WE, THE SENIOR CLASS, PROUDLY PRESENT the BLUEGRASS 1963 WE INVITE YOU TO HAVE A LOOK AROUND COVINGTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL COVINGTON, KENTUCKY THE BLUEGRASS STAFF: EDITOR-IN-CHIEF BUSINESS MANAGER H DANIEL HALL . CLASS EDITOR , , , ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES . , , ACADEMICS , ,,,,,,,,, MODERATOR , BRO .7 ., DONALD KEITH DANIEL HALL ,, TERRY GRAHAM XVAYNE BEIMESCH ,,,,,,,,,,,, DAVID SWEET . KEN THOMPSON, SM You know, itls a coincidence meeting you here because I have just completed a four year stay at Covington Catholic and found it to be most: pleasant. This school gives to so many the atmosphere of friendliness and the relationship of a family. Why, the people here roll out the welcome mat before you even get to the door, and the spirit created by school-wide participation in the various activities is one that is heralded throughout all of Northern Kentucky. I would like to share some of my experiences With you. So come in now and well HHAVE A LOOK AROUND SCHOOL. jIM JOE DEDICATION AUTO SKIDS, KILLS LUDLOW TWINS, such read the Sunday morning headlines 0f the E11- quirer, January 13. And thus in the Providence of God ended the earthly lives of two outstanding Colonels, James and Joseph Corbett. Two days before these headlines became a te- ality, Jim and Joe, along with the rest of the swim- ming team, had competed in a meet in Louisville, During one Of the meets Joe participated in the medleyl In the second last lap he got a Crampl He stopped, then started toward the side of the pool. The coach asked him if he would go on. Joe answered, Ill try Then completely exhausted he went on to finish third and hence add points for the team. This was the typical reaction of both Corbetts. And not only in swimming! As members of the Sodality, the Student Senate and the swim- ming team, they were seldom asked to do some- thing, but when that time arose they would always give it a try, no matter how difficult it might be. Even while they lay dying on the highway with a priest at their side, their last words were, Yes, Father. To describe them with superlatives would take too much space. In a word, they were truly Christ-like Gentlemen. We, the Seniors of 1963, in paying them special honor, pray that their example will guide us to become and remain, like them, real Christian men. We deem it a real honor to dedicate this book to Jim and Joe. Bishop of the Diocese of Covington THE MOST REVEREND RICHARD H. ACKERMAN G.S. Sp., D.D. RT. RT. RT. RT. RT. RT. RT. JANSEN, SM This yearbook is a record of one year in the life of a very small part of Christis Mystical Body. This may sound like a bold statement, and yet it should not sound that way for that is exactly what a Catholic school is or should be. In my position it is wonderful to behold how this life is constantly being built up by the many seemingly insignificant actions of teachers, students, parents, and members of the Covington Catholic family. We have all seen most clearly how Jim and Joe Corbett contributed to this life of Christ in Covington Catholic. Perhaps it was only after their death that we suddenly realized just how much they had given to the building up of Christls life here, As you look through this yearbook in future life remembeir how each little event be it humorous, serious, painful or joyous had a part in this building up of Christ in the school. However, also from my vantage point can be seen the insidious efforts of evil to tear down the life of Christ in the schools Like all evil it is hidden and in many cases not known to exsit even by those who unloosed it by gossip, intrigue, etc. And yet we know that in God's providence even this will work toward the eternal sharing in Christ's life and love. Pray that as your life closes you may look back and suddenly realize only then how much you con- tributed to the building up of Christ's life in the Church, your own family, your Parish, your com- munity, and your place of work. With this thought in mind the department under the leader- ship of Fr. Heitzman went about its work The freshman religion teachers, Fr. Evis- ton and Fr. Jasper, spent much time on Faith and the virtues in general. The chief material studied this year was the first and second commandments, and the sacra- ments of Baptism, Confession, and Com- munion. This gave the freshman a good background and an idea of what they were to expect in their further studies. The sophomore classes furthered their knowledge When they studied the Life of Christ. They saw how Christ fulfilled His promises and instituted the sacraments. While teaching of Christ, Fri Egart explained the Mass and the connection of the Eucharist. With the idea of being able to explain your religion Fri McDermott set up two special projects. In the first he assigned to each student a section of the text, they were then required to teach this section to their class and answer any questions that might arise. The second project was to record on tape the life of Christ. Each of the four Classes took one of the Gospels. To prepare the Seniors for the world Fr. Heitzman and Fr. Behringer taught the sacrament of Marriage. This was rather im- portant because most of them will be mar- ried and raise a family thus spreading the religion to their children. MATH DEPARTMENT Mr. Payne vcry ably led the math department with excellent assistance from FL XWaIter, a veteran of eleven years of teaching at CCH, and Mr. Paul Geiser, a graduate of Villa Madonna College. Due to the evident importance of mztth in the modern world it was taught in all divisions. Mr, Payne taught Senior Math, Algebra II, and Aigebra I, stressing the importance of the graph, Fr. Walter taught Plane Geometry to the sophomores and stressed the importance of the Pythagorean Theory. Mr. Geiser taught the freshmen Algebra I by illustrations of his famous Venn Diagrams 65 UNIVAC DEPARTMENT Univac is a department of Covington Catholic from which the Catholic high schools of Covington receive finished reports such as report cards, schedules, permanent records, class lists, and tuition billing. Our department goes to great pains in selecting business courses that will offer the finest results. Such courses as Business Law, Book- keeping, and Business Mathematics are being taught to students so that they will have a workable knowledge of the world around them. Mr. Schulte, Who studied at Xavier, is the chairman of the Department. He is backed up by such capable personnel as Fr. Weber, the treasurer of the school, and Mr. Gerstner a recent grad- uate of Xavier. The business department selected Jerry Landwehr to represent Covington Catholic in Youth Week which was sponsored by the City of Covington. Jerry was a city commissioner at the council meeting. He well represented our school by bringing up problems and causing much controversy. 69 70 The major goal of the English Department for the past year was to instill in the students an interest in read- ing and writing, This was accomplished to a large extent by the students making use of paperbacks. The SRA reading program was also used, The students were en- couraged to make proper use of the library. The writing of themes, one of the most important elements in any English program was also promoted in the course of the school year. Visual and Audio aids were also used to help in the understanding and appreciation of some of the Shake- speare plays, the Novels, and various selections of poetry. To help the students acquire a critical eye in viewing movies, the English Department sponsored the movie appreciation project. The movies were viewed, then discussed and analyzed. For the future year7 the new year, the new program will lead to emphasize composition and much reading, Through this program it is hoped to develop in our stu- dents at least two of the famous R's : Reading and Write 111gv ENGLISH DEPARTMENT A CHRISTMAS TREAT FOR ME?? Brother John McGowan who taught the seniors Physics Will lave this summer to teach at the University of Puerto Rico Brother Bill, the Biology instructor, used visual aids and biological experiments with much success in his classes, Brother Howard taught the juniors, perhaps, the most dreaded of all high school subjects, chemistry. This summer Brother Howard is taking Quantitative Organic Chemistry at UD. The Science Department continues to make mh'nnces in teaching methods and presentation of material. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT 72 '5 Inspired by the agerold adage, 'iif you age stdnding still, you are moving backwards, Brother Ed led this year's Social Studies Department info more and varied frontiers. Brother Ed taught American History, which heilikes very much, to the Juniors and World History to the Freshmen Mr. Bkamim taught Freshman World History, while Mr. Hackett taught American History to the Junior A Classi Features which enlightened response to History were an excellent reading program, use of maps, and cxpiimzltion 0f the effects which geography has upon history. Once again this year the history students showed excellent results on all tests, which were standardized. SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Fr. Behringer, a graduate of Catholic University, headed the language department this yeari Father taught French to the Juniors and helped establish French as a lasting language in the school. Along with French, two old standard languages, Latin and German, were continued.- Freshmen became familiar with Latin through Bro. Dan and wars. The Sophomores furthered their study with Fr. Schaffer. It was said by some that Fr. Schaffer was teaching his classes the use of 21 seige tower so they could counteract Bro. Dads waist German was taught by Miss Hum, the only female member of the faculty. She came in on Tuesdays and Thursdays for two hour periods. Everyone appresiated her presence; it seemed to brighten the day. The Physiml Education Depart- ment consisted of Mr. Robert Naher and Mr. Roger Tiemm, both gmduntes of Covington Catholic and former basketball stars. Mr. Nuber, being chairman, in- troduced for the first time a physical fitness test. This program consisted of endurance7 stability, and all around coordination of the body. It was administered to all freshmen and some upperclassmen. Mr, Tieman centered his instruo tions in the classroom. He took the different parts of the body, their uses and relation to other parts. He explained how to improve your health and keep it that way by exercise, good food, and rest. Both Mrl Naber and Mr. Tiemzm attended the University of Louisville where they are still known for their outstanding play On the basketball court. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT 75 n e m s s h c r e d n . U The homeroom Of Mr. BrOCkman, 9A, had a wonderful and successful year. It all started when, in the first quarter, the Spirit Banner was awarded to the 9A boys. It was won, of course, by the high spirit shown by some boys like Mike Burke and Tom Egan who were very active in the intramural program. These boys and others like Mike Dacey and Terry Carl were also active in Freshman bas- ketball. They helped the team have a successful season. Again in the third quarter the 9A boys came through and were awarded the Spirit Banner. In this quarter the big factor was the Bishop's Relief Fund in which 9A came in first place. Each boy gave all he could, not because he was forced to but because of his generosity. The Spirit Banner was also won by boys like Dennis Carney and Bob Benson Who held usual high averages, The homeroom was also represented on the Freshman baseball team by boys like Terry Carl, and Jerry Collins. In Varsity Baseball Mrt Brockman's boys were also represented by Tom Egan who was a fine catcher. All in all the year for the 9A astronauts was successful because of the high spirit shown in most every school activity. One reason was the friendly attitude of every boy to each other. They were willing to do things for others, if not out of friendship, then for the purpose of bettering the homeroom. Because of this high spirit shown throughout the year by each boy of 9A, the homeroom was awarded a free day on Friday, May 24. But not much has been said about Mr. Brockman, He urged us forward but never forced us to do anything. His go-get-lem attitude was a source of inspiration to all the 9A boys. It can Surely be Said that the astronauts have had a very success ful year. Our homeroom gave up free time on Saturdays to come clown and sand off desks. We also had a May altar this year which was erected by Tom Kordenbrock, Bill Luck- man, and Denny Meyrose, and which received some compliments from the teachers. At the Campbell Lodge Festival we contributed by having the coin toss booth. Not only at the Festival but throughout the whole year wherever help was needed, we were always giving a lending hand We also had several boys on the various teams in the school. We won the freshman intramural basketball trophy. Homeroom 10A, better known as the ADVENTURERS under the leadership of Mrt Schulte, can once again proudly proclaim that they have had another successful year 115 members of the Covington Catholic student body. As the weeks passed, the homeroom became involved in many extra activities, the first of which was entirely redecorating the homeroom. Of course, we had to sponsor a dance to cover the expenses of the paint and the draperies After the room was beautified, we then participated in the Campbell Lodge Festivai. Working together as 2L team 10A finished with a respectable third place in homeroom competition. After this the running of the homeroom was very smooth until the deaths of Jim and Joe Corbett. Jim, being the president of the homeroom, was its source of inspiration. But the ADVENTURERS ventured on to win the second quarter Spirit Banner. A first place in intramural volleyball and baseball, and 21 second place in ping-pong speak well for the sports in the homeroom. There were also several ADVENTURERS on the school basketball, baseball, and tennis teams; and amongst the activities, the Sodality, Speech and Debate, and the JPC were represented; In finishing the fourth quarter, the homeroom again placed 2L first for the Spirit Banner. But Louisville Westport High had their own plans and took our crown from us. We had to be satisfied with the Runners-up trophy Father McDermott, the head coach of the team since its first season four years ago, has done courageous work in promoting this sport in the school. In late October sixty-eight students tried out for the team but only twenty-fivc made it. The team started out the year with decisive Victories, but ended the season with a 6 and 6 record. The trip to Louisville resulted in a couple of costly losses. But stem determination was in the eyes of the Colonel Swimmers at the State Meet Backed by a great contingent of routers, mostly seniors, they fought as hard as they could. By the time of the final event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay, it was zinybody's meet, If Highlands won this last event, they would take the crown. The same could be said for the Colonels. If neither of these teams won, then Westpott would be the champs.
