FACES The bringing back of the state football title, a new face on the volleyball court, injuries were popular among all sports partici- pants, the second year for the 4-day school week, budget prob- lems, and many new fashion changes. These were a few of the highlights that made FACES IN ’85 '86 at Cove High. The Yearbook and Journalism staffs would like to introduce the Cove High School, FACES IN '85 '86 yearbook. Reaching the District Tournament their goal was to make it to the finals to play Prairie again. They beat North Powder moving on to meet Dayville, but lost after giving them a run for their money. Cove won their next game against Monument to take third place in the tourney. Prairie City beat Daville for first place and went on to win the State Tournament. 5 J.V. Larry James wide open Jo Thompson eludes a Honker It was a year for rebuilding, and a year for meshing together as a team, and especially a year for revenge! The Leopards started this year on a high point, beating the Honkers very handily. They remained un- beaten for two more weeks. Then a relaxed and over confident Cove team showed up to face North Powder. The overconfidence proved to be disas- trous as a fired up Badger team upset the favored Leopards. After this loss, the Leopards vowed not to lose another game so they could get revenge on the Badgers. This held true as the Leopards crushed opponents throughout the rest of the reg- ular season. The Leopards beat Long Creek easily. Then they traveled to Con- don and defeated a tough Blue Devil team. Then came Badger time as the over powering Leopards beat the Badgers 34-0 in a Mud Bowl. But now it was time to face the Peter Popoff squad from St. Paul. It was an amusing game, as the Leopards once again brought back the Blue! It was the 2nd consecutive time these two teams had faced each other for the state crown. The 1984 game had been a disapointment for the Leopards when they lost 28-50 to the bucks, but this year they were determined to bring back the blue. As it turned out, the Leopards totally annihilated the defending champions 74-8 in a game they will never forget. Everyone of the Leopards had a great game, but above all, was Jo Thompson with 357 yards for 7 touchdowns; also in the spot- light was Jon Calhoun with a touchdown run and a touchdown pass to Larry James. Taz Roberts also ran for a touchdown. The line did a tremendous job led by Jeff VanSickel, Brian Driggers, Shawn Parker, Darren Mur- chison, and Larry James. The defence was overwhelming as they held the undefeated Buckaroos to one touchdown. 16 FALL SPORTS BANQUET Mrs. Campbell presents the Varsity players with awards The Fall Sports Banquet was held in honor of all the athletes who participated in fall sports. Mr. Pereira gave the most inspirational award to Scott Loree; the most improved player was Larry James; the most outstanding lineman was Jeff VanSickel. The heart and soul award went to Darren Murchison, and the most valuable players were Jo Thompson and Bri- an Driggers. Mrs. Campbell gave Tonya Howland the most improved player award; Pam Endicott received the most inspirational award. Kris Hohstadt received the heart and soul award and the most valuable player was Sher- ry Ott. 17 Jon Calhoun Receives an award from Mr. Pereira GIRLS BAKETBALL Our Lady Leopards had a great year, ending their season by placing third at the District tournament. By earning third they defeated Prairie City, a team the girls hadn't beat all season. This made for an even sweeter victory. The girls posted an 11-9 overall record and a 7-4 league record. A very fine season when you consider that the team only had one senior and two juniors. A tough season without that much experience. Through the season, the girls improved themselves and their record. The team and their coach achieved this by hard work and determination. All 1 can say is you did a great job and we. the students of CHS, are very proud of you. D. Miller-Manager, D. Folsom, S. Ott, P. Endicott, K. Hohstadt, T. Bieker, J. Ott-Coach,J. Thew, K. Loree, S. This year the Cove boys experienced something a Leopard team hasn't in a very long time, a non-winning season. If you think it sounds bad. how do you think the guys felt? At the first of the season, everybody had high hopes for the team. As the sea- son progressed, those hopes disappeared. Finally, when the season was nearing its end. the guys decided to have fun. It was in these games that the Leopards played their best ball of the season. 22 WILLIAMSON INSURANCE Coach Mills sets the play Driving Driggers Up, up, and away Air Jon Larrius Erving BAUM INSURANCE 23 BOYS JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL R. The Junior Varsity team of 1985-86 continued in the ways of Cove's past JV teams. They continued to destroy opponents left and right. The team only lost one game the entire sea- son; that loss came at the hands of the Union Bobcats. All in all, a very spectacular season, giving the varsity team a very ripe crop of talent to choose from next year. 24 P. AND M INVESTMENTS ALAM ELECTRIC SPORTS SNAPS I shot that!
