' If-fs! 1 J y1fY wf 13' af' ,1 ff . file' eff' COVINA HIGH SCHOOL The Tr1p to Boulder Dam HI: tr1p made by the combmed physics classes to Boulder Dam on March 9 and 10 wnll always remam one of the outstandmg events of the school year of 1933 1934 Mr Ross suggestron that an overmght tr1p be made to see the project was eagerly accepted and a large ITIHJOIIIY of the students IH the physxcs classes accompan1ed by a few of the faculty left one Frldav afternoon to see Boulder Dam The tr1p was full of 1nterest1ng events but the rmpressxon made on our m1nds by the great dam over shadowed ev ery thlng else Betty van Cunkel proved to be a rather dangerous passenger accordmg to Mr Ross In her great joy caused by leavlng her home state for the first t1me Glnkel nearly upset the automoblle as the state lme was crossed After every one had regamed h1s seat II was dlscovered that the handle of the door had been pulled off 1n the confuslon Many students went mto another state for the first time but no other drastlc results were reported The last stretch of the road before the auto camp was reached almost caused us to glve up hope of arrrvlng at our destlnatlon Nevertheless we arr1ved dusty and trred shortly after nme Although the truck seemed to be far behlnd the ladtes seemed not to be the waltmg kmd and went to bed as soon as possxble The group of cold wmd beaten boys arr1ved sometlme after mld mght All they were capable of saymg was I want mv bed Very soon all were asleep- and all too soon vv ere up and ready to contmue The twenty seven boys who rode on the truck were repald for therr dxs comfort by some extra experxences They were somewhat crowded and also exposed to the heat and cold Nevertheless they found a number of ways of amuslng themselves Tell1ng jokes teasxng good natured Harvey Bolmg and star ga71ng were among thexr d1vers1ons The truck was not able to proceed very speedlly and several tlmes some of the boys got off and ran awhlle A thev slowly progressed to the top of a long hlll just beyond Baker a great deal of excxtement was created by the report that they were nearly out of gas A gasol1ne statlon was reached m t1me and a catastrophe was avolded Probably the most memorable of these boys experrences was the removal of the rather occurred Many beautrful and mterestlng slghts were seen by the group The mult1 colored desert especlally at sunset and sunrlse was gorgeous A number of curtous rel1cs were mspected ln towns at whxch we stopped Especlally memor able was the attract1veness of Boulder Cxty The green lawns and spotlessly whlte stucco bl1lld1IlgS made If seem truly l1ke an oasls Its outstandmg feature for many was the huge dlnmg hall where we were served dellclous food Most assuredlv we came home wlth our ears eyes and m1nds full of unforgettable memor1es 4 I 632' T I 3 l I I ' s ' 1 ' 1 L I Y! 3 ! , . J A xr A ,vii IQ - . 1 1' v e I v 1 Q 4, e F ., A ,A 12 1,1 I THE CARDINAL Semor D1tch Day ENIOR DITCH DAY What a tnme we had a day that we senlors vslll never forget We met 1n front of the hlgh school on that cold dr177ly February mornmg and of course we had to walt for a few late comers Qmcludlng the Y M C A truckj When we finally assembled and both trucks arrlved boys and g1rls all scrambled 1nto the trucks and off we headed for Blg Pxres After a long cold drrve the gates of the playground opened to the bunch who had thrown thexr studles to the wmds for one bllssful day Then began one round of snowball fights toboggan Slldlflg sleigh r1d1ng and hllilllg fol lowlng one rxght after another Hunter and Goodell seemed to shme rn the snowball fights After lunch most of us danced ln the bug hall where a fire was blazlng Some of the more talented seniors afforded us wlth muslc whlch brought a real Covlna splrxt mto the crowd Mnss Taylor seemed to attract all of the attentxon of Ross Wllllams and can they dance' There on the dance Hoor Jack Howard seemed first to reallze how attractive blondes are now look at them Here s a t1p for the mcommg semors lf you are ever broke pawn your senlor rmgs because they worked to secure toboggans for some of the faxrer sex Mr Gauldln seemed to be expert at manlpulatmg a toboggan for no one was nearly as successful as he He made the longest tr1p that day and recelved a huge snowball 1n hls eye as a reward Platt ran hlm a close second wxth h1s Llghtnln The toboggans were the most favored sport of the day but some found other thmgs almost as much fun for 1nstance the bully snow light Chuck and Bee started Some couples vlslted he anxmal farm but they were terrxbly dls appomted for all they found vsere some foxes and snow dogs QThey ex pected lions and txgers Q GltflI1gS and Runkle got a great klck out of h1tch1ng rxdes and espec1ally 1n good lookmg Lmcolns All good thmgs must end so rn the afternoon the trucks agaln beckoned us and what a send off we recelved from the lnhabrtantsl Snowballs galore' Even those dldn t dampen our SPIIIIS however lt was l1ke a three r1ng c1rcus golng home 1n one corner Sam Barrmger and Clayton Compton were stag1ng a good 1m1tat1on of what a wrestllng match ought to be we were all the v1ct1ms ln another corner Harvey vxas frlghtenlng poor Ellle nearly to death wlth h1s lmpersonatlon of Klng Kong ln st1ll another carner Roy W1nder was buslly proposlng to anyone who he thought mlght have or mlght mherxt a few thousand dollars w1th1n the next few months Dear Dear what a man After a few flat tlres as the only mlshaps we rolled lnto dear ole Covlna but lf was a unammous concluslon that we had had swell chaperons swell compamons and one Swell day IS . n V 1 , .
