COVE HIGH SCHOOL COVE, OREGON CLASS If I were to ask an average student from a surrounding high school, What first few things come to your mind when I say Cove he would probably say, cherry trees, swimming pool, and football teams. People outside our town and school rarely understand the closeness that we students share, and the pride that we have for our school. They may think of us as odd or different, out of place, or just plain strange. But that is fine with us because we all know that we are the classiest act around. Whether it's cheering in the stands, studying for a test, sinking the ball, or just excelling to be the best, we ll give it our all. but if we don't win, we hold our heads high and are ready to try it again. We are proud of our school, a pride that is unmatched. That’s right, we are, a very class act! 2 ALBERTSONS ACT BRONSONS LUMBER 3 IS THIS A CLASS ACT? Condon had over-powered their oppo- nents with lopsided scores. But they made two basic errors. They didn't give their starters enough 4 quarters with a tough team, and they under estimated Cove. They came out over confident. They came, remembering their lopsided scores against Echo and Prairie City-two teams Cove beat by a small margin. They forgot that Cove, a team with no outstanding talents, had been winning with heart and hard work. They forgot the Leopard's tra- dition of sticking together when the going gets tough. Finally, they forgot the strength of the Leopard bench and the coaching staff. After a hard battle. Cove came out victorious 20-14. No one thought that Cove would do very well this season. Our line and backfield were light, for the size of team that Cove has, but large in heart. And that was all they needed. They had a young starting team, mainly Juniors on the line and in the back field. That never slowed them down at all, con- trary to some people's thoughts. Cove SCOREBOARD VS. National STATE GAME On the morning of November 19th the Cove Leopards stepped onto the practice field for the last time this season. It was the last practice before traveling almost 600 miles to plav Butte Falls for the 8-B Championship. That ni ht they rolled into Bend where they spent the night. They had a team meeting in the coaches’ room before they went to bed. Wake up at 8:30. then to Eagle Point High School for practice. In Medford they had more meetings jnd then to bed. In the morning butterflies were seen on everyone s face as they ate a tjuiet breakfast. Then onto Butte Falls. On the field, the Leopards were louder and more intense than ever. Cove kicked off to the Loggers and they didn't wait long to get going. On the second play. Fred Frison ran 31 ards for a touchdown • 8 0. Cove got the ball and went to within scoring ange. but came to an abrupt halt as a penalty flag was thrown. This pattern eemed to haunt the Leopards the whole game. At the half, it was 14 0. l oggers. Lady Luck was not on the Leopards side that day and they lost. The Mud Leopards attack on the Loggers. After the loss, the emotion flowed in the tears. The Junior Class of 1988 has a wide variety of personalities. They range from nice and understanding to rude and crude. Some of the Juniors don't necessarily care about what is happening around them, while the others have to constantly be involved in something. Of course they have the scholars and the jokers (mostly the jokers). Don't get the Juniors wrong, they are not just a bunch of rowdy, no good teenagers, they are the future. When winter hits Cove High, it provides new opportunities for some people, such as skiing or just playing around in the white powdery sub- stance. For the athletes it brings on many hours on the bus traveling to lands far, far away to compete in Basketball. It also provides time for the bookworms to bury their noses deeper into their studies to make their usual high grades. But all in all, winter is a time to enjoy at Cove High. However, the Leopards didn't have an easy time of it. in fact they started the season 0 4. Things did change, the Leopards took a new direction by beating Powder Valley and Joseph to win the Cove Christmas Tournament. When it came time for the district playoffs the Leopards had only lost twice since the Christmas Tournament. The first opponent of the Leopards in the playoffs were the Monu- ment Savages, who eventually fell to the Leopards. Next to fall to the Leopards onslaught were the Spray Eagles. Unfortunately the Leopards were defeated in the district championship by the Dayville Devils. Yet the Leopards had accomplished their goal of a chance in the State Tournament, where, they managed to advance to the consolation game before losing to St. Paul. All things aside, the Lady Leopards had a fine year, fighting to give their coach the best season they could, in this his final season. WOODVILLA R.V.
