Not through words, but by our actions can we express The Thanks we owe These men. MRS. KATHRYN BENGE Secretary She is never too busy to help each of us. The River, moving in graceful curves on its way to the ocean, at times calm and peaceful and at oth- ers a raging torrent, influences all of our lives. As long as it is guided and kept within its banks, the River is a gracious provider, making pos- sible the varied and abundant har- vests for which the area is so fam- OUS. ln like manner education flows through our lives, at times plunging and racing by us madly. No matter what way it may come, we must be able to control education, and bend it to our will as we have so ably done with the River. For, as in River flood time, only chaos can remain from an uncontrolled flood of edu- cation. From the control and guid- ance of the educational stream - which each individual must provide A will come far richer and more varied harvests than were ever reaped from the goodness of the River. 7wfK,Z-faggc afrde r..., 'r f l l Top to bottom: Mr. Stanley McVicker, Dean of Boys, Senior Problems, Algebra I, Crafts, Physical Education. Starting off the year with a very low treasury, we took over the operation of the popcorn machine and held an excellent cake sale which built up our resources. The theme of the annual Junior Prom was Midnight in Manhattan, with the music furnished by Bill Gallegos. Although the dance had a slow and confusing start, its final outcome was one of outstanding success. Our class presented the Junior Assembly which showed the Student Body the talents of some Junior members. The last main event of the year, the Junior-Senior Banquet, was enioyed by all who attended. During the past year, our class has been well represented in all activities, scholastically as well as athletically. PW First row, left to right: F. Lujan, M. Gwerder, P. Meyer, E. Carmany. BEELER Our Sophomore year was our best yet! So we Sophomores all agreed as we worked to carry on the traditions of life at Courtland High. We started off the year by hosting a successful reception welcoming the in- coming Freshman Class. Hours of planning and rehearsing soon followed for our Sophomore Assembly, entitled Vaudeville Days, was presented to the Student Body in the latter part of October. The selection of our class rings came next, and in a surprisingly short time and with little debate the rings were chosen to the satisfaction of all. Members of our Sophomore Class participated in all phases of school life. On the honor roll, in sports, and in extracurricular activities, the Sophomores showed flair and talent. Apple Blossom Time, our Sophomore Dance held in March, highlighted our year and proved that regardless of all the work, dances are oh so much fun! First row, left to right: E. Brandon, A. Weeks, D. Courtland High's largest class . . . started their high school years with a very nice reception given by the Sophomore Class. Entertainment, refreshments, and dancing all added up to a lot of fun. Next came our Freshman Hop which was very successful and enjoyed by all who attended. Many of our Freshman boys participated in sports events, playing equally good seasons in football, basketball, baseball, and track. The whole school enjoyed our fine assembly. Everyone agreed that some of the Freshmen were quite talented. Scholastically, we were well represented on the Honor Roll, and during the second semester, some of us became members of CSF. In more ways than one we think the Freshman Class has added to the very fine school Spirit which has characterized CHS throughout the past year. nag? f- '- .,,x S 'NW' .ai 17 s. 5 Q 5- 'V , 7 L 1 avg' . ing K!-L Q Hs f . : ' E, A 9 mi is ' Sl' A , f ' it in I L W' U 2 2 f W ,' f5P ' f ,yieif k 1 S ,- L Mi L L, . The FFA is an intracurricular activity having its origin and root in a definite part of the school curriculum-vocational agriculture. The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is the development of agricultural leadership, cooper- ation, and citizenship. Programs of work, built on the needs of the individual and the community, are set up annually by every chapter. The results attained, therefore, are due to the farmer-training objectives set up and carried out by the boys themselves. Displaying fine team spirit and outstand- ing ability, the team had an unmatched record of six exciting victories. A hard-fought victory over the Dixon Rams, toughest competitors of the Yolo Coun- ty Athletic League, thrilling victory over Davis in the last three minutes of play, and the climaxing victory over our rival Clarksburg's strong Junior Varsity helped to make l955 a perfect season. Hail the mighty B Chargers! a fast-playing, high-spirited team, the Champions of the Yolo County Athletic League. Captained by Arnold Alspaw, the team's ten consecutive league victories provided an exciting season of outstanding basketball. The decisive victory over the Dixon Rams-the runner-up team-was perhaps the most skillfully played game of the league this season. Climaxing all was the thrilling final contest in which the Chargers pulled past the Comets in the last seconds of play to win by a score of 53-50 and remain the undefeated victors. .nag ,-.---..p- Kneeling, left to right: H.
