As vvith a symphony, so with a yearbook. Without a score, a director, musicians, and an audience-it could not come to pass. Without a score there vvould be nothing to perform. Without a director, the musicians could not play harmoniously together. Without the musicians the music could not become a reality. And wi'thout an audience all their labors would be in vain. But now with these it is all pos- sible. Our score has taken skill to wri'te. Our editor has put' forth much effort to direct the various tasks. The many writers, photographers, and others have expended much energy to make the ideas a reality. We have accomplished our work, but one thing is lacking. We need an audience to enjoy our labors. So we ask you to listen to this symphony we have composed and receive our offering of praise in words and pictures. As Bach dedicated a piece of music, ln Praise of the Almighty's Will, And for my lVeighbor's Greater Skill. So we wish that this effort might glorify God and please you. DR. BARNES 1 s 1 Q 6 In june of 1978, after thirteen years of service, Marion D. Barnes retired from the presidency of Covenant College. Dr. Barnes, a man of varied gifts and a scien- tist, was concerned during his adminis- tration that Covenant be a place of learning which teaches its students to be analytical. He valued those tools useful in determining what is consistent with Scripture and what is not. Dr. Barnes has worked to develop Covenant's emphasis that each student formulate a Christian world and life view. Retirement does not equal rest for Dr. Barnesp he has agreed to continue his as- sociation with Covenant College as Chancellor. ' Fi . .ul , bi A . avr Q S I' ai.eQ,4s.,.i 4-. J- i 1 x., X2 'i.!i'5 . V' P' Z i 'ii 59 SPIRITU FF IRS The Spiritual Affairs Committee sup- ported the devotional life of the college this year through a Day of Prayer each semester, the Easter sunrise service, sev- eral chapels, movies, and worship ser- vices. The Committee also worked to in- volve students in the activities of the local churches by informing students of the needs of the churches, sending out gospel teams to sing or preach, and an- nouncing events of interest to the spiri- tual life of Covenant. C ffl fy 1 SOCIA CGMMITTEE Preserving student sanity is the goal of the Social Committee. The committee is made up of twelve people who plan, co- ordinate and carry through all of the so- cial affairs on campus. Left to Right-Back row: Nick Lazor, Darlene Kyle, Kathy Young, Eve DeBar- deleben, Nancy Grey, Ruth Hunt, Mar- garet Neuhoff, Front Row: George Aber, leannie Hastings, Charles Snook, and Tom Ricks. CULTUR L FF IRS This year, in attempting to gain wider support and interest in the Covenant Community, the Cultural Affairs Com- mittee has strived to provide enjoyable and stimulating activities which would reach those who had previously been untouched or uninterested in the Com- mittee's program. At Covenant there is a great diversity in the area of cultural in- terests Qart, drama, photography, etc.J, as well as a diversity in cultural views. Much has been done this year to stimu- late fresh thinking in the areas of drama, film and dance-areas which hold a great deal of unexplored potential for Chris- tians. The Committee has revived some old discussions and provoked some new ones in the area of aesthetics. The Cul- tural Affairs Committee wants to prove that art is for everyone, not just the artis- tic elite . Trunks break the air into stripes of darkflight. I step ahead trees to my left and plunge to the bottom of wood-blocked shade. A fearful blankness shutters my mind a split second taste of abandonment to the terror of being in dark. Light bursts free and I surface into a holocaust of dancing flames sun blazing in the spaces between trunks licking blue wood's edge in a preview performance of the day when God will shatter all the strong holds of dark. Light! P. Kiggins I walked down Main Street today. The hollow buildings and vacant lots leered at me with a jagged smile, As I passed black faces With eyes averted From the glare Of my whiteness. -0 R I . ,Qt ,Z ifseff tape? 1 x Q Uh, . Glazed surface and hollow eaves move in misphased orbit around the men who populate these houses, modern men, who isolate form from meaning in thoughts precisely phrased. Now evening turns to night, the contrasts fade. External shapes are lowered swiftly to dark. Window lights rise in an array of patches pressed to brick, exactly laid pattern. This new design has unity, chiaroscuro summary of day. P. Kiggins 118 To David Wilkerson Don't sip tea on my turf. Don't plant flowers in mY garbage can lid. ludy Slenker Crowds Crowds can be such lonely places- Rushing feet drifting faces, Weaving bodies and shifting paces. Amid the swirl of nameless faces, Shoving people scurry to unknown places- Futilely are run the hopeless races. ludy Slenker l. , Thoughts While Walking In Snow Listen to the wind screaming cold threats As we walk this path with careful feet. Bound together by faith we trudge this way Always moving ahead one step at a time On icy insecurity love's strength, The only supporting force. One by one we will fallg One by one we will be lifted up. Till the last step is taken And we lie down exhausted. 120 Ode On A Storm When the storm struck, we were unnerved by its fierceness. Water poured from a sky lashed by jags of lightning and bounced hitting the earth, for the ground was too wet to absorb it. Thunder shook our chairs. Unquiet rubbed our insides, as though we were remembering some other trapped time when a storm struck in fierceness. We, the civilized at weather's mercy, first seize concealment in rationality. The unconquered rain beats down, making rivers and oceans of our roads and gardens, till at last, the bottled fear explodes in the clasp of the storm's supernatural strain and we bow low and worship on primitive knees. In morning, the sky will be edged in purple-red and gold and the night's shame deeply buried with the rain, untold. P. Kiggins Terza Rima lon the death of my grandfatherj In spring when God sang the earth to life, He brought you death, And l fiercely drenched the tear-blended sunset festivity. Thought choked I waited, trembling for your last breath. Not broken, but unable to fight deaths decaying activity Your mind frays slowly in a fog of gray. God's gentling gesture of age in his creativity. Death-cramped you hold on to your last day With timid joy of meeting your long served King. Death hurries on silent feet to light your way. Death sprouted in our lives when God sang spring, And we tenaciously tore at the pain it would bring. But the angels danced a crimsoned celebration Across the sky for the joy of a saints salvation. Brush work blends of the sun-painted banner Gently waking the quiet shadows To dawn's loitering music. Breathless the sunrise sang her music To the rooftops in a whispered Conversation with the shadows, As the morning lighted on her face, Bringing her day's greeting to earth In the jingling dew drop banner. Gliding higher the sun raised her banner ln the daring jazz of midsummer music Pouring her life-giving drinks to earth In a moss murmured, green whispered Molding of the world's flowering face Fragmenting the day-broken shadows. Noon tussled with the sun-flooded shadows, Scorching the hills in her day-drenched banner. Clouds swam above earth's ocean-washed face, Playing interludes in her day-timed music, Harsh, loud and bright, then gently whispered Shadow-dabbed moments of coolness on earth Dwindling the sun melted west on earth, Dropping haggard angular shadows Delicately blurred into greys, whispered Against the rainbow dabbled banner. Silhouetted in the nusic Earth echoed the final farewell to its face. Godspeed wished to its blackened face, Night opened its doors invading earth With whip-or-wills and cricket music. Greying to black on black, the shadows Disappeared into the starry banner Daytime's journey-end quietly whispered. The last kiss goodbye was whispered to night's face When morning's new banner pastel-prismed the earth In the changing shadows of God's daily music. Paula Nuermberger iv' 1- n v .1 . .
