Enthusiasm is inflamed by opposi- tion, but never convertedg it is the leaping lightning that blasts obstacles from its path. Enthusiasm is the X-Ray of the soul, that penetrates and reveals the invisible. Enthusiasm is a contagion that laughs at quarantine and inocu- lates all who come in contact with it. Enthusiasm is the vibrant thrill in your voice that sways the wills of others into harmony with your own. Enthusiasm is the UPHILOSOPHER S STONE that transmits dull tasks into delightful deeds. Enthusiasm is a magnet that draws a hundred souls with irresistable force and electrihes them with the magnetism of its own resolves. fi nb Qin ' : .K.-:gr . 11'-'Hit A v I i Dedications are made for men who successfully pledge their lives to a certain cause or idea to establish a better way of doing things, a better system, or a better institution that will benelit others. Dr. Carl J. Brueggemann is a man who fits this description like a tailored su it. He graduated from C.C.H. in 1949 but returned in the time it takes to wrap an ankle, to serve the school not only as an alumnus, but as a friend, avid in spirit and tantamount in dedication. We offer this yearbook in his honor, a symbol of the pinnacle of esteem we hold for him and his years of devoted service to C.C.H. Anyone who's ever seen C.C.H.'s athletic events knows the man with the wire-rimmed glasses is more than a spectator. For all the running he's done for our students, he's got to be the most prolific miler and leading rusher in our schooI's history, and anyone can testify that he has patched many of us up when O 0 K we were bruised, he has picked many of us up when we were de and most importantly, has given us hope when there was doubt. Now we have a new baseball, track and football held to thank him and his Score Committee for, but he seeks no reward though one day it will b great. Reflecting on what he's' done we have to think he composed the school motto, HA Spirit That Will Not Die, for it dehnitely Hows in his blood. C One may ask, llWhy does he continue administering help and services to a high school? Cer- tainly not publicity, for there is none given. He continues laboring for one reason, he uloves C.C.H., and all the gold in Fort Knox can't pay a salary who's collateral is love, because it is priceless. Therefore, we hope our humble thanks and these few paragraphs of grati- tude will suffice because our feelings come from the soul. To Doc Brueggemann, the olde: practicing Colonel we know, thanks. i if , Hi ,rw . . . enthusiasm is the 'iPhiIosopher's Stone that transmits dull tasks into delightful deeds CONGRATULATIONS THAN KS, FR. WEBER Way down in Eastern Kentucky, in the quaint little town of Maysville, a legend was born a few years back. We would like to pay tribute to this man in our '78 yearbook, not because he's the most prestigious human being to come out of Nlays- ville since Nick and Rosemary Clooney, but we salute him for his 25 long years in the priesthood, and as a teacher, now treasurer, at our beloved Covington Catholic High School. His name is Father Charles Weber, a man who somewhere between his youth as a student at St. Patrick's gradeschool and his teenage years, chose to live the life of Christ and decided to enter the priesthood. He was ordained to be a priest on June 6, 1953, in the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, and almost immediately he was sent to be stationed at Covington Catholic High School, and from that moment on has remained. In addition to this, he also holds the position of pastor at St. John's Church in Covington. Father Weber is quite a remarkable man, and looking beyond the fact that he dislikes to have his picture taken and only smiles once every leap year, we can see beneath this mask, one whose love and dedication for Covington Catholic and his profession is an unparalleled'accomplishment. We, along with the rest of those who have come in contact with Father Weber, tip our hats to his many years of faithful service. No ordinary man can really fully visualize what he's done for the people of Covington for the past 25 years, because, well, Father Charles Weber is no ordinary man, he's somebody special. 10 MR. The fans, who continually packed stadiums, the student body being the main force behind them all, witnessed a slow Colonel start. This was mainly due to the toughness of the schedule and several injuries to key players. The team came alive against Conner and almost pulled out a squeaker, but they came up just two points short. With their confidence built and pride regained, the Colonels won the next two games, beating Ludlow and upsetting arch-rival Dixie much to the pleasure of their devoted fans. Another win was not seen until two games later when Dayton was forced to their knees by our still battling Colonels. At a glance the season was a losing one with a record of 3 wins and 8 losses, but with a deeper insight one can see a season that showed pride, guts and determination. The Reserve football team finished with a fine record of 5 wins and 2 losses and should be congratulated on an outstanding season. This year's team, coached by two former grads of Cov. Cath., Rick Hornsby and Dan Donoghue, was well equipped with talent and will have to be reckoned with on the Varsity level next year. The Colonels perhaps played in the shadow of the newly constructed stadium, anticipating its completion for next Fall. But for the Seniors who played their hearts out every game, there was no next year. To them a special thanks is given and it is a well deserved one. 1st Row L. to R.: M. Keller, B. Erpenbeck, D. They played their game of football with boyish enthu- siasm, and it taught them to be men. It taught them dedication through long, grueling practices on the gridiron. This game, football, also taught them pride when they saw themselves improving through hard work, as they did in their narrow loss to Holmes. From this sport, they also learned to respect the efforts of their dedicated coahes, Tim Banker and Dan Tieman. On Sept. 15, they discovered the joy of winning when the young Colonels defeated the strong Lloyd Juggernauts for their lone victory of the year. This team tasted the bitterness of defeat, but were secure in the fact that they had tried their best. These les- sons shaped young boys into men and true Colonels. SOCCER '77 Under the expert coaching of Mr. Joe Nam and John Toebben, the 1977 Soccer team won the respect and admiration of friend and foe alike. This, the first of a long line of teams to follow, will be remembered for its unprecedent- ed ability to win the big game. For in quest of a perfection only a champion would know, the team compiled a 3-3 record and took lirst place in the Lexington Sayre Invitational and the Northern Kentucky League as well. Only those dedicated, who persevered the pains that come with victory, know what a true victory is. To say the least, the pain became the mole-hill and the team became the mountain. For this group of men fell under the heading of a Covington Catholic team, and to be entitled to such a name, a team must keep up a tradition of winning that goes back 52 years. Win they did, and in a fashion that portrayed the image of the proud Colonel as their inspiration. The desire to win overcame the quantity of ranks. Their fans as well as their opponents will tell that our school was well represented and the Colonel as well as his spirit will not die. lst Row: D. Witt, V. Michels, T. Brucato, J. Mueller, B. This word could best describe the 1977 Cross Country Team. This became the feeling among the runners, Mr. Kaelin, and Mr. Wilkins throughout the season. This unity began in July when the Colonels logged many miles together preparing for the up-coming season. In August this feeling was enhanced as Father Bill opened practice with the third annual cross country retreat. As the competition started, the Colonels streaked to a perfect 12-O record by midseason, however, the team met their first and only regular season setback when arch- rival Lloyd caught the Colonels napping. tRevenge would be sweetlli The remainder ofthe season contained many ups and downs, for the Colonels participated in various invitationals with the best competition from all over the state taking part. In addition, the J.V. Team proved their dominance by going undefeated and taking Hrst place in three invitationals. Through it all the i'Unity was still alive! The Regional Meet was held at the World of Golf on Oct. 29, This day could be classified as a true day of the Colonel, for Coach Kaelin's harriers captured the 1977 Cross Country Regional crown for the first time in seven years de- feating second place Lloyd by a score of 54 to 59. The Colonels then proceeded to take that coveted trip downstate only to ind inexperience their conqueror, their season ended with a fourth place Hnish in the state meet. Even though the meets have all ended, to the men of the 1977 Cross Country Team that 'lUnity will live on for- ever! First Row: L to R. It is not there just yet, but it is one of the fastest growing sports in our school. Many people may not know it, but swimming is one of the strongest sports-winning wise-at Covington Catholic. Throughout the history of C.C.H.'s swimmers, no team has ever finished lower than 4th in any ' l: !.Fi1- ' state meet. And as the cheer went, the Aqua 5- Colonels captured UTwo Straight in '78 , as they proudly displayed their 2nd state championship trophy. Next year's cheer was already initiated as team and students plunged into the pool chant- ing 't3's Fine in '79 . Last year's yearbook-writeup closed with the lines: Next year will be a good one for the re- maining swimmers, and maybe, just maybe, the Colonels can keep that State title. This line was fulfilled, and next year with the help of Coach Hagedorn and the unity of every present returning member, the Aqua Colonels are con- fident of adding one more state title. 3's Fine in '79 l!!!!!! lst row, iL.-R.l: J. With six experienced seniors, Coach George Schnieder looked to these players to give the W school a state championship team. Unity may have been the best characteristic of this year's squad, for it was team work that gave them their success. And success they had, slating a 19-8 record, with four losses handed down by state runner-up Holmes High School. The highlight of the season came in the Newport Catholic Christmas Invitational when the team lost in the hnals by two points to the Holmes Bulldogs. Later on in the season, the roundballers lost in the semi-finals of the 9th Region Basketball Tournament to the stalling Lloyd Juggernuts. It was an enjoyable season, full of exciting moments in basketball history. With their style of play, plus the combination of devoted fans and parents, this was almost the year of the state champs. With a grand total of over 135 members, you'd think this society of athletes would have no problem raising funds for their functional purpose. Wrong. The C-Club has been in financial trouble since they went independent in 1975. This imbalance in funds was not due to the laziness of its members but a string of bad luck and weather. Snow and other appoint- ments made dance ticket sales low, and the athlete activity in sporting events this year was very high. But nevertheless, the C-Club is one of the most popular and distinguished clubs in the school. The success of this year's club was made possible by its faculty advisor, Mr. Jack Kaelin. This year's club was literally carried by this great man, whose weight is equal to the combined weight of the C-Club members. The C-Club doesn't know how lucky they are to have this giant of a man as its faculty advisor. lst row: L. to R., J. Schulte, B. Kelly, B. Klaine, K. Ringo, M. Finke K. Schneider, C. Fedders, C. The worshippers of this man, whatever the reason may be, held not Hone but l'four meetings this year, which may be material for Ripley's Believe It or Not. The Chet Club takes after a man who in reality did nothing as President, Chester Allen Authur, so in keeping with that tradition they do as little as possible themselves. The big money raiser of this club is the big turkey raffle. Now this may be one of the members but then no one really knows for sure. They then use their business-like minds to buy pens and ped- dle them at a financial loss to the club. Under the experienced leadership of Mr. Rick Naire, the multi- talented magnificent seven made their way to fame and fortune in their two separate productions, each featuring monologues and skits. The Drama Club spent many hours of practice weeknights rehearsing their acts, and generally having a good time. It is doubt- ful that any Robert Redfords will turn out from this group, but don't write off some- one the likes of a Mel Brooks. Considering the small size of the group, the Drama Club did an excellent job and should remain an important part of our school. lst row, L-R: K. Heidrich, G. Boyle, M. Whittle, G. Fabre Standing: M. Once again the great Outdoorsmen s Club experienced a year of danger suspense and nerve racking excitement while tackling the elements of the great outdoors True they didn t go on a camp out this year but after all it was c c cold out there It was rumored that a hike had been planned but according to re- liable sources the hike was cancelled when no one could find the woods. Please don t get the wrong idea about the 0utdo,orsmen's Club. They did engage in one ' threatening activity this year. On Tuesday, March 14, the daring members of the club braved natur worst and stood outside for a full 10 minutes while the club portrait was being taken. Luckily, no one was injured during the incident. Mr. Roberts, the club moderator, did have some trouble keeping squirrels out of his beard, and acting president, Jersey Joe Walko, narrowly missed getting his feet muddy. BEAUTIES AND THE BEAST The 1978 Yearbook Staff has put out an exceptionally entertaining yearbook for CCH and it's nostalgic cohorts this year, but don't be fooled by the Howery prologue above, it was like pulling teeth to get this master- piece published. Now don't get me wrong, the staffmembers were all good kids, but tears of despair flooded our poor moderator's pupils when she discovered the only writing utensil these guys were schooled in operating, were their deluxe 3 inch crayolas ifor the fat fingered artist in your housel which they previously used to decorate mommy's kitchen cabinets with. Now we know the course was tough as shoe leather, but maybe it was a pinch harder for these newcomers because they tried writing copy while reclining on their backs with P.J.'s on and eyes closed in the dark conines of their bedrooms. Maybe they became discouraged when they sat down to type their copy and found they had a full beard when they were finished. Then, when they tried sob stories, plagerism, and sui- cide threats as excuses or anecdotes for missed deadlines, they were coldly turned down with an icy glare as their moderator stated bluntly, It's not nice to fool Mother Meyer. Aside from all the difliculty though, I feel the 1978 yearbook is an outstanding revelation and something that many Colonel memory seekers will wear thin from cover to cover, reliving days when we were all foot loose and fancy free. As far as the staff itself goes, they turned out to be a select group of literary geniuses that someday soon will make their mark in one corner of the world or the other, and if you believe that, I've got 135 acres of rolling farmland teeming with vegetation for sale in the mid- dle of the Arctic Circle. Thanks to Mr. Dan Tieman the 1977-1978 in- tramural program became one of the most spirited aspects of our school. It began with volleyball in the fall and ended with basketball in the winter. During the nights there could be heard in our gym the BOOM of a well-aimed spike or the WO0SH of a well-executed jump shot as the students ferociously battled one another on the court. During the day the students heatedly ar- gued over which team was the best and bitterly complained about the redness of the faculty team. Although the students played the games with much intensity, and although the students argued and complained, they had fun. But most importantly, intramural athletics got the stu- dents involved. As the leaves fell from the trees outside, volleyballs were flying inside. Ten teams be- gan the season. By the end only two were left- Don Rolfsen's and Jim Volpenhein's teams. The championship game was an interesting match up- the quickness of Rolfsen's team versus the strength of Jake's, Rolfsen's consistent ser- ving vs. the mean spikes of Jake, the Rolfsen brillo-pad afro against the smooth, Adorn-co- vered hair of the Volps. The rug head team was victorious, and the Adorn boys had to settle for second. As the season changed, so did the sports, the round-ballers took to the hardwood. The season began with such creatively-named teams as the i'Sunspots and the Oh Wows trying to gain the coveted championship. The 'iTreetops, led by Mike Thomas, came out on top of the closely matched field by defeating the ilRough- necks by two points in overtime. The season was closed out as the student all-star team barely lost to the relieved faculty by a mere two points. This intramural season gave the students something to talk about for years to come. It has been said many times that putting out a school newspaper is not exactly a time consuming task or something that will keep many students up late at night slaving feverishly to meet deadlines. To this I politely say, l'Bunk. One hasn't experienced pressure and strain until they've labored for the Colonel Cable. Why the newspaper's 1978 staff members were literally flogged by their overseer when articles wereri't turned in on time, skipping class deserved a life sentence reading, The Complete Written Works of Andy Cox, and if you so much as laid a finger on his olicial grammarian speakers' tripod, you were considered a felon and should receive no less than the slow painful torture of death by lecturing. You may ask, 'lWhat kind of man would delight in being addressed, 'Hail to the Chief,' or 'We love you Scoop?' What kind of man would place punctuality over sanity itself? What kind of fiend would place journalism above Christmas dinner with Mom? Well, I'll tell you, Mr. William P. LeJeune, that's who. The man, a pussycat by night, but a ruthless, journalistic tyrant by day, he ruled with an iron claw in the classroom and demanded perfection from all his reporters. I honestly believe printers ink flows in his veins, and as you can see by the outstanding newspaper he and his staff put out each month, he isn't thought of through the corridors of CCH as William Randolph LeJeune for nothing. We salute our leader and the oftentimes controversial newspaper produced each month in this 1978 school year, and remember, liThe only thing worse than being written about, is not being written about at all. The 1978 Student Senate, otherwise referred to as Covington - Catholic's version of the San Diego Zoo or Northern Kentucky's take off of the greatest show on earth, was a wild bunch to say the least- but contradictory to their idol, Jimmy Carter's administration, the Dietz administration had more success than the sale of bottled beer, more unity than Marines marching in step, and more activity than Rachel Welch's undulating back-field. Yes, despite the fact that the majority of our senators are parolees from the state pen or just plain looney, period, they managed to blend a unique array of personalities and characters to form one of the most spirited senates in U.S. history. Besides sponsoring the annual Super Hike, the usual Senate, and the perennial Prom, Christmas and Homecoming dances, the Senate took on many other new and unusual projects. They constructed a float for the Homecoming football game complete with colored balloons, for all the teenage adolescents at CCH. They organized a couple of firsts, in the Student-Faculty Executive Committee, and the Schoolboard Student Liason, to fortify friendlier communication between faculty and students. They staged a Super Rally with Fireworks, Haming arrows, and even dancing girls, for the hungrier members of the student body, a 78 class gift of a scoreboard for the new sports complex, a rash of senate resolutions for all kinds of special organizations and people, and for all the less excitable usquares in the Tri-State, they even had a t'Square Dance with real live professional callers, hayrides and honest to goodness horse manure. Could we have done it all ourselves? I doubt it seriously seeing that counting to ten, remembering our names and eating with a spoon are painstaking tasks for our intellectually strained senators. We must extend sincere appreciation to Father Putka, our beloved moderator whose humongous encouragement, huge sense of guidance and vast knowledge of the Constitution, ino, this is not intended to be a description of the good father's physiquel, shaped the Senate into one great governing body. Though he stood like a I rock and corrected them sternly when they made parliamentary miscues, he was in fact a Puttycat within the Pikes Peak frame of his. A man with his superior qualities could make your hair stand on end, so the Senate thanks Father John and if our paths should ever cross again, UWe still say you eat more than Euell Gibbons. We'll miss the Class of 78 and their ine Senate, but like the great administrations of their forefathers, ithe Pierce's, the Grant's, the Nixon's, the Dempsey'sl, their accomplishments will be remembered for a long, long, long, long ,.... lst Row, L.-R.: Eric Wichman, Bill Metzger, Paul Sartori, Pete Ganshirt, Mark Gosney. 2nd Row, L.-R.: Jude Schulte, Tom Miller, Paul Tenkotte, Chris Dillon, Joe Metzger, Chris Schulte, John Zembrodt, Dan Dietz, Jim Wolpenhein, Kris Mohr, Mike Schneider, Tim Brueggemann, 3rd Row, L.-R.: Father Putkat, Mike Vormbrocke, Chad Wichmann, Tim Schlotman, A.J. Despite the loss to Newport Catholic, the Homecoming fioat, the half-time festivities, and all the rushing to get everything ready for the occasion, made it a do or die situation for the seniors to enjoy themselves at their last Homecoming. It was a great success! Remember the ,dinner reservations before the dance? the party before the dance? Well, if you managed to stroll into the Blessed Sacrament Hall that night, you were insured a night of dancing to the great sound of White Bread. Oh, and don't for- get the after dance party, where most couples were congratulating Tom Durrett and Julie Zembrodt on being chosen king and queen. Remembering, that's what it's all about. For this was the Homecoming of our dreams! It's that easy? ,tix 7' l gf' , Q ' 1 foot-ache. 123 THE CHRISTMAS DANCE The 1977 Christmas danceg, held at the Hofbrau House, Dec. 23, began at nine when the hrst students excitedly strolled in. The chilled couples were' met with the warm sound of 'lThe Best Band in Town , who kept the couples, teachers, and chaparones on their feet well past midnight. Yetlwithi all the dancing and celebrating, how could there be more? But there was Mohr! First, Kurt, bringing back memories of the King himself, Elvis, and then Dad FILLING the suit of Santa. All in all, Christmas came a little early for those who attended the dance, as all were given a good time with memories toiremind them that the 1977 Christmas Dance was something special. 1, iii! ii 4 a -l it li 'S l Who could hug' a Mackie? 124 QW- .,..-.. is Vg Sing one Mohr, Elvis! i v I E Gee, what Mohr could a guywask for, Santa? Students were introduced to the world of work by men who have been there for many years. Each representative gave the students an insight into their respective held and followed up by answering a multitude of questions. For many, this day laid concrete foundations for their future. For others, this day pointed them in the right direction, so who could ask for anything more? 5 -. .. U' F 125 ' 1 ll-1 'L R... L. ... . ,, .,.. .. .,',- i F F 4 5 V5 'VIA I -A -Q 5iy! '?4'f ' ' ' :. Students lingered through many exhibits, listened to speeches and ended their day with a movie. The movie, 'tLittle Big lVlan was well liked by all and helped tremendously to bring out the message or purpose of the day. The American Indian an important part of our own country's heritage, are a persecuted people and they will continue to be persecuted until something is done. 'lFor a subject worked and reworked so often in novels, motion pictures and television American Indians remain probably the least understood and most misunderstood Americans of us all. -John F. Kennedy On lVlay 5th, students approaching the school were met by twowtowering teepees and the sounds of Indian chants. The next thing one would expect to see is an Indian, and that is exactly what they did see, in fact and full-blooded Indians came to Covington Catholic to reveal their knowledge of the noble red-man at the Americar Indian Day Celebration. On lVlay 20, the timid Juniors along with the experienced Seniors made their way to Cincinnati's Convention Center in their newly waxed cars along with the girl of their dreams. Giant Steps shook the floor which coaxed most everyone's feet into dancing. The few remaining were seldom heard or seen except the back of their heads. As John Zembrodt was crowned king, the rest of the court looked on admiringly. When This NIasquerade ended about one o'clock, everyone dispersed to private parties. Most Juniors, so they were later told, found their ways back home in the early morning hours while the experienced Seniors were able to hold out well after daybreak. The chaperones were not heard of again, but the last clue to their later activities can be well surmised, since Fr. Putka was seen with a case of bourbon. NX. Mark, PLEASE let's dance. Tenkotte BEST WISHES TO THE CLASS OF 1978 ..-- .,,. . -,,,,,l, To the class of 79, we wish the best of luck. We know that good fortune and success will be on your side. We thank you for your dedicated support. Farewell! It has been the best four years of our lives!! OFFICERS. Dan Dietz Pres. Jim Volpenhein-Vice Pres. Kris Mohr-Sec. John Zembrodt-Tres. SENATORS: Chris Dillon Pete Ganshirt Joe Metzger Bill Metzger Paul Sartori Chris Schulte Paul Tenkotte Eric Wichmann ASSOCIATE SENATORS: Tim Brueggemann Mark Gosney Chuck Fieger 14 144 The last page of the class of 78's high school yearbook has been turned, and before we close the cover of graduation on our four year stay, we cannot help but feel thankful to Covington Catholic for all we've learned, for all we've accomplished, and most importantly, for all the friends we've made. We Seniors can't imagine what it will be like not hearing Father Putka saying, 'Wake out a half sheet of paper, or Loraine's vocal chords summoning teachers to the office, proving why the box on the wall is referred to as a i'LOUD speaker. How shall we survive without Friday's pizza elegantly burned around the edges for better flavor, or Brother Cash Amburgy Fortener and his bargain basement who had anything and everything for sale? What shall we do with the time we used to spend cruising in a motorcade, hanging out the window screaming Beat, Beat, Holmes! for words to that effecti? How can we forget 7th period in D.T., or the prom and the tux, our first encounter with class? When we search for answers to these questions our train of thought is interrupted by a lump in our throats that's hard to swallow. ' We will walk out of the Cathedral with great expectations and hope for our futures, but with sorrow in our hearts for the good times we leave behind. Covington Catholic High School has been the most enjoyable segment of our lives, and though many of us will move far away and never stroll down those halls again, we will carry a part of C.C.H. with us, . that can never be taken away, i'The Memories . The Class of '78 bids the Fighting Colonel . a nostalgic and fond farewell. .
