ROAD TO THE TOP After facing many tough teams, the Leop- ards were to face a team that the coaches had been talking about all season long- the Condon Blue Devils in the semi-finals. Condon had over-powered their oppo- nents with lopsided scores. But they made two basic errors. They didn't give their starters enough 4 quarters with a tough team, and they under estimated Cove. They came out over confident. They came, remembering their lopsided scores against Echo and Prairie City-two teams Cove beat by a small margin. They forgot that Cove, a team with no outstanding talents, had been winning with heart and hard work. They forgot the Leopard's tra- dition of sticking together when the going gets tough. Finally, they forgot the strength of the Leopard bench and the coaching staff. After a hard battle. Cove came out victorious 20-14. No one thought that Cove would do very well this season. Our line and backfield were light, for the size of team that Cove has, but large in heart. And that was all they needed. They had a young starting team, mainly Juniors on the line and in the back field. That never slowed them down at all, con- trary to some people's thoughts. Cove SCOREBOARD VS. C.P. National STATE GAME On the morning of November 19th the Cove Leopards stepped onto the practice field for the last time this season. It was the last practice before traveling almost 600 miles to plav Butte Falls for the 8-B Championship. That ni ht they rolled into Bend where they spent the night. They had a team meeting in the coaches’ room before they went to bed. Wake up at 8:30. then to Eagle Point High School for practice. In Medford they had more meetings jnd then to bed. In the morning butterflies were seen on everyone s face as they ate a tjuiet breakfast. Then onto Butte Falls. On the field, the Leopards were louder and more intense than ever. Cove kicked off to the Loggers and they didn't wait long to get going. On the second play. Fred Frison ran 31 ards for a touchdown • 8 0. Cove got the ball and went to within scoring ange. but came to an abrupt halt as a penalty flag was thrown. This pattern eemed to haunt the Leopards the whole game. At the half, it was 14 0. l oggers. Lady Luck was not on the Leopards side that day and they lost. The Mud Leopards attack on the Loggers. After the loss, the emotion flowed in the tears.
