'!C?' it Qarcward In years to come many' of us will glance Through this LA PERITA and try to recapture the memories of our high school life. lt is the goal of every annual to capture glimpses of the school year in pictures. The laughter in the halls, the pretty girls, the handsome boys, the teachers, the homework . . . all these will be iust memories in later years. No particular theme is employed throughout the book except that of our mascot, to remind you of your Charger's Life in Courtland High. Our first semester ended sorrowfully with the passing of our Principal, Mr. M. T. Hoyt. Vice Principal, Mr. M. K. Good- ridge, took temporary charge. Mr. Jack Kromrey and Miss Rose Simonelli were the new members of our faculty this year. Despite problems the '53 -'54 year ended happily. This La Perita has two firsts that it can boast. The picture cover is one, and the number of pages is the other. My sincerest thanks go to Miss Rose Simonelli, advisor, George Gould, Stan Sakata, who were my able assistants, and the rest of the staff. Schilling, Principal Principal 's ,Message We,so often hear about the change in modern youth for the worse, due, we are told, to the lack of family unity, lack of discipline, and lack of fundamental training as well as the oversupply of movies, television, personal freedom and use of the automobile, that it is with almost a sense of relief we reread these words of that great educator, Socrates, written in the 5th Century B. C. The children now love luxury, they have bad man- ners, contempt for authority, they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They con- tradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers. Yes, these are the good old days we so often hear about. They seem rather familiar to me. MR. MELVILLE T. HOYT MRS. KATHRYN BENGE Secretary Haculfy MISS ROSE SIMONELLI Foreign Language and English Departments MRS. The Semester Stu- dent Body elections were introduced into our school constitution last year and put into effect this year. Both elections were excellently run this year. The council attended the Woodland's Student Leaders conference in March. Courtland headed the panel on School Publications. Records were made to be broken, and the Magazine Sale's record set last year was broken when we obtained S2,586.54! Claire Fong received a radio for being high salesman. Other hi-lights of our year were the Senior Play, our Snow Trip, and our Senior Ball. All these and other memorable events made this a highly successful year for us Seniors. Our thanks to our advisors: Mr. Stanley McVicker and Miss Rose Simonelli. Unfortunately, two things saddened our year. One was the passing of our principal, Mr. Hoyt, and the other was the absence of Elaine Chee, who spent the majority ofthe school year in the hospital. Our mighty class of fifty has finally reached an end to the trail of its happy high school days. Each of us will go his separate way, but we shall not forget our days in Courtland when we say farewell. Popcorn was sold at basketball games and the machine has proved very profitable. Composed of ten capable members, the La Perita Editorial Staff has worked hard and long to get the book to,press. Despite problems, deadlines, and sweat, it was done, and deep sighs were released. Our thanks go to the faculty, which co-operated very much, and to Miss Rose Simonelli, whom we initiated into the La Perita advisor job this year. Senior 6 ' ' Any Senior girl who has made twenty-four, points during her four years in high school has met the qualifications of the Senior The required points are gained by taking part in every sport and participating in other activities, such as coke sales and drill team. This organization, which began this year with four members, soon increased to twelve in the second semester. The annual sports dance, which is the main feature of the Senior C, was given in January. The girls went on an excursion to Sacramento and were also invited to attend the Harlem Globetrotter's game. Also, adding to their laurels were the performances in the Annual Christmas program, the Walnut Grove Grammar School, the Sen- ior Graduation, and Public Schools Night. After many a hard fought game, we finished with a total of two wins, one tie and six losses. Spirit and guts just couldn't take the place of experience and weight.
