THE FALL PRELUDE Like a bold plaid, Fall descends upon the scene and quietly vanishes the green simplicity of summer. With its somber tran- quility and panoramic boldness, it casts a magic spell over the earth that settles in a gossamer mist, the frost. His autumnal obligation fulfilled, he sets the stage for the winter drama and silently steals away. 6 . f A, B, C,'s . . . . . . ANTICS, BOOKS, CHATTER If one were to look in on the students assembling for back to school chatter, he might see scenes iust like these. The students often gather on the foot- ball tield to discuss new textbooks and old teachers or on the steps to give opinions of their new class- mates seen in the halls. Our boys, who take pride in their crew cuts, take time between classes to comb these curly locks for their favorite girls. Only as students work out their schedules, com- plain because their lockers haven't yet been issued, and race to be first in lunch line, do we realize that school has really be- gun. Don't be a dead head, vote tor the redhead Keep your spirit up - vote Ghost When the day ot election speeches tinally arrived, both presidential candi- dates met students at the door and shook hundreds of hands in hopes of so- liciting one more vote. An anxious student body awaited the results which indicated that Jim Beckley had vvon the election in one of the clos- est races in Coventry's history. Sparked by a new team spir- it, the Comets produced such outstand- ing men as Wiiey Bailey, an all-metro, all-district member. The capable coaching staff included: Art Pardee -head coach and assistants- Harry Welch, Dave Goodyear, and Buck McCoy. The two Cox's - Bill and Paul, served their SA-55 teams as managers. To fill the shoes of former varsity leaders is a task many girls would be willing to undertake. The cheerleaders are actually am- bassadors of good will from Coventry and we are proud of the courtesy they have extended to visiting schools and their cheering sections. We hope that the same winning school spirit that has been a part of Coventry in the past years as shown in the student body, the cheerleaders, and the teams, will continue to shine through in the future. MAJORETTES Our dancing malorettes have been the icing on the cake for the T954 edition of the Marching Band They are left to rightj K Pav kov S Vale N Spurgeon J Santschi J Irvin S DeMita ancll Kelfer Their desire to be individuals motivated their request to be named The Comettes hoping to set a precedent and tradition for fu ture high stepping hopefuls The season opened with the clash of the fanfare that set the pace for their twirls and swirls as they made their way down the cleat- marked field. The cheers of the fans parents and stu- dent body alike inspired them to give their many precisioned performances. Since their clever adaptation of Rosalie and Muskrat Ram- ble were particular favorites of the student body, the numbers were repeated several times. Going through the intricate marching routines while trying to concentrate on scads of snappy music means hours of work for Coventry's diligent band members. Long before school opens, we see these musi- cal maestros trailing to the football field to begin their new season of music and marches. Those first rehearsals are always discouraging as the lines weave in snake-like curves, and the horns blow out flat, sours notes. As time goes on, however, we begin to notice a remarkable improvement in the entire appearance of the band. The lines straighten, the horns blow in harmony, the steps begin to fit the music, and by the time football season rolls around, Mr. Herron has once more turned out a championship band. .BRRR BRRR b - ' ' A Pracrice Session Before Showtime! E OPEN HOUSE ACTIVITIES. . . Parents as well as students take time out for a conference period with Coven- try's obliging faculty members, Mrs. Schi- avone and Mrs. Pack- an. Under the watchful eye of Mrs. Biles, Judy Miller, Adele Eisenberg, and Ann Nicodemus demonstrate the whys and wherefores of dissecting a crayfish. Their viewers, who are hardly familiar with such exhibi- tions, provide an interest- ed and fascinated audi- ence. ACQUAINT PARENT WITH TEACHER Bill Hollandftongue in cheek-appears to be leading a chemis- try experiment as part of the Open House activities. He is ably assisted by fellow-chemists Frank Huffman, Carol Chad- bourne, and AI Shears. JUNIOR AND SENIOR Y-TEENS . . . ...GlRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS At the beginning of the year, the Senior Y-Teen Cabinet, headed by Jean Santschi, president, initiated a program for the year with the theme: Tie in with your country, your community, your school, and yourself. At Coventrys traditional winter formal Cthis year named The Starlight Swirlj students danced to the music of Chic Hackett's orchestra. Jean Santschi and Wiley Bailey were crowned king and queen by Dorothy Woodall and Dave Baker. For the yeai s service proiect, a group of Senior Y-Teens volunteered their free services to Barberton Citizen's Hospital. Climaxing Y-Teen activities in the entire area was the All-City Y-Teen Formal. A king candidate was chosen from each high school in this district, and promi- nent youth supervisors saluted a Y-Teen king who was announced at the dance. This year's formal was called the Crystal Ball and was held in Akron U's new gym- nasiurn. With Donna Gang as president, the Junior Y-Teen girls planned a successful dress-up dance in December with Janis Barnes and Carl Exler reigning as Queen and King of the Peppermint Parade. Since it is the beginning of a freshman girl's social life, this dance was closed to Juniors and Seniors. This group of Y-Teens held many inspirational and educational meetings with such guest speakers as: Rev. Steese from Lockwood E. U. B. church, Assist- ant Minister J. Cooper from Lakeview Church of Christ, and Miss Arrants from the Y. W. C. A. in Akron. To conclude the year's activities, the Junior Y-Teens held a spring dance which was open to the entire school for a full evening of enioyment. nr!
