MR. ROBERT ERWINE Akron University M. A. and A. B. The democratic way of life and those ideals which have characterized the America of the past are now under vicious attack by foreign arms without and within. The successful defense of these rights and ideals requires more than raising huge armies and navies. It requires more than laying down one's life for his country: it requires that in every thought, in every action, in every deed, each of us proclaim to the world what it means to be an American. The future of our democracy rests in the hands of the young people who are now students in our public schools. There is a challenge to the school to help fit them for the part they are to play in life. They must learn to live the democratic way of life. They must realize that they are not only studying the history of the past, but that they are seeing his- tory made, and are preparing to take their part in making the history of the future.
