Class Prophecy Just as I was f1n1sh1ng my art1cle for Workers AIISG, the dxctaphone buzzer sounded and my secretary and travel1ng campan1on, Irene Laughery, 1nformed me that a transocean1c phone call had been placed for me The telephone operator who to my surpr1se was my old classmate Audrey North, connected me w1th the Waldorf Astor1a, now owned by Chuck Engelman who told me busmess was very slow, especlally smce Dave Craytor, the modern vers1on of John L Lewxs, had called a strxke of all uramum mlners, causmg atom1c traff1c to be conslderably slowed down Chuck was orgamzmg a reun1on of our old graduatlng class of 1950 and wanted to know 1.f Irene and I would not1.fy our many classmates who were also 1n Europe Irene, l1ke all good secretarles, hstenmg ln on the extens1on phone, came rush1ng 1nto my off1ce and we 1mmed1ately began to plan Evangelme Dadoly, now a teacher ln her nat1ve Alban1a, and J1m Bland, ambassador to Lower Slobovla were 1mmed1ately not1f1ed and Jxm saxd he would have Roll1e Woodford, skxpper of the Flylng Washtub, come by and p1ck us up W were sorry to hear that Jxm Bloom, v1ce presldent of the Afrxcan M1ss1onar1es Assoclatlon, could not attend the reun1on, but he d1d tell us that Norma Brown and V1rg1n1a Rose also w1th the A M A , would be on the Fly1ng Washtub when lt set sall for New York After a del1ght:ful crulse on Roll1e's shxp flncldently h1s chxef steward 1S Harold Nebgenl we saxled 1nto New York Harbor, and agaln set foot on Amerlcan so1l The customs offxclals, Jxm Cooper and Bob Sarver, checked our baggage and 1n the course of the conversat1on they told us that Admlral Brady Hmzman had salled nn the mght before There was a number of people wa1t1ng for tax1es, but Ted Schn1d erman, a drxver for the Cope and Cormany Cab Company, recogmzed us and offered to dr1ve our party to the Wal dorf When we reached Fffth Avenue Patrolman Roy Walter was trylng to clean up a trafflc Jam caused by none other than Dee Sholley, who had stalled her convertxble at a busy 1ntersect1on Dee only stopped long enough to say Hello, as she was late for a luncheon date w1th Rodney, who IS now a famous art1st When we reached the Waldorf all were met by Sandra McFarren ed1tor of the T1mes ' accompan1ed by her ace photographer, Joe Bechter and of course that great feature wrxter, Nancy Haas Sonn1e promlsed to Jom us as soon as we had reglstered w1th the Waldorf desk clerk, Art R1dgley He told us that Anme Irv1n and Norma Keys, now teachers at Coventry H1gh, and Arlene Kxphnger, owner of K1ppy's Drxve Inn, had regxstered earller and were now tourlng Radxo C1ty Muslc Hall Wlth Jack DeLong, an offxcxal gulde When we rejomed Sonme she sa1d she had Just phoned of Bottoms Up Chet Burnett, busmess manager of the show, took us backstage after the performance and we spent a dehghtful hour talkmg over old t1mes w1th Bob McCrockl1n, Sh1rley Hughes, Bev Lee, and Gene Morrls, the stars Leona Dobbms, who des1gns those stunn1ng colffures of Sh1rley's, told us Lowell Thomas, the famous tenor, had g1ven a concert at the theatre the day before, and muslc cr1t1c, Ann Wmkler, thought he gave the most br1ll1ant performance of the year Sonme sa1d we hadn't really seen New York untxl we had been to the new Em p1re State Bu1ld1ng wluch was d6S1gTled by archltect, Betty Freder1ck, and bu1lt by the Jones and Kovac Construc t1on Company Glory Ann Sm1th has a lovely Tea Shoppe on the skyscraper's roof and elevator operator, Maxme Hoppe, offered to take us up The Tea Shoppe IS very beautiful and the lovely waltresses, Joyce Rlchter, Cath1e We1gandt and Joan Bulgrm looked slmply stunmng 1n the costumes des1gner Sue Barlow had created Sonme suggested we walk down and stop to v1s1t some of our old classmates who have offlces 1n the bu1ld1ng Donna Warren, Dr Ross Taylor's recept1on1st, told us Ross was downstalrs at Bob Cox's Barber Shop We stopped at Bob's shop and d1scovered Carol Huff, man1cur1st and Roy Bartoe, the shoeshme boy, argu1ng over a case Lawyer B111 Palmer had been talkmg about earher ln the day I suggested stoppmg to v1s1t B111 but Carol told me he and h1s secretary, Jackle Snyder, had gone to the Court House That other famous Engelman brother, Jerry, had planned a party for the Class of 1950 at the Engelman Stork Club, and as we entered, the hat check g1rl, Ruth Shallcross, told us the floor show was Just about to beg1n The head wa1ter B111 Morrls took us to our table wh1ch was r1ght next to the one occup1ed by those famous coaches D1ck Rlpley of Army and Larry Herman of Notre Dame Jack Neumeyer, the master of ceremomes, stepped to the mlcrophone and announced that the program for the evenmg would be composed ent1rely of members of the Class of Flfty Barbara McCrady, vocal 1St, Wlth M1lton Bower and h1s Awful E1ght, opened the program M11t,S orchestra IS composed of Ruth Burk holder, Harvey Eckberg, Don Oglesby, Phylhs Mxtchell, Phyll1s Walker, Barbara Sellers and featurmg J1m Cunnlngham on the bag p1pe Jan Horton who does a h1lar1.ous novelty number, was called back for three en cores Jan IS w1th R K O and had to leave for Hollywood as soon as she f1n1shed her number No n1ghtclub IS complete wlthout a chorus l1ne and the R1chettes f1ll the b1ll qu1te well Th1s group, composed of Marlene Cox Jean Wetzel, Jane M1ller, and Bunchle Bower has been voted the best prec1s1on group 1n the U S All too soon the evemng was over, and the Class of F1fty agaxn parted to go the1r separate ways At LaGuard1a F1eld where Irene and I were to take a transocean1c a1rl1ner back to France, we sald goodby to the fnends who had come to see us off P1lot Bob Langenbach started up the huge eng1nes and soon we were w1ng1ng our way over the blue Atlantxc W1th Sh1rley Werntz, the lovely stewardess, we dlscussed the many careers of our former classmates, w1th whom we shared so many happy hours at dear old Coventry Hlgh . , . . , . .
