Principal Dear Colonels, The end of any slchool year brings its share of joys and sadness. Much we have to look back on with pride and satisfaction. Most of our regrets are that the year had to end, that the seniors must say goodbye and carve out a new life in uncharted land. What was so good about the past year? The trophycase crammed with awards won this past year bears eloquent testimony to excellence in athletics as well as speech and debate. The school's long dream of having a football team was realized when the stu- dents themselves raised the necessary funds. Seniors benefited from the new honors program introduced this past year. It was indeed a year to remember. Best of all the school is moving more and more into the area of student involvement in various apostolates . The Sodality, the weekend leadership sessions, direct aid to poor families, assiste ance to needy students With tutoring, --all these show Catholic education in its finest role. Much of our sadness is saying goodbye to Brothers Dan Donovan and Howard Knachel. With us all four years, these two Marian- ists left us an example worthy of lifetime emulation. We thank God for two such teachers. Sincerely yours in J.1VI.J., Dedication When we, as Freshmen, entered Covington Catholic, Brother Dan Donovan entered with us. It seems rather fitting that since he entered with us, he also leaves Covington Catholic with us. But Brother Dan's stay here will not be forgotten by the many people with whom he came in contact. There is so much that can be said about this generous person that we could fill an entire page so instead, we, the Senior Class, would like to dedicate this Yearbook to the person who has helped many of us very much and who has aptly been called Brother Covington Catholic . . . Bro. Dan Donovan. Bro. Dan always tried to make his classes as enjoyable as possible. Brother Daniel Donovan, S.M. FAC U LTY Religion Gives Basic Facts of Faith Chairman Rev. James McKay, S.M. Bro. Dick Heil, S.M. Although his stay at Covington Catholic was a very short one, many of us came to know and like Brother Dick very much. In the few months that he was here teaching, Brother Dick became a very outstanding member of the F amily of Covington Catholic; a mem- ber that we will miss. He was very active in unifying the Fresh- man class and also in building up the spirit of the upperclassmen. For this and for his unfailing interest in the many school activi- ties, Brother Dick deserves the thanks of the entire student body. Brother Richard Heil, S.M. Brother Dick and the other Brothers join in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the community's chapel. 22 mm...; MHNMHWA ......-Mm-. .M W .4 su l . 4.. - 5.5::4'2 .w. 4i SENIORS Fred W. In August before the first semester began, Brother Dan and the newly elected Student Senate officers met to plan the upcoming year. It was decided that the goals of this year's senate would be to provide activities that would interest all the students, to encourage the participation of everyone in these activitiesJ and to strengthen the prevailing school spirit. Brother McKee showed his intention of helping toward these aims by agreeing to reinstate the Freshman Initiation that was abandoned two years ago. The first of our setbacks came in October when the homerooms were flooded with students selling yearbook subscriptions, senate cards, Pumpkin Prowl tickets, or collecting for the Seminary Drive. A great deal of credit goes to all those home- rooms who kept their heads above water during this month. With everything going on at once it is no wonder that the results weren't quite as good as anticipated. In November the Student Senate sponsored the annual Campbell Lodge Festival. Nothing more must be Said about the greatest festival in the school's history other than congratulations to chairman Mike Whelan and all the others responsible for a job well done. At the semester break the Student Senate received the disappointing news that Brother Dan would be unable to return as OuS moderatox. Despite the difficulty of such a mid-year switch in moderators, however, the senate was able to do a credit- able job. The determination and dedication of out new moderator, Brother Bob Ivory, was the main reason for this. Under his guidance the last of the semiuforrnal dances, the Mardi Gras, was held in February. Throughout Lent contributions poured in for the Bishop's Relief Fund giving us an outstanding total at the end. In April the school launched 3 Chocolate Drive that was backed by the Student Senate enabling us to field out first football team next fall. Many other new programs were initiated in 1966 including a Music-Art-Drama Festival, a well organized Career Night, and a performance by the Cincinnati Symphony. Perhaps every goal was not achieved 95 hoped last September, but the members of the student senate did their best to make the past year a good one for everyone. SEATED 1. to L: President William Hoppenjans, Vice President Michael Whelan. STANDING: Bro. Daniel Donovan, Secretary John Runda, Treasurer Thomas Schaepet, Bro. Robert Ivory 96 The school year was a type of Great Awakeningll for the Spiritual-Cultural Committee of the Student Senate. The Father Belting Drive, the Music-Arts- Drama Festival, and the performance by the Cin- cinnati Symphony Orchestra were all conducted under the committee's auspices. While many undertakings did not measure up to ex- pectations, all represented a greater interest than ever before in this aspect of stu- dent life. KNEELlNG l. to r.: Randall Dance, Jon Bushelman, Charles Egolf. STAND- ING: Joseph Kreimborg, Chairman Paul Tepe, Michael Donovan, Robert Wieck, Daniel Eggemeiet, Charles Stander. A true Colonel could never forget the Friday night dances or the well- planned semi-formal dances that are put on dur- ing the school year. They are the result of the hard work and dedication of the members of the Social Committee. We all owe these-members much thanks and praise for their time and effort. L. to L: Edward Rice, Michael Burke, Chairman Michael Major, Robert Rutemiller, John Pohlman. 97 The Spirit Committee was perhaps the busiest of the standing committees in this year's student senate. Intramural baseball and basketball, track and field day, and all rallies were the responsibility of this group. Their hardest job, however, was keeping track of the homeroom's standings for the spirit banner. We hope that the strength of this committee will grow in the coming years. H I L r L. to 1.: Bemard Brown, William Fleck, Chairman Thomas Thiel, Stephen McCafferty, William Kathrnan. Question: How can anyone be alert and smiling at 7:30 in the morning? 98 Sodality H you have read even this far after seeing the title of the article, you have done better than most. The very word So- dality seems to remind people of goodie-goodiest', religion books and all kinds of such evil things. And it is these ima pressions that give Sodality two strikes before it even gets to bat. It is further true that Sodality almost missed the third strike as well this year. Usually, it is agreed that the Sodality was certainly not as active and was probably not as successful as in past years. However, a new door was opened this year for looking at this organization. Sodality has, and must more, become a way of living, rather than a praying session for one hour every week. It has, and must, become an opportunity to sit down and talk frankly about whatever one may wish, be it girls, dating, drinking, school work or what have you. It seems that too often when teenagers are in a group, they feel that they have to put on a front, and maintain their impression as being a neat guy OI a neat girl. In Sodality one can, and should be able to, say anything he or she likes Without any fears of anyone holding it against them. And, as Socialists strive to better themselves together, they need not feat such tags as candy, sissy or goodie-goodie for saying something they feel of a religious nature. However, Sodality cannot stay within itself. It needs to spread to, and help, others. An example of this was a group dis- cussion with some giIls from Notre Dame Later, this group decided to take about fifty little colored kids on a picnic. This is the type of ACTION that Sodality would like to develop. And, of course, one should not forget the fun and genuine satis- faction experienced in this type of woxk. Such ideas as speaking straight, playing hard, and helping others are the ones that need to be associated with Sodality. And, although it; may have been a very feeble one, lfeel that these ideas have had a start this ye at. The debate team, al- though failing in its bid to retain the regional Championship, did bring home some first place tr0w phies. Lyons is a worker; one of the few around who can work without praise or acknowledgement. Independence from praise is a valuable gift, more valuable than praise itself. J. P. is responsible for the great success which the CONTACT had this year. In switching the format from magazine to newspaper, he was able to pxint more news more often than ever before. He handled a large staif of writers fairly and wisely, thus keeping the CONTACT read- able and interesting. By stressing individuality in writing, fresh points of view, and personal and objective evaluation of events, J.. P. was able to print articles by a staff writing not of necessity but of interest. The staff seemed to draw their interest from J. P. him- self. He often stayed at school from dismissal until ten or eleven o'clock working to meet the deadline. Often he had to proofread, edit and type all the articles with the help of only a few interested staff members. But then J. P. never asks for much help; he would rather do it him- self whether he has to 01' not. The result of his efforts was a new CONTACT, full of new features and modernized standard featuxes, to keep EditOI J- P- Lyons pace with the new school Covington Catholic has become. N0, J. P. could not have done it alone; he needed the help of the modeIato: Mr. Dom, the gxeat work of the staff, and the occasional aid of a typist, for J. P.'s typing is too much hunt and not enough peck. But even though he could not have done it alone, J. P. Lyons would have tried: that's the way he is. Under the guidance of Mr. Kasselman the club accomplished a great deal. During meetings members experimented with such things as black light, ultrasonic sound and various phases of eleCe tronics. Members also paved the way for future members by starting con- struction on a large reflector telescope and by doing pre- liminary work and researCh 0T1 lasers . 1.. to 1.: John Themes, Paul Lahner, Iianeus Barczak, James Emark, David Suetholz, John Ramsey, Robert Brady, James Schoettker, Steve Fried, Eric Hilgeford, Walter Molony, John Feldman, Moderator ML Kasselman. Biology Club Under the guidw ance of Brother Gene Loewer, S.M., the Biology Club took huge strides in its attempt to become a very active ore ganization. Field trips were planned and a few new ani- mals were added to the facilities of the school. The boys built the cages for the lizards and the like themselves. Indeed the Biology Club is starting its rise to the top of the most popular clubs. L. to L: William Jordan, J. Dorger, Charles Scheper, J. Covington Catholic's It's Academic trio started slowly and then tapered off on the program aired on WLW hT January 2. The panel, made up of seniors Tom Schaeper and Mike Kreyling and junior Larry Funke, finished in front of Bethel -Tate High School but behind New Richmond. Answering some questions too quickly and encountering others for which they had no answers put the team in a difficult position early in the game. Going into the third round of questions, C .C .H. had amassed a grand total of 5 points. Needless to mention, this is not an advantageous position in which to be when it usually takes around 250 points to be in contention. But, under the superb leadership of Father McDermott and with the Cheering of our supporters, the team determined not to toss in the towel. In our part of the third round, C.C .H. picked up valuable ground in running their total to around 100 points. Sensing the chance of victory, the team dominated the Grab Bag round. But alas, the time was too short and C.C.H. fell short in its bid by the narrow margin of a single question. For their efforts, however, C .C .H. was awarded a set of literature books and a full page in the yearbook. 307 Band During its second year, the Concert Band of Covington Catholic has increased considerably. This increase has not been so much in size, but rather in the musical abilities of its members. The Band and its jazz trio have brought the mane of Covington Catholic High School to top standards during the past year by performing in different events and places in the area, such as Notre Dame High School, Fort Wright Civic Hall, Parents- Teachers meetings at Covington Catholic, Coney Island, Covington's Memorial Day parade and for many student events at school. Under the direction of Brother Thomas Salerno, S.M., the band can play a variety of musiccompositions consisting of classical pieces, jazz and popular tunes. ' We hope that in the future the size of the band will increase and will reach the status of a marching band. If this past year's progress continues, it will not be a hope, but a reality. Brother McKee, Reverend Fathers, members of the faculty, parents, friends, and members Of the graduating class of 1966 these are more than mere words to a popular song. They are the very reason for our being here this morning. In our four years at Covington Cath- olic, I think that we have come to a realization of the real meaning behind these words as a re- sult of the experiences that we have shared together while we were here. On an April morning five years ago, over two hundred eighth grade students gathered at CovF ington Catholic for their high school entrance examination. Less than six months later we were assembled once againu-this time as the Freshman class. As we entered the building on the first morning of school in September we were strangers to each other, timid, alone and confused by the enormity and complexity of the high school system. It did not take very long, however, for these strangers to get to know one another. The sen- iors welcomed us to Covington Catholic by an initiation. This program successfully brought our class together as the Freshmen were compelled to join forces to survive the initiation stunts that were contrived for us. Soon after the initiation was completed we encountered for the first time the mysterious ways of our cafeteria, the memories of which have stayed with us throughout our four years here. Among the other highlights of that first year were a championship swimming team which brought home a runner up trophyfrom the state meet in Louisville, and our first Campbell Lodge Festival. It was truly this festival which taught us the meaning of the words no man is an island because we learned that we had to work together if we wanted it to be success-u ful. The Freshman year passed quickly into the Sophomore. This was a period of transition; a growing up for our class . We were now in a position to sneer at the lowly, incoming freshmen, yet we were not old enough nor wise enough to show the initiative and leadership of the upper- classmen. It was during this year that our class spirit began to really develop under the guid- ance of several interested homeroom teachers. The best example of this class spirit that I can remember was the sophomore picnic t0 Butler State Park. In our junior year we copped the coveted spirit banner four times without much challenge from the other divisions. The juniors lead the way to outstanding contributions for the Seminary Drive and the Bishop's Relief Fund. It was a year of good basketball that took us all the way to the regional tournament at Campbell County, and it was the year that we put on and enjoyed our first prom. The junior year ended on a note of unity with the presentation of rings to the future seniors. The ring was distinguishing characteristic that made our Class separate and distinct from all other groups and marked the entrance into our final stage as high school students. As seniors we shared together for the last time the enjoyment of the Pumpkin Prowl, the Christmas Dance, and the Mardi Gras. None of us can forget the appearance of the Town and Country as tables, chairs, and dance floor lay buried under mounds of confetti when the last dance was over. It was a year of remembering trig functions, Ohm's Law or learning about Shakespeare's Macbeth, and for those seniors who were looking ahead there was the added responsibility of filling out job applications or college forms. Despite the hard work with the books, however, we found time to run the most successful Campbell Lodge Festival in our school's history. Once again the lesson of working together which we learned as Freshmen paid dividends when we were seniors. Then just one month ago the presentation of a powerful drama by high school students. Father McDermott said that it could be done. Under his inspiration and guidance we did it- -THE POWER AND THE GLORY, one of the best of Covington Catholics perenially great plays . Finally we concluded the year on a note of recreation as we enjoyed together for the last time the junior-senior prom. These are the events of the past four years that stand out in my mind because they lead to the social, mental, and spiritual maturity of the individuals involved. They are experiences that taught us the necessity of depending on other people, our need for other people, and they taught us how to share together the joys and disappointments of others . By learning this we are able to push aside the barriers that keep us from communicating with one another and ultimately they have made us free. These events and experiences were available to us because our parents made them so, and because we have an interested faculty and administration here at Covington Catholic. We owe them much. On behalf of the senior class then, I would like to thank all of them for the time and energy they have spent to teach us that no man is an island. Thank you. Bill Hoppenjans June 8, 1966 124 Valediction: something said in parting; a farewell utterance. Ihave a duty to discharge as valedictorian. But before Ifulfill this responsibility, there are a few things I must say to you. I would like you to listen, I will not be long. I must first speak to you of the present. This is a milestone in our lives. They tell us, al- thoughfromwhere we stand, we cannotseemilestones. We must wait until we can look back on it. But we should take their word for it, for they know, and we should live these times as sincerely as we can, so that when we do look back, we will remember. But we can look back now and remember the last four years. They may not have been the hapu piest four years for some, or the most satisfying for others . But one thing is certain: they will be the most unforgettable for all of us. Our memories of these years will pay dividends forever. But the past is no substitute for the present. We must file our memories away and take them out only when the present can spare us for a few moments. I look forward to those few moments. I hope that I will be able to conjure up the emotional turmoil that I feel right now. I guess it is safe to saythat we are alla little confused at this moment. Even those of us who have decided what is to be their vocation in life have yet to determine just how they will achieve it. For the rest of us, we who have not yet encountered the plans which God had drawn up for us, this is a day full of uncertainty, framed in anxiety, and perhaps touched with fear. Our uncertainty is nothing to be alarmed of they tell us . But that is hard to accept because, being human, we need a place to anchor ourselves . When we are uncertain, when we drift, we ex- perience a taste of the punishment of Cain, a sort of placelessness, a sense of unbelonging to anything or anyone. But this will pass they say, and from this we should take hope. Like a rou- lette ball, we will ultimately find our niche. It may be painful and it may take a long time, but if we stick to it, He will not hide it forever. There is a certain anxiety, a worry, in this search, as well there should be. We are standing before a darkened doorway. We are compelled to cross the threshold because we know that we belong in the next room. But at the same time, the darkness frightens us. We would like to know what is there before we step. It would be comforting, but it is not to be. You see, across the threshold is adulthood, maturity, an awareness of a better life, a fuller existence. And we are not adults, nor are we fully mature, nor do we know of a better life. We can only gather up our courage, throw off the things of a child, and grow. Then, when we open our eyes again, the room will be bright and the doorway will be at our backs, and we will know that we have taken the step. We will never know just when or how it came about, because maturing is not a matter of the will; we will only know that the light is brighter, better suited for seeing what we really are. And that, that knowledge of what we really are, is the beginning. The fear. There is nothing to be afraid of they say, but I cannot help it, I have never graduated before . We cannot help knowing something of this world we are about to enter . We know that man can destroy entire cities with a single bomb; yet he persists in settling his quarrels by fighting. He can construct an artificial heart and perform other truly wondrous medical feats; yet some still suffer leprosy and smallpox and other archaic diseases. He builds supermarkets and res- taurants on every road in the land; yet his neighbor is still hungry. Man has given the good life to many; yet he refuses even the ordinary life to those whom he judges inferior. There are so many good things to live for; yet some refuse to live. They are the ones without a purpose. Some- times Ifeel that I have no purpose in this contradictory world. Maybe you feel the same way. I am afraid, as I look into the future, that there is no place there for me. If this is so, if there is no place, then this graduation is empty and meaningless. Honors or trophies or praise or to- morrow are all empty because they hold no meaning. But this graduation is not empty, for even in the most confused, twisted, and incomprehensible world, there is a place for me, for all of us. I believe that we can have those places if we try. I believe that we can change the world if we try. Maybe not greatly or for a long time, but we can try. That is important in life: that we try. We can give the world something that it needs: people who are brave enough or just plain stubborn enough to try to change the wrong things in it. So never let anyone tell you that your efforts are insignificant, that you are an unimportant creature. No creature with the purpose and the destiny of man can ever be insignificant. My valedictory speech is finished. There remains only to discharge my duty, to utter the valediction: Goodbye. M. Kreyling 5-28-66 I25 One Last Look Around the l26 School 127 128 '31 as
