Christ pre-eminentn in front of stu- dents, faculty, staff and the sur- rounding community, the TARTAN staff dedicates the 1987 volume to Dr. Donovan Graham. As Dean of External Programs and professor of Education, Dr. Graham has continually exhibited his strong commitment to our Lord as he trains young men and women to critically analyze themselves in light of their devotion to Christ. Dr. Graham earned his BA. in Math and Secondary Education from the University of Northern Colorado where at the end of his junior year he married a young woman named Wilma. He went on to earn a Master's Degree in Coun- seling and Guidance from New Mexico State University where he also received a Doctorate in Coun- seling and Educational Psychology. Dr. Graham, we the Covenant community take our hat off to you as professor, family man, mentor, and friend. May God continually bless you, your family, and those you touch in the years to come. 1 , il ZX Dedication U .. rw ff S-- '- 2 A 5 S 'za -self r Presld nt S QSSHQQ Dr. Martin Essenburg - -..Y .-. .. .-... .. .,,.. As I reflect upon the past year, I think of i many special events, such as convocation, the soc- ? cer team's regional championship, Madrigal Din' Q ners, the spring musical play, Day I for a long time. of Prayer, grad uation, and even the presidential roast. Those 5 events were outstanding and will be remembered ' But the year included a great deal of ordinary activity as well-daily classes, chapel services, meals in the great Hall, studying in the library, talking with friends-and these everyday activities were shaping all of us. It is good for us to remem- ber that and to resolve again to live all of life in praise to our Savior and King. An old hymn asks the Lord to fill every part of our lives with praise, so that we may proclaim His being and His ways, and so that we may experience fellowship with the Lord in all the winding steps of life. May the Lord be pleased to fill us with gratitude and praise. It has been a most enjoyable experience to share many days with you at Covenant College, and now as our paths separate, I pray that the Lord will go with you and that you will honor and praise Him all the days of your lives. President's Pagef3 4f'l'heme The Holiness of God is an awe- some and often fearful concept. He is the all good, all loving and all just God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob who lives today. He is the God who has conse- crated His people to himself. Through His all redeeming grace and mercy He has called us from darkness into the light. It is the hope of the TARTAN staff that each time we open this annual we would be reminded of who we should be and what we should do as Christians in a watching world where Satan is seeking to devour our very souls. May we keep in our minds the work of Christ upon the cross and our commitment to Him. Amen. fi ,WM ., V r .4 fry P 1 , 6 'Theme 1, we X I X , 'Elf--. ,,K, 0+ . It is our job to carry his praises to all the ends of the earth. Of this mandate we have no choice. In these years of seemingly turbulent times in Christ's Church we would do well to look at His humanity for how He liv- ed in this world as an example, par excellence. We must proclaim Jesus Christ in all our words and deeds, keeping in mind at all times God's uncompromising Holiness. To this end, may we, in the totality of our lives, do all for the glory of God. ...gp----f.-.W H13 l w l l , ,K in ei ,M ' fl lx l is X ' r X 'I 4 , ,,, 53 Q . ' 1, ,I QL v . The holi- day decorations, the seasonal music by the Madrigal singers and musicians, and the food of the feast set those who attended into the seasonal Christmas spirit. Highlights included the presentation of the Boar's head, a jester, a tenor soloist, a recorder performer, and a Christmas Carol sing-a-long. The varied program was desigend to appeal to a broad audi- ence, and included works by Wagner, I-Iumperdinck, Schubert, and Stravinsky. The fifty-five piece orchestra, conducted by Dr. Monroe, was composed of our own students, community musicians, professional musicians from the Chattanooga Symphony Grchestra, and stu- dents from colleges in the area. In the second portion of the pro- gram, over ninety musicians, including singers, joined in a bona fide community effort performing Sound of Music, Shenandoah, and America the Beautiful. 25 Phil Keagg and Bryan Duncan The Covenant Community was entertained and inspired by Phil Keaggy, a guitarist and contemporary singer. Bryan Duncan, who gave an energy filled concert, opened for Keaggy in the Great Hall. N i al A if Michael Card Michael Card, a Christian Contempo- rary singer, came and gave an outstanding concert in the Spring of 1987. His mello sound and interesting lyrics brought out many people to hear him. His concert emphasized the birth of Christ and His life on earth. Card's testimony was an encouragement to all. Michael Cardf27 the GARAGE Joriliiiv LA Early in the fall, Covenant students Jon Libby, Mark Howell, David Rayday and Alex Kang formed the band called the Garage.
