Ecclesiastes 3:1 X 'X ' XI ' A 'rg W1 9 ' r a N xw7,i ,. Af X. 1' is X, gigs' 1 fr Q 4' 'i 'hai W. . . . A season for learning. What is anticipated?- a paradox?! A continuous well-ordered body called knowledge, coupled with an individual's tree- dom that is yet untempered by the responsibility of learning? As the season lengthens, the inner search for reality germinates into an awareness of individual potential. This seed of wisdom bears fruit in the interaction the person experiences with others . . . in his attempts to relate in a meaningful way to those around him. His still uncoordinated ideas and observations grow with him towards a point-maturity: seeing and accepting the chal- lenge ot orienting Iite's varied aspects to one purpose. He is grounded in the certainty of primary purpose that in all things He might have the preeminence. His acceptance of the purpose at Covenant-to grasp the understanding of knowl- edge that stems only from faith in the Lord God -enables him to branch out ignoring fallow purpose, to utilize instead his now-tertile thoughts to establish his own goals. t l I . li l l-8' fr i I ,ij it . 1 Q I , J ar- + ,' W.+.,. fr r A 4 v Q91 W i it, A Li Ba . Because certain individuals have a desire to see the institution carry out its philosophy of Christian education and make progress, because they have a knack for evidencing an intense concern for students, Cdespite the sacrifice of personal time and interestsj, and feel a spirit of comradeship in student high points and low, and because they exemplify a zest for life Kvitalityb in Christ-for these reasons we have chosen to dedicate the T968 TARTAN to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Anderson Major changes appeared in the men and women's physical education departments as well as in the sports' department in T964 when Flo and Chuck Anderson arrived on the scene. Many of our now-established extras such as Water Safety, First Aid, Horseback Riding, Judo, and Bowling can be traced to this couple and their concern to see Covenant advance and provide more varied outlets for students. The Andersons not only offered something new but participated in these activities with students. Whether being rescued in water safety or trying to hold the old knee together on the basketball court, they were there! And who could forget the antics or clever faux pas that Mr. Anderson, in the role of professor, interiected in lectures'?iAs a class sponsor, professor, or friend the Andersons have endeared themselves to all and embody in their lives, energetic and vibrant as they are, the principle that in all things He might have the preeminence . For this example we dedicate this book to them. A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that whiclt is planted 5 Q' 4 . Student government-its effectiveness, its contribu- tions, indeed its very existence-was seen from a new perspective and with new serious- ness. The sizeable increase in school enrollment and the addition of new faculty members brought marked improvements and a disap- pearance of many old problems as well as unexpected headaches for the Council. Truly it must be said that this year was one of change, rapid change. To meet this change, the Council attempted to correct existing dif- ficulties in the area of student-administration communications. Also, guidelines were drawn up which at- tempted to put student government and stu- dent self-discipline on higher levels than in previous years. The overall aim was to give the Student Association a greater voice in the affairs of its school forthe future. 29 lsu'lL I BELOW: K Chairman X If rg Y Y -v , , -WM . As our lives seem to revolve around and integrate three primary areas of endeavor-social, intellec- tual and spiritual-that committee relegated the task of planning Covenant's special social activities is not only privileged to fulfill a Christian endeavor, but responsible to inte- grate all three areas of interest in this en- deavor. Covenant's i967-68 Social Commit- tee succeeded in achieving iust such a result. The Committee was headed by chairman Karen Pierce and included members Sandra Campbell, Linda Laverell, Patty English, Ken Fowler, and Dave Hammond who together wove imaginative planning, humorous diver- sion, and serious emphasis into the fabric of the major social events, the autumn hayride, Christmas and Spring Banquets, and climaxed the year's activities with the Garden Party. Visitors to the campus have commented on the unique dormitory situation at Covenant, where all students are allowed and trusted to live in the same building. The quality ot Covenant students, however, does not rule out the need tor a hard working Dormitory Council. The closeness ot this same unique situation manifests needs and tensions which are the task ot the Council to dispel! The Resident Assistants in both the men and women's dormitories are responsible tor being sensitive to and handling such problems that inevitably arise when three hurdred peo- ple live together in one building tor eight months ot the year. The Resident Course!- lors, who are above them in rank and respon- sibility, have regular weekend and evening duties in their respective dormitories. The womens Dormitory Council is super- vised by Mrs. Collyn Schmidt, Dean of Wo- men, and the n1en's Dormitory Council is supervised by Mr. James Conrad, Dean ot Men, both ot whom are supervised by Dr. Paul Gilchrist, Dean ot Students. A Time For Correction in For handling discipline problems, Covenant has a student-appointed, faculty-approved Discipline Committee. This active standing committee of the Student Council reviews cases of student' discipline referred to it by either the Deans or by other students. Solu- tions to problems are carefully sought before punishment is meted out on the offender. The Committee also acts as a voice of the students in the administration's decisions in niatters of policies which mold student affairs. 41' ii -5 If 1 ,- i pl 5: S LEFT: Dave Lawton, Rob Bal lagh, Jayme Sickert, Edie Cos tello, Roy Fagan Creciting Opportunities For Service ABOVE: Tim Stigers, Bill Mahlow, Jim Peale, Linda Titmus, Bob Houpt, David Barnes Cchairrnanj, Debbie Kemeny, Carl Haas. Food was still being prepared in the adobe structure, but missionaries were concerned that the kitchen would collapse and the Seminary would have to be closed. This need was conveyed to the students of Covenant, and hence the raising ot ii:-SOO to build a new kitchen became the 1968 project of the Student Missions Fellowship. A Faculty pie-throwing contest, bake sales, hootenannies, and a faculty-student basket- ball game were fund-raising gimmicks util- ized by the Missions Fellowship to part the students from their money painlessly and en- ioyably. These factors, coupled together with the fighting desire of each player, add- ed up to the winningest season yet. English- man John Guest came to take charge for one season, and in iust two-and-a-half months gave the Scots the polish which had been missing in past years. Goals and victories were scarce at the start. Then, the Blue-and- White offense began to kick the ball into the nets. Sophomore Gil Kinch set a school scor- ing mark of T2 goals in spite of an iniury. He was backed ably by senior John Ledden's 7 markers. Not to be discounted, however, was the impregnable defense ledtby iunior Mack Gray and senior Ed Dengler. An improvement of the year's 5-5-3 record should be seen next year. The Scots will be in the soccer spotlight of the Southeast. T Scots Break Even K N 6 Y U 4 'Ei 3 M. 'x D . S . s ul! . , r ., Ii v. . ,,., E ', 1 3,5 ., 'v . , , T, l VA 'ixfaj 5 f. K. Freshman Rick Tyson and senior John Ledden struck early, and the rest was left to the resistant defense. The U.C. Mocs were set back in a hard fought double overtime game, 4-3. Under the aggressive direction of Bill Spern, Campus Day was a real thorough back-break- ing success. The student body and faculty, administration and staff turned out in full force to eradicate the six months' accumula- tion of dirt, grime, and grease. Campus Day, held twice a year, gives opportunity for a concentrated effort to thoroughly clean the entire campus: clearing brush, scrubbing stairs and windows, sloshing cleaning fluid and win- dow spray over classrooms, lobby, and halls. The results were aching muscles, broken fin- gernails, old clothes that had gotten even dirtier, and a clean campus of which all were proud. A Pause Beoutify Frosh Adopt The proud are compelled to drop their feel- ing of superiority and to acquire a little humility when they are forced to conform to wearing beanies and to other humbling activities. The seniors of 1968 spent their autumn sneak on a svvampy inlet of the Chattahoochee river at a combination day-school-summer camp, which on that weekend was renamed Celia-Cribs rest home for greater security purposes. Horseback riding at 7:00 a.m., bas- ketball and trampolining at 12:00 p.m., break- fast cooked outside, steaks so big they wouldn't fit on your plate, canoeing, swim- ming, unexpected dunks and some bone- chilling nights in open-air cabins all com- bined for a very happy climax to four of the best years of our lives .
