'Ally QE ' !l Dr. Hurley, It is an honor and privilege to be able to speak on behalf of the student body, recognizing you for the talents you,ve shared with us these past five years. We've appreciated your abilities in teaching and counseling. You've been used by God as an instrument in equiping many of us with the armour of God that we would be, Rooted and grounded in love Eph. 3:7. Your ears have been open to many of our cries and you've always responded in an understanding and empathetic manner. Those of us you've touched have seen love acting in a way that increases our knowledge and depth of insight. Many times we were able to dis- cern what was best, so that we could be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, because of the things youlve led us to. We'll miss you. Your friendship will be cherished. We pray that the Lord will continue to bless you and keep you and cause His face to shine upon you in your new position. In the capital of a tiny European country a tender love story unfolds. As in a similar story of many generations ago, there exists strife and warring factions. Our Montagues and Capulets are the American and Russian Ambassadorial families set in that period of time known as the Cold War. Most people who really love the sport stay in it not just for years but for decades. There is room for everyone, the young, old and even the blind. QA 24 year old blind graduate of Florida State took second place in the men's medium weight black belt division in this year's tournamentl. Does Judo reflect honor the Lord? That all depends. For those who just want to collect trophy hardware, no. Those who understand the basic principles of Judo tmaximum efficiency, minimum effortg the use of an opponent's strengh to one's own advantage, etc.l, the sport reflects some important attributes of God tHis use of weakness to humble the stron, and His use of an opponent's course of action to glorify His namej. The unity of the club in all it's activities tThe fall demon- strations, grub day repair jobs, and the Spring Tourna- mentl plus the prayer support, one for another, has meant a great deal to us all. The club is together this year - in our own tournament fWith a total turnout of 55 competitorsj, we picked two firsts tFrank Sexton and Karen Pettitl, a third tMarcus Flowerj and a fourth tPhil Bordersj. All in all, the Lord has truly blessed us this year and we are looking forward to the next. Dr. Keister A X S 'Q 4 41 I 2 ' jg 1 ' U .,. 'Qw- sq! Ag ,1 -q L giv- W? In the center of this panel is a seven-sided figure inscribing a blue background on whcih the Hebrew characters for Jehovah are superposed. The lower part of the panel shows figures of plants, fish and other created beings. Adam and Eve are shown at the bottom, in silhouette looking upward. On the right side of the panel is a representation of the sun and above it are the altars of Cain and Abel with a flame burning brightly on Abel's altar. Top center shows an angel driving Adam and Eve in shame from the garden. The second panel begins the covenant theme. At the lower right of this panel are the rainbow, dove and ark which represent God's covenant with Noah, In the center of the panel, lower part, God's covenant with Abraham is represented by Abraham, staff in hand, viewing the stars of the sky which God had used to symbolize Abraham's innumerable, promised posterity. Immediately above Abraham, Moses holds the two tablets of stone, each tablet being complete in itself, representing the stipulations of God's covenant with the children of Israel through Moses. On the side of this panel beginning at the bottom just above Adam and Eve, a figure of a man's heel is placed on the serpen1's head, expressing the protoevangel ofGenesis 3:15. Above this figure is a smoking furnace, and then still further above is the ark of the covenant with the two cherubim seated on the top on either side of the mercy seat, Just above Noah's ark on the extreme right in this panel, the Red Sea is divided and just above this a quotation from Psalm 2:8 states, Ask of Me, and I shall give thee fthe nations for thine inheritancejf' fthe parity covenant be- tween Father and Son for the redemption of manj. The covenant with David is represented in the third panel showing David in the center with his harp in his hands, surrounded by lambs, one at his feet and one at his knee. Just opposite David, Ezekiel has a vision of the New Jerusalem. At David's back, Isaiah kneels and receives a coal from off the altar Qlsaiah 61. A green band of light proceeding from Isaiah's face and sorrounding the manger scene indicates that Isaiah prophesied concerning the coming of the Messiah. Immediately above David, Jere- miah clad in gray with a green hood, views a hand writing with a quill on a heart a statement concerning the new covenant. Ueremiah 31233: I will write my words upon their hearts. D At this place in the window a transition is made from the covenant theme to major events in the life of Christ by demonstrating that Christ kept all the stipulations of the several covenants. A stipulation of the covenant with Abraham was circumcision. This is represented by showing the traditional seven-prong Candlestick or menorah illuminating a scalpel and just underneath, a green band showing the word Jesus. That Christ kept the ceremonial as well as the moral stipulations of God's covenant with the children of Israel through Moses is indicated by the two scrolls surmounted on the two tablets of stone. Located at the foot of the cross just to the left, are two heads of wheat and two bunches of grapes indicating bread and wine, elements of the new covenant. A chalice and loaf of bread are also shown. The upper panels of the window deal with major events concerning Christ. In the center of the fourth panel Christ is on the cross. He is surrounded by scenes representing important events in His life. On the right He is being baptized by John the Baptist while a dove descends from heaven. On the left with upraised hand in which one can see the scar, Christ teaches green-clad Nicodemus. On the upper right the risen Christ in white displays the scar in His side, the scars in His hands, and a nailprint in His foot. Christ's face is blank, thus discouraging any tenden- cy by the viewer to consider this figure as an image of Christ. tProtestant artists consider it improper to represent details of the face of Christ.J The fifth panel shows Christ standing on the globe of the earth with His right hand upraised in an authority gesture sending out His disciples to all parts of the earth. fThe scar is clearly visible in the hand of Christ, as are the nailprints in His feet.J On the left of the panel a group of people with their backs toward Christ are shown going out to all parts of the world to carry the message of the gospel. A woman dressed in purple has a large black gold-leafed Bible under her arm. On the lower right of this panel Thomas is putting his hand into the side of Jesus, and one can see also the scar in the hand of Christ as well as the nailprint in His foot. Above Christ and Thomas a group of people are gathered together as a mighty dove Qsignifying the Holy Spiritj descends at Pentacost. In the last panel Christ is shown in the center with a broken piece of bread in each hand surrounded by people from all eras of time. They have gathered together for a great consummation celebration predicted by Jesus on the night before His crucifixion QLuke 221165. Immediately above the head of Christ the Greek letters, Alpha and Omega, are intertwined - Alpha in brown and Omega in beige. On either side one can see the river of water of life and the trees of lifeg at the very top above the panel are the rooftops of the Heavenly City. Like the other kids, Lolly and I ran screeching and leaping from my porch where we had been impatient- ly waiting for it to get dark. This Halloween was special - it was the first time we were allowed to go trick or treating alone. In our hands we clutched sweaty, empty pillowcases, filled with the hope of fruit and sweets and nuts. They billowed behind us like chubby goblins as we skipped wildly down the sidewalk. Orange, fragrant pumpkins sat melt- ing on porches as we rushed by, our costumes flapping excitedly. These had been carefully and thoughtfully chosen to suit our desires and per- sonalities. Lolly was an evil black cat with lop- sided cardboard ears, mascara whiskers, and a long yarn tail, al- ready wet from being dragged in the gutter. I was the nastiest witch any of the neighbors had seen. My hat had been impatiently stuffed into my pillow- case, but the paint on my face was still as green as a lizard's belly, and the wart on my nose would have made any toad jealous. Panting, we stood before the first house. Dark thread had been pains- takingly woven into a corner of the porch, and a hairy, pipecleaner spi- der floated menacingly below it. Slowly we inched up the walk. . , 5 D W' f I 'fs' Ir U H sr KX J Hp' - f R Rx Nhrwi J - xmfa-' . fx wgxkglvdw 5 rf X . . K m.., . If ,N xg g .f t -Qi. - I .i if 'r , f I of t fi. To our right, a grin- ning skeleton slumped in a chair, a walky-talky, visibly taped to his ribs. In his lap sat a bowl of bubblegum and jawbreakers. HAVE SOME CANDY, CHILDREN! I gasped. Horrified, we clutched at each other tightly. Lolly gulped. Look at that silly skelton, it isn't even real. She loosened herself from me long enough to give the chair a brave little kick. 'TM GOING TO GET YOU! the skeleton blared statically. Screaming, we fled down the street, both of us tripping on Lolly's tail. HEY MARTHA, I SCARED THEM AWAY!'i came the skelton's worried voice. Gasping for breath, we ducked behind a bush and stared at each other. One of Lolly's ears had fallen down over her eye. Her tail, which had been torn off when I stepped on it, was draped around her neck. Finally I spoke. NB-B-ubble gum isn't g-good for your teeth, that's why I didn't t-take any. Me too. We started down the street, in the opposite direc- tion, toward another house. Amy Perkins, dressed as a pink, sparkling fairy, fluttered by with her mother. We looked after them longingly. She's a baby, she needs to go with her mother? We scornfully walked up to the door of the nearest house. Lolly hesitated, then knocked softly. Slowly the door opened a crack and a hand stuck out. Boldly I took it and shrieked louldy. A slimy glove of water splashed to the porch. Terrified, we flew down the steps, around the block, and into my yard. We stood under a tree, our hearts beating wildly. Uh, I don't think it's fair that our moms can't have the fun of taking us trick or treating. I don't either. I mean, we could go alone, but they do love to come. We didn't see them watching us through the cur- tains, smiles on their faces. A Summer days, long and hot warm breezes blow and sway the grass and wildflowers in the fields. Wild berries, four leaf clover, Queen Anne's lace . A time for sandcastles and moonlight walks along the beach. But then the days get shorter and the sun is not so warm the summer breeze has turned into a crisp autumn wind with a cold nip to it. The sandcastles, that were built on those sun-drenched days have been washed away by chilled waters. A time to walk through the woods on a carpet of soft russet leaves beneath golden trees. A time for closeness and keeping warm Autumn - my time. Then one night winter creeps in along with Jack Frost and before you know it everything is under a blanket of sparkling snow. The wind that blows now is fresh and then, like ice. A time for making Snowmen and angels. Snowball fights, rosy cheeks, and frosted lashes. Clear night skies, and shimmering stars, nature rests beneath the snow. Finally the winter days grow long The rains begin and everything is brought back to life once more. The lost winter's snow has melted and trickled away. Daffodils, Lily of the Valley, fresh green buds, sprouting grasses. A time to walk barefoot through puddles, and let your mind wander free. The days slowly melt into summer and another year has passed. Some have gone, and . . , some more have come Everything has changed . . . we are no longer. Shirley Smies - H V3 ' 'm1 k5',. Q I-.'f ..
