VARSITY BASKETBALL Don Welever, Bud Marks, Capt. lim Provence, Harold Ley, Earl Valentine, lohn Buck, Bill McKenna, Harold Anderson, Morrie Williams, Bill Miller, Al Rollins, Coach Miller. Coventry's team was small but aggressive this year. Their lack of height was a definite handicap throughout the season, We won ten and lost nine games including two losses to Canton Timken and to Canton St. Iohns. High spots of the year were the one point win over Springfield there, and a one point loss to Ellet here. Both were very good ball clubs. Among other close games were the Stow game, which we lost 22-24, at Stow, and the 38-40 game which Kent State took from us at home. Standouts on the team were Hank Provence, a forward, elected honorary captain and All-Metropolitan forward: and Morrie Williams, another fast, scrappy, diminutive forward. Don Welever at center, Iohn Buck, and either Bill McKenna or Harold Ley at guards, made up the starting lineup. Much credit must be given Bud Marks, Harold Anderson, and Bill Miller for good relief jobs in several games when the Varsity regulars departed for the showers via the personal foul route. It was a fast aggressive ball club that had to depend on clever ball handling and superior basket shooting to win any games, but too often this was not enough to offset the advantage of height which other teams had. Coventry football hopes suffered a severe jolt when three lettermen took defense jobs and did not return to school and a fourth was declared ineligible after the first game. We defeated Orrville 19-0 on the first game of the year at Orrville. Stow then became the first team to defeat the Comets on our home field since 1937. The score was 7-ll. After that the Barberton Reserves were defeated 13-0. Then came a visit to our arch rivals, Springfield, and we won 6-0. Neither team had much advantage as play was confined between the 30 yd. lines after a 2nd quarter drive netted the Comets a score. Kent State came to Coventry next and w 19 7 I on - . t was the first time Kent football team had ever beaten Coventry and it was accomplished while their Coach Mr. Von Hyning was in the hospital. Norton then took our measure in the mud by 13-0. It was a terrific battle but the Panthers couldn't be stopped. We tackled Mighty Ellet at Ellet and even though the experts pre- dicted an Ellet romp, the Comets rnade goal line stand after stand, and with 10 seconds left to play, took the ball on our four inch line, and with it the ball game 7-6. Greensburg then got revenge for the last four years by winning 12-6 in our last game of the year. All in all it was not as successful a year as past years have been, but ghe Eoys won fouruand lost four which makes them an average football team y t e azzi ratem system of picking championship teams.
