Dawn and The sTarT oT anoTher day repre- senTs one oT several possibiliTies Tor The Cov- enanT sTudenT. For an unTorTunaTe Tew, iT means a raTher rude awakening in order To TulTill early morning pracTical work or lciTchen assignmenTs. For many, engaged in The sweeT bliss oT sleep, dawn comes and goes-rising musT waiT unTil The compulsion of The TirsT class lor The sec- ondl. To mosT, however, dawn represenTs only The agony oT crawling ouT oT bed. Unwashed and bleary-eyed, some oT These sTudenTs sTumble upon The brealcTasT scene, alThough mosT have rinsed away all Traces oT sleep and are sup- posedly ready To Tace The challenge oT anoTher day. BrealcTasT is noT The siTe oT sTrenuous social inTercourseg communicaTion is insTead by os- rnosis. ATTer brealcTasT, The compulsion oT a class' schedule, a worlc schedule, or a renewed bed schedule draw sTudenTs To Their respecTive desTinaTions. Though iT oTTen Tales parT OT a class period To reTurn To The daily academic whirl, morning classes are usually lively, if indeed CovenanT sTudenTs are ever inTellecTual- ly alive.

This aTTenTiveness pervades The enTire morning scene, or aT leas+ unTil The halT hour seT aside Tor chapel. There is, aT Times, a cerTain warmTh in gaThering Tor worship as a sTudenT body, buT worship is rarely considered as every- one anTicipaTes The nexT class or The conTenTs oT The down- sTairs mailbox. This mood oTTen prevails Tor The individual as he hears, buT does noT lisTen To, speakers who are noT simply Talking buT TreguenTly speaking. WiTh The exodus Trorn chapel, The lunch line Torms mark- ing The peak oT The day, Tor aTTer lunch The pace begins To wane. ATTernoon college liTe is aT This poinT, excepT Tor The sTudenT who wishes To pursue Tomorrow's assignmenTs, lisTless and drugged. A deTiniTe progression, ThaT oT The CovenanT machine coming To a virTual sTandsTill, is evidenT, and Then iT comes To a grinding halT righT beTore1dinner. AT dinner, when The men grudgingly don Their coaTs and The women Their evening shoes, The sTudenT body begins To caTch iTs corporaTe second wind. Some regain This sooner Than oThersg some never do. For Those who have come To liTe during dinner, inTerchange conTinues around The Table, and Then moves ouT inTo The lobby. The lobby is in a very real sense The sTudenT union, The place To go when There is noThing To do or when iT is desirable To TorgeT ThaT There is someThing To clo.
