Kicked shins and banged up knees , foggy visibility and a marshy field , long afternoon runs of several miles which bring back thoughts of training campzv 311 are a part of Convenant soccer. Included also must be the continuing desire to play caliber teams and reach big goals in accomplishment. Several nationally ranked teams on the schedule and post season national tournaments are a witness to this fact . Soccer is tough. ra sf 36.1 F ,- x Y ' Q Q 5 . Q I . A new style of play, characterized by finesse and well-placed passes has turned Covenant away from having both a defense and an offense to having eleven players all contributing their skills on their sections of the field. It involves everyday running under pressure trying to gain a few seconds here and there, working on turning your body into a well-oiled machine indifferent to shinsplints and burning sensations of both stomach and mind . Unity describes this year's team which seems to be well-bonded in a concentrated effort of a group of six individuals. The team, led by Coach Will Stern, was dedicated from the start of the season. A spirit of optimism and confidence characterized the team all season long as it was being backed by both good play and a solid team effort. Women's volleyball was an enjoyable event to attend as the ever exuberant crowd kept excitement flowing, giving encouragement to a well-responding team. WQIHQH,S UUH iLl lll 1 Basketball Women's basketball is not new to Covenant this year, but regulation uniforms, tennis shoes, and Coach Will Stern are . Although inexperience plagues the team, energy, spirit, a dedicated desire to improve, and special cottenpick plays make the difference . For a first-year varsity team, they do well, and with added height planned for next year, the team has a very bright future . They were off to a good start by winning the invitational tournament and they looked strong. But the team had its ups and downs which resulted in an even season. The disappointment of the season was the dismal record within the league, yet there were still bright points and exciting ballgames. The purpose of the Board was to free the Senate from the burdens of monitoring student activities on campus. After stumbling through its first year of existence, the Board discovered that, in spite of its organizational lack of confidence , the separation of the Board from the Senate is a good idea that is rich with promise. All it needs is students who are interested in taking the initiative in order to minister to the morale of the students of Covenant College. To the students who we have attempted to serve, good Providence in the following years and take the initiative, knowing that our Lord will honor the godly activity of those who seek to do everything heartily as unto Him. Wayne Partin, President Ken Ingraham , Vice President Mark Mollenkof , Treasurer Fletcher Stubbins, Secretary Ghosties, ghoulies, and goblins were mixed with angels and multi-colored caricaturesg faces once known, now unknown. It was a time when some returned to the memories of their childhood while others remembered the significance behind the day. Involvement by all, in one form or another, characterized the eventful evening. iff? Halloween Party 1 I .f mv' X' ' ' t s- N Social Committee The Social Committee this year attempted to provide an atmosphere in which the lstudents could relax but would at the same time allow the individual to integrate into lthe activity of his choosing. This was our guide in planning the activities and f presented challenges for some to synthesize the two. The activities ranged from parties to roller skating, from movies to special dinners, from concerts to banquets with live entertainment and by live theatre. In it all we were thankful to have had the chance to do it differently, and -hopefully better. Dennis Taylor Donna Malkus Dal Stanton Beth Hamilton David Navis Gary Glasgow John Isaac John Gildernew Casey Reincoster Chris Allen Margaret Neuhoff Cheryl Van Stelle Ruth Stanton Jeannie Hastings Linda Nielson Candy Caines Janice Boughamer Student Senate The efficiency and operation of this year's Student Senate was made easier by a new system of student government that had been drawn up by last year's Student Council. That Council decided to write a new constitution and divided student government into two substructures. The social activities, cultural affairs, and other related responsibilities became the responsibility of the Student Activities Board. The responsibilities of the Student Senate became solely governmental and organizational. It is also political in that it seeks to be a voice of the students by representation on administrative and institutional committees. The power of the Senate lies only in that it is a voice and thus it has been the goal of this year's Senate to be constantly aware of student concerns and to articulate them clearly. The Student Senate does not have any legislative power in the over-all operation of the collegeg its job is to raise questions and represent student opinion. Bill Meffert, Treasurer Duane Cory, Vice President Nancy Todd, Secretary Mike Cromartie, President 3 Bill Kauffman Bruce Hekman Chas Gale Linda Goette Nelson Hard i Film Committee The Film Committee sponsors a short film festival in the fall and selects '7 or 8 full length films to bring at various times throughout the fall and spring semesters. Films are sought which exhibit good film techniques in a variety of themes. Through viewing selected films, participating in post-film discussions, and reading previews and! or reviews about each film in the BAGPIPE, the student body should be helped in their development of a Christian perspective of film, an art not dealt with by the fine arts committee. Cultural Affairs Cultural Affairs activities are coordinated either by the Fine Arts Committee or the Film Committee , both of which are under a chairman who is a member of the Student Activities Board. The Fine Arts Committee seeks to encourage the student body in developing a view of what constitutes fine art in the areas of music, art, photography, poetry, and drama. The committee hopes that the student body will grow in their understanding of how a Christian should appreciate and utilize the fine arts. Under these directives the committee plans a fine arts festival in the fall and a larger one in the spring. At Covenant College it is easy to become isolated from people who need to become reconciled to God . Lack of transportation and money often make it even more difficult to get involved with people outside the Covenant College community. Christian Service Council exists in order to make it possible for students to share their faith in God. What we really are doing is sharing Jesus, the One Who loved us and died for us and Who now is the energizing person within us. The people in the picture are a part of the people who were involved in Christian Service Council sponsored or aided activities this year. All J, 1 Res1dent Assrstants The Resident Assistants are a catalyst or spark in bringing about social interaction and endeavor to nurture fellowship between students that they come in contact with. They try to provide unity for students who see each other every day but don't really know each other. The German Police Dog attitude may seem to be an objective for them , and it may be a valid accusation, but R. A . 's are there for guidance and counseling at a time when one may really need it. On the practical level, R. A. Chapels and hall get-togethers are geared for an interaction that would not normally occur. There are once-a-week and bi-annual orientation meetings when problems concerning the objectives are discussed and the views of the students are voiced to those representing the administration. Chapel speaker on Tuesday, September l6 was Stuart Bris- coe from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Briscoe was a week-long visitor at a local church in the Chatta- nooga area. October 6 will mark the visit of Dr. R. C. Sproul, author and director of the Ligonier Valley Study Center in Stahlstown, Penn. Dr. Sproul is a minister in the Presbyterian Church of America, and is also visiting professor of apologetics at Gor- don Conwell Seminary. He too will be available because he is engaged in a series of meetings at a nearby church. The last speaker will have the longest visit-for three days in November. John Perkins is direc- tor of the Voice of Calvary Church ministries in Mendenhall, Miss. During his stay at Cove- nant on November 5, 6, and 7 he will conduct lobby dis- cussions in addition to speaking in the regular chapel. One of the reasons Mr. Perkins is coming, says Cromartie, is that he can give us practical advice on how to conduct a ministry to the total com- munity. He will encourage us to put flesh on our learning. Perkins has initiated work on a health center tutoring program, recreation and feeding programs. all in addition to his involvement in a local Bible institute. This is accomplished among the rural poor in Missis- sippi. His programs have been featured in Campus Life, De- cision, The Other Side, and the Post-American. Cromartie points out that the expense for bringing such speak- ers is largely reduced because of the proximity of both Sproul and Briscoe at the time of their visits. The senate has aspirations for bringing Senator Mark Hat- field to the mountain during the spring semester. Mr. Parker added that he would eventually like to have the band involved in the college community, sug- gesting that an educational con- cert at area schools would be enjoyable and beneficial to younger students. The band may even perform at the Fall or Spring Festival of Lookout Mountain. The first concert will be performed this Friday night at the College For A Day assem- bly. On Saturday, November l, the Fall Band Concert will be held with Covenants own band performing such greats as Toc- cata for Bands. the movie theme from Brian's Song, and selections from the movie musi- cal, Fiddler on the Roof. Covenant students should be involved in these upcoming concerts. They are sure to be entertaining while at the same time students have opportunity to give the band full support.
