For an event in life is not complete until it can be looked back on. In order for our college experience to be fully grown it must be capable of remembrance from a point of further development in life. 1' 'lf S ffrv-g . ff x ' 'I -.H W' ' .u 1 , A D. fx '. 1'f .M I- '- YHJQUHBA v- ,' --..u 0 4. - , W.--1 5 .- ' --H -, -1 , - . :,-tw? -' ll V X Qui- ' ' ' w ' ' v H 1 'K sfsgm Ley . ff, 'U ,,,,f f wr W 7 1 I 51 But life does not justify itself and the value of an experience is not necessarily inherent in it. What determines the validity of being at Covenant depends on whether or not the experience guides us into a deeper knowledge of, and relationship with, the Lord jesus Christ and to a greater awareness of our responsibilities in Christ's Kingdom. When the time comes then to look back at Covenant days that is what we should see, otherwise the time was not well spent. 5 .9 1 7, ,I 143' .f ul Christ said that we are to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and that anyone who does not take his Cross and follow Him is not worthy of Him. The writer of Hebrews tells us that what cannot be shaken is the Kingdom ot God. Clearly, the only things worth doing and worth striving after are those things done for the kingdom. fa , .,!A , K if m 'T m 4 '5?wfi ' ?l,IAi3'A.: ' ' his '2,4f'ff, i+R'r Y x K w ' Q.. .J1...Wh,..-.1.,,- if FW' 'll l'llW Living a life of true discipleship and service for Christ and His kingdom is a very complex matter. An important part of it is cultivating what Paul calls the mind of Christ. Covenant, being an educational institution primarily in the academic realm, attempts to aid in accomplishing this important aspect of the Christian life. Developing the mind of Christ involves a knowledge of God, man and the world that comes from God through His Word and His creation so that every aspect of reality can be viewed through the proper conceptual framework. But it does not stop there because one cannot have the mind of Christ without living according to it. Concretely, this means if one's experience at Covenant is a development of the mind of Christ it should be impossible to study the arts and sciences without realizing the responsibility to act in these areas in order to further the Kingdom of God. Consider the lilies, how they grow Your heavenly Father takes control. Are you not much more important than they What can your worrying do anyway? Your Father remembers the sparrow that falls The hairs on your head He knows them all. No matter what time or the place I may be Wings of protection are covering me. lO ? 1 'W nuaii My covenant children I will not forsake A better Commandment I will make. Love one another as I have loved you Even a Cup of cold vvater vvill do. Seek first the Kingdom! Keep the righteousness of Cod in vievv. You'd better seek first the Kingdom! He says all of these things will be added to you Copyright 1973 james C. Wardg used by permi Jn I I 7 Qui-n m ' The view of our task to seek the Kingdom of God should be held in a sensitive balance of being in the vvorld, but not of it. Time in the vvorld weighs heavily on our hands. What is accomplished with that time steadies the scale if it carefully builds tovvard the furtherance of the kingdom through the guidance and instruction of the Word. In consideration of a person vvho seems to be working in the world vvith a balance in vievv, vve thought of one vvhose abilities stablize one another. He goes about his work with humility and confidence, is self-conscious yet candid, has strong convictions coupled vvith an open, avvare mind, dissolves his time into his family, his church, his students and his role in the administration. In gratitude, we give respect to Dr. Nicholas P. Barker, and dedicate to him the 1974 Tartan. 13 1, i Faculty and Admimisiraiion o s Q 0130! lb ' Q 11 si A ' W I QUMZEQ' Aan It T Q. 1 ! If 4 The faculty is what a school is all about. What they can give is what the student came to receive. Since at Covenant the faculty is committed to the Lordship of jesus Christ, they attempt to present their particular field of study out of a Biblical perspective. In trying to acquire a broad foundation of ideas and viewpoints in order to integrate and build out of them one's own, based on God's revelation, a student needs teachers to help in understanding what the problems are and to present various viewpoints including their own for the student's consideration. The faculty can enable the student to begin developing a Christian view of reality, giving him a foundation on which to act as a Christian witness in the world. Supporting the educative process in a non-teaching capacity are the men and women who make up the administration. They are one link to the community, the churches and the prospective students. As it stands, they necessarily function to make the college financially stable in a very unstable society which caters to secular universities and colleges. ln their hands rests the difficult task of setting the school apart from society's norm and making it Christianly unique in the areas of business and recruitment. . Although these stones weren't com- pletely removed, they were at least partially dislodged to facilitate easier planting. The planting of this year's Student Council was accomplished as the members organized themselves into several committees to deal more effectively with the various problems and issues. This work sometimes led to frustration, but more of- ten resulted in fruitful projects and worthwhile efforts at improving communication among the different sec- tors of Covenant life. -14 Student Council ,I Ii sv .iigy 4 ,,v K .ya 'Li I1- Y LLL! ,M.-39' dxf' x rf- -'fax' --.... ,4- , -A 4 - 42 fi 25. .n -i -Qi, 4-, -2 : 5 . Still Alarm , Sham , Going Up Covenant College is still in its infancy as far as drama is concerned. Each year the active partici- pants in drama fight and conquer the whole ga- mut of obstacles-improper lighting, no stage, hand-made costumes, and time. If the produc- tion is done well, the result is roses. Drama, be- cause of the work of Christ for us, allows us to see ourselves and others better than ever before. Randy Carroll allowed us to laugh at our gul- libility, our inability to face reality, and just the plain amount of humor in our lives. We laughed because the characters were funny, and not be- cause all of life is a comedy. Perhaps it is humor that helps-us to see our problems better. 045' 52 Fall Banquet Again came the glittering time of year when couples filled the lobby with corsages and whispers and compliments. The throng was directed towards a high white building downtown and an awaiting feast. But it was far from food that made the atmosphere of the evening a memorable one. Laughter of friends, candlelight, and the Spirit-fresh songs of Honeytree created not just another glittering time but a rich experience itself. 34 Preservation Hall jazz Band a New Orleans jazz does not submit to the con- fines of words very well. lt is seven men who are playing a tradition, and are still reaching into a spring of creative genius to improvise. They were there when jazz began and their techniques and their souls have never forgotten how to make it happen again and again. It was a casual concert. From where we sat we could see the vibrant, joyous, excited black faces of the musicians. We could not keep still. The music lifted us out of our seats, made us clap our hands and tap our feet. It was real and unforgettable. Preservation Hall jazz Band 55 f ll' szl. . n Freshmen 5 a 1 Q -0,4 -fr KT' A . .'V1 14', ,.: 'V at .JH1 f?7' A ffl en. Many could not understand why he was here, nor why he placed the signifi- cance he did on a Christian's involvement in the arts. Per- haps he told us why when he said that we look at a painting by Rembrandt the same way we look at a flowered tablecloth. In a manner that was personally informal and surprisingly honest and frank, Dr. Seerveld presented three lectures dealing with a view of our nakedness, the Christian's visual response either in praise of his Creator or sorrow in repen- tance, and a Reformational Christian Reading of Eccle- siastes-his own interpretation of that book. Each evening, he sat encircled by interested listeners as he dialogued on everything from a philosophy of aesthetics to sex education. In all, Calvin Seerveld accomplished his mission to Cov- enant College by invoking us to think much more seriously than before that art is just as much a part of our lives as science and mathematics. For everyone, his short stay proved to be an unforgettable way of learning, and some- thing we could apply to our lives. Christian Thought Conference 85 lames Ward is a soulful song painter. Would it be chopping out just to label him and let it go at that? Somewhat like a canvas artist, he brushes language in all the color, form, and symmetry of musical notes. And the language he speaks sings to the heart, as well as the ear. And if we can de- scribe soulful as filled with life then james Ward is soulful, for he offers to the Lord who died for him praise and love. james Ward is in- deed a soulful song painter. 86 james Ward Concert '11, f im ,..11' , X., , ,, , - ,, .-4' 1 ,. e ' 4 A -091 xg al. For the tirst time in a big production there were more people trx ing out than there were roles available. Finally the cast of thirtx-seven was chosen-a remarltablv able group of people readx for an eventual forty-five rehearsals. Exerv person was valuable and important in the total enterprise-from the walk-on's to the lead characters. tilumsiness had to be rubbed out and elegance and poise lett in its place, voices and characterizations had to be interpreted and sculptured into totally new, yet hu- man people. Costumes had to be sewn together, then al- tered, a stage, a high-level platform and a tower with a secret elevator had to be designed and constructed dur- ing spring brealt. Furniture was found, music arranged, lights wired, props put together, make-up coordinated, swords bought. Then the biology lab was pilfered for some ex e of newt and blind worms sting . l IU Macbeth W If 5 .au ww D ,Ss . , 1.1-:Sf--zu -: Mimi ' gi- JF A X39 Q, ,,, yew, Q w , Q . . any ' ' if, 1. - Y fs V: - 5 ' - -5 ' ?'- 4- X' f, aff- .24 v 24 A f-I ff fi-5 i: ?2 ' 1 '. -s-1: w.:w':m,: . ,,..f...hf V, . , , --13 rr . .fw- Q'-3 5 ,f1,:.::,5 - 1 -. wi :g,,?-raegx ' YQ Zf,igg5i?,?i'f'25g2f ' 'S 'S ff . You first of all had to learn to accept your stifled ability to communi- cate totally with your voice, your body, your face. Then came hours of experimenting and failure and probings and more failure, then a very special moment when you were given a new, fresh insight. Then you became the noble Banquo, the loyal Ross, the prophetess witch, the graceful courtier, the guilty Macbeth. For two and one- half months you studied, ate, and even slept Macbeth. You listened to your director and to each other and usu- ally only responded when you thought something was going wrong. You prayed for insight and strength, to stay with it one more night. Macbeth came alive and was real. Each character was a living, breathing human being, free to make a choice between good and evil. The audience was given a special window to witness the end of nobility, the end of friend- ships, the end of a great love, the end of sanity and life itself. The last production was the last of nightly ten o'clock appointments in the Great Hall camp ground. All in all, it seemed a bit of a letclown. Yet the lessons learned can never be taken away from you. God helped you to work and stay together-physically and mentally. You've only begun to learn to live more for Him.
