L DEDICATION From the beginning of time man has tried to better himself. Many acts have gone into this betterment process. However, one of the most significant of all records of history is the record of great battles, great military leaders, and great wars. Many of the greatest contributions to human happiness have gone almost entirely unnoticed by historians. But, to the men and women who have sacrificed their lives-we are eternally grateful. This 1964 COURTNIAN is dedicated to WORLD PEACE. Because only with World Pe ace can the men and women of this century make their greatest contributions to mankind. 9 infer' .af -v9F ' iw 4299 FRIENDLIEST 7 1 Sr' BEST PERSONALITY Jimmy Craver and Laura Renegar Catherine Holden and Charles I-Iolden CUTEST Gale Bowman and Ronnie Wiles WITTIEST Shelby Spillman and Andy West , s I n 5 I i r I 1 w 1 P n Z ,- 4 1W5!Y7g-. CLASS HISTORY After completing elementary grades, feeling very proud of ourselves to challenge the work, fun, and privileges that high school offered, we were ready to prepare ourselves for the future. Mr. Grover Brown was our homeroom teacher. We had an enrollment of twenty-eight pupils and were very glad to welcome Iodell Shore as a member of our class. Our class officers were Ted Simmons, President, Lela Dobbins, Vice-President, Carolyn Reavis, Treasurer, Catherine Holden, Secretary, and Sandra Dinkins, Reporter. We were proud to have Lillie Mae Sneed as Miss Courtney High for this year. A little wiser, and still willing to learn, we began our sophomore year. Mr. Thomas Hanes was our homeroom teacher. Our class enrollment was twenty-seven. We were glad to welcome Geraline Pettit and Monroe York into our midst. Our class officers were: Woodie Gough, President, Lela Dobbins, Vice-President, Tommy Dixon, Treasurer, Kay Fulk, Reporter, and Bonnie Wiles, Secretary. Mr. Hanes took us on our class trip to Winston-Salem. We toured Whitaker Park and enjoyed ourselves at Tanglewood and Reynolds Park. After we visited the parks we had a good time bowling. Mrs. Sue Miller took us to Bowman Gray School of Medicine on a biology field trip. We saw many interesting animals and we found the trip to be very educational. George Reavis was chosen as Mr. Courtney High. Bonnie Wiles was winner of the World Peace Speaking Contest and won a trip to New York and the United Nations. Our junior year was a year for more work, fun, and planning for the various activities, but with eager hearts to reach our goal as Seniors we began our work vigorously. Our homeroom teacher was Mrs. Sue Miller, and our class enrollment was tvventy-six. We were glad to welcome Kay Pendry and Linda Blankenship as new class members. Our class officers were: Susan Foster, President, Lela Dobbins, Vice-President, Bonnie Wiles, Secretary, Gale Bowman, Treasurer, and jimmy Craver, Reporter. After much hard work, planning, and co-operation, we gave the Seniors a wonderful banquet at Vance Motor Lodge in Statesville. IUNIOR MARSHALS were: Lela Dobbins, Chief, Susan Foster, Catherine Holden, Bonnie Wiles, and Ted Simmons. BETA CLUB members were: Lela Dobbins, Susan Foster, Ted Simmons, Catherine Holden, and Bonnie Wiles. Bonnie Wiles was chosen assistant editor for the yearbook, and we were proud of Carol Ann Martin as the winner of the World Peace Speaking Contest. She too went on a trip to New York and the United Nations. As Seniors we feel brokenhearted because we know it will be our last year at Dear Old C.H. S. , but we know we have to face the future on our own and learn to live in a world of problems and strife. Our homeroom teacher is Miss Catherine Anthony. We welcomed Doug Renegar in our senior class this year. The opening business of the year was the election of our class officers. They were: Lela Dobbins Parker, President, Andy West, Vice-President, Catherine Holden, Secretary, Ted Simmons, Treasurer, and Carol Hayes, Reporter. Carol Ann Martin is Miss Courtney High of 1963-1964. The first big thrill of the senior year was our class rings, but one of the most enjoyable and remembered events was our trip to Washington, D. C. and to New York. That was one week that no one will ever forget. The juniors gave us a lovely banquet. Thanks Juniors! Those who have participated in sports are as follows: FOOTBALL: Woodie Gough, jimmy Craver, Andy West, Ted Simmons, Tommy Dixon, Ronny Wiles, Doug Renegar, and Gary Shore. BASKETBALL: Carol Ann Martin, Lela Dobbins Parker, Ted Simmons, Tommy Dixon, Polly Hoots, Woodie Gough, Gary Shore, Doug Renegar, Carolyn Reavis, Gale Bowman, and Paul Steelman. BASEBALL: Woodie Gough, Ted Simmons, Doug Renegar, Paul Steelman, Ronny Wiles, and Andy West. CHEERLEADERS: Gale Bowman, Geraline Pettit, Kay Fulk, Shelby Spillman, Sandra Dinkins, and Carolyn Reavis. The one big event that we have worked for during the past twelve years is about to be a reality-not a dream any longer-GRADUATION TIME is here! ! ! ! GALE BOWMAN Class Historian 45 Q 1 Oi X Ek 5 .
