I 965: SELF EVALUATIO Early in the school year, the administration, faculty, clerical staff, and a committee of students were busy With the job of accrediting Covina High School. They were required to consider the school from every perspec- tive. They gathered the opinions of everyone connected with the school as to the facilities that it offered. Colleges require that a high school be accredited before they will accept the transcripts or verify the diplomas of the graduating seniors. Therefore the process of accred- itation is a complex one that is of great importance to the A guest SP?ak?f SPQH14-S to the faculfif Concem- students as well as the faculty or administration. mg accreditation process. The four major committees filled out questionnaires sent to Covina High by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges CWASCD. Questions ranged in scope from what the students thought of the counseling staff to how the administration felt about the upkeep of the campus. Questionnaires were turned in, and a complete report was made in the form of a 150 page pamphlet. This report was turned over to a staff of school administrators from other districts who then came to Covina High for a three day visit. During this time they observed the campus life, the teaching methods, the edu- cational equipment in use, the facilities offered to the students , and any other aspect of school life that they felt was pertinent to the accreditation process. They also asked questions of stu- dents and employees on the campus. At the end of this three day period they submitted to the WASC a report about the school recommending it for a one to five year accreditation. Not only did the accreditation cover the educational side of teaching but it also extend- ed to the P,E. classes fabovej the nurses office Qfar rightj, and the clerical staff frightj. 30
