the fair, and their public relations program included radio and television appearances. They celebrated National FFA Week during the week of February 22. Their meetings were planned around the state theme, “The Homes of Tomorrow Are in the Hands of Its Youth.” Among the outstanding activities of this organization were the FHA Parents’ Ban- quet, the radio program, a parliamentary procedure program, and the National FHA Week program which included a window display, a speaker for the school, services to the teachers, and the initiation of the freshmen. This chapter was also active in the county organization by participating in the county rally, leadership training meeting, and being hostess to the county FHA dance in March. This year for the first time the Covington FHA was honored to have a state officer, and because of this it took an active part in the state and national program of work. Edna Mae Wolf represented her chapter last summer at the National Leadership Train- ing Meeting in East Lansing, Michigan, and at State FHA Camp. The State Fair booth and demonstration were outstanding, and as a climax to the year, the members helped with the State Convention. Capable leaders of this worthwhile organization were Pat Spillers, President; Lois Robbins and Barbara Rike, Vice Presidents; Doris Anderson, Secretary; Virginia Flick, Treasurer; Linda Cool, Historian; Patsy Bergman, Parliamentarian; Shirley Ely, Reporter; Dixie Wise and Eileen Fisher, Recreation Leaders; Edna Mae Wolf, State Vice President of Public Relations and County Historian; and Miss Margaret Rothermel, Advisor. Meeting twice a week, the girls enjoyed playing softball, volleyball, and basketball. They also went hiking, swimming, and bowling as a group. Members of this organization who received 150 points were given special awards: the Freshmen, numerals; Sophomores, an emblem; Juniors, a letter; and Seniors, a pin or a letter. Points were earned by attendance, bicycling, hiking, bowling, roller or ice skating, horseback riding, and assistance in gym classes. Purposes of this group are to foster a spirit of good sportsmanship, provide whole- some individual and group recreation, and encourage and promote the development of desirable health practices, attitudes, and ideals. Band. But despite these things, there is music . . . music created by a group of eighty-three students who have worked together for a long time. It was worth every bit of time and practice, though, for if they had not put that effort into their tasks, there would not be those first place records, the trophies, and the inner satisfaction of a job well done. Under the very capable direction of Mr. Wesley Haines, the band had a very success- ful year with top honors coming its way. They took first place at the Bradford Pump- kin Show and at the Brookville Firemen’s Convention. Braving chilly weather, they made ten football performances and several pep band appearances at the basketball games. Besides presenting two public concerts this year, they also gave an exchange concert at Urbana. A special project of the members was purchasing their new band jackets. In March, they attended the District Band Contest. About twenty-five members par- ticipated in the Solo and Ensemble Contest, also held in March. All soloists, ensembles, and the band as a whole obtained outstanding ratings in these events. Sometimes it rocks the rafters and sends the classes to “jumpin’,” and other times, a far-away look can be seen in the eyes of the students as they listen to a sentimental number, a Negro spiritual, or a religious anthem. Vocal music is divided into four groups, freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. Although they do not meet at the same time, most classes enjoy singing the same songs. Presenting the Ninth Black and White Minstrel Show was the most outstanding activity of the combined massed chorus. People came from far and near to enjoy the musical talent of C.H.S. students and to shout with laughter at the antics of the black end men. A spring concert was also given by the entire group. Another accomplishment of the chorus wras the competition in the District Chorus Contest in which a mixed group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors took part. Several ensembles which developed from this group also entered the District Ensemble Con- test, as well as singing for special activities at our school. No little credit goes to the vocal music director, Mrs. Fay the Limp, who helped to make this choral group what it is. Recognition also goes to the pianists who accom- panied the different groups. They were Virginia Flick. Deanne Gish, Marilyn Stade. and Gordon Wilson. 50 First row: Virginia Nickel. Myrna Smith. Pat Hitchcock, Judy Bancroft, Janet Eichelberger, Pat Buckingham, Fern Wise. SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP TEAM On January 29, eight seniors traveled to Troy High School to take the Senior Scholarship Test. They competed with 150 other seniors in Miami County. Placing in the upper 15 per cent of the county and highest in Covington were Don Nead and John Reck. Bud Feeser and Tony Spillers took the State Ag- riculture Test the same day and tied for third place in Miami County. First row: John Reck, Bud Feeser, Tony Spillers, Don Nead. Next fall they plan to enter the “Little Buckeye League.” During the past season the Buccs played two teams from this league, defeating one, Centerville, 13-12. and losing to Brookville, 19-27. Among other accomplishments this year, they won the new traveling trophy pre- sented by the American Legion to the winner of the Bradford-Covington game. It is planned that the team winning the most times in a five-year period will receive this trophy permanently. Other honors presented by the American Legion were won by Howard Anderson, back of the year, and Jim Minnich, lineman of the year. Seniors playing their last season for C.H.S. this year include Minnich, Owen, and Ringelspaugh at tackle; Feeser and Helman at guard; John Rench, center; Anderson, quarterback; Knick at end; Jim Rench, fullback; and Bemus playing halfback. Winning five and losing nine would not seem to be a very good record, but the improvement from the start to the finish showed that the boys had worked hard and had the fighting will to win. Coach Irvin in his first year of coaching did an excellent job of building a team. Since there were only three seniors, experience gained by the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen should help C.H.S. build a stronger organization during the next few years. Seniors on the team this year were Jim Minnich, guard; Howard Anderson, forward; and Rodger Mote, forward.
